ONLY ONE!
There was ONLY ONE who could be the
perfect substitute for us and that was
JESUS! In the same way, ONLY ONE of
the squares below can be substituted
for the empty square in the picture.
ONLY ONE will work perfectly. Can you
figure out which one it is?
A. B. C. D.
If your school teacher is
absent, someone has
to come and take his
or her place. We call that
person a SUBSTITUTE. A substitute is someone
who takes the place of another. You may not
know this, but JESUS IS YOUR SUBSTITUTE.
No, not your substitute teacher . . . but YOUR
substitute, the one who took YOUR place. But
how did He take your place? Well, because you
were a sinner, you were going to have to die for
your sins and go to hell. But when Jesus died on
the cross, God made Him your substitute . . .
He died in your place. In fact, all the bad things
Jesus went through were a part of being your
SUBSTITUTE. Emphasize the capitalized words
from the following verse (Isaiah 53:5):
HE was wounded for OUR transgressions,
HE was bruised for OUR iniquities:
the chastisement of OUR peace was upon HIM;
and with HIS stripes WE are healed.
All that HE did was for US! HE took OUR place!
HE was OUR substitute!

The secret message below tells another way Jesus was our substitute. Here’s how to decode the
message. Substitute every letter N with the letter T. Substitute every letter L with the letter H.
Substitute every letter Z with the letter Y. Substitute every letter J with the letter B. And substitute
every letter D with the letter M. All of the remaining letters stay the same. The first word has been
decoded for you.
