Erin Hanson
By Angela Romeo
Painting the Landscape with Color
Sometimes you meet people who
seem to exude happiness. Spend any
time with artist Erin Hanson and you
cannot help but smile.
Erin Hanson was raised in La Cañada, received a degree in bioengineering
from the University of California at Berkeley. After graduating, she started a
wholesale sales business on eBay. With her business acumen, her artistic talent
and a desire to paint, Erin began creating a painting a week. As her portfolio
grew, Erin entered the art market.
“I create landscapes of abstraction and light. I focus on the shapes, the colors
that play off those shapes and the light that creates these magnificent colors. I
always see the drama that surrounds me. My goal is to capture that landscape
drama and to have the viewer ‘see” color in, well, a whole different light,”
remarked Erin. “ I am fortunate to travel and photograph these moments which
I interpret to canvas.”
Erin’s work is done in oils using a wet on wet approach. “I use oils for their
textures. I build the paint to a frosting. Armed with that thick impasto paint I
paint as if creating a mosaic rather than a layering of paint. This allows me to
paint quickly with the richness of the oils.”
“Scale is always a challenge. I use ½ inch or 1-inch brush no matter the size of
the canvas. With a small canvas every brush stroke becomes magnified. The
sense of space and light changes. A large canvas is a challenge to detail. But I
love what I do so challenges are nothing more than paths to my growth as an
artist.”
Talent, brains and keen business sense has seen Erin’s star rise. “I started
painting a canvas a week to create a body of work. I began to exhibit at art
shows. I took the proceeds and re-invested in my art business. I invested in my
mobile gallery – cathedral tents and portable walls to showcase my work with
the emotional and aesthetic impact it requires. I want people to stop and look.
I want them to feel engaged. I enjoy it when a person tells me they are moved
by my paintings, “ said Erin. “Giving the viewer a sense of the scope of the work
helps them see how a particular piece will work for their collection.”
Erin maintains a studio/gallery in Glendale, California. She participates in art
shows around the country. Traveling to the Colorado plateau, as Zion National
Park, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, Paso Robles, Joshua Tree National
Park, and the Anza-Borrego desert keep Erin inspired. All of this is evident in
her painting Indian Wells in Bloom which was chosen to be the commemorative
poster for the 13th Indian Wells Arts Festival. “I am honored to have been
chosen. This piece captures the beauty of Indian Wells.” Erin participating at the
festival from April 3-5th.
