JUNE/JULY 2010PUBLISHED BY KENNETH HAGIN MINISTRIESPlugging Into God’s Power // The Mathematics of Faith // Did Jesus Heal Everyone?

It’s time for us as Christians to start demonstrating the power of God to those around us.4 THE WORD OF FAITH // Jun/Jul ‘10

KENNETH W. HAGINThis is our timeto preach the Gospelwith the power of God inmanifestation. We are a power generation.availableJuly 1stPreorderYour CopyToday!NewRELEASEFromKenneth W.Hagin! Our daily lives are surrounded withpower. We have power appliances, suchas refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves. Our garages are filledwith power tools that include saws, drills, and routers. We drive vehicleswith power engines, power brakes, power steering, power locks, and powerwindows. It seems as though we can’tsurvive without power.Political leaders in our nation andaround the world are concerned withthe balance of power. Economists closelywatch the power of one currencyagainst another. Militaries around theworld are wary of the weapon capacityand firepower of their enemies. We are a generation that is consumedwith power. We demand it in every areaof our lives except one. In the churchworld, not having any power is readilyaccepted.Today, a church in which the powerof God is manifested is not the norm. When a church does rise up and demonstratethe power of God, it is brandedas wild. What has the Church come to?Where has the power gone?Transmitting God’sPower to the WorldI do not believe that we who arecalled by the Name of our Lord JesusChrist have a right to take a powerlessGospel to a lost and dying generation.Acts 1:8 says, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:and ye shall be witnesses unto me. . . .”This verse shows us that when wereceive the Holy Spirit, we receivepower. It’s time for us as Christians tostart demonstrating the power of God tothose around us.We should not be satisfied with thestatus quo. We need to rise up and declare,“I’m born again by the blood of theLord Jesus Christ. I’ve been baptized inthe Holy Spirit and I speak in tongues. And I have the power of God in my life!”God wants a people who will standin the gap for this generation. He islooking for those who will go into thehighways and byways and not just askthe lost to come in but compel them tocome in. God desires a people who willtake His miracle-working power to thesick and dying. When was the last time you laid yourhands on someone and prayed for theirhealing? This is not something that onlypreachers should do. The Great Commissionwas given to every believer.Mark 16:18 says that when any believerlays hands on someone who is sick, thatperson shall recover! Not might recover, but shall.Let the ChurchArise! This is our hour! We are here forsuch a time as this. This is our timeto preach the Gospel with the powerof God in manifestation. The ApostlePaul understood this. He said in FirstThessalonians 1:5, “For when we broughtyou the Good News, it was not only withwords but also with power . . .” (NLT).We cannot, we must not, and we willnot be satisfied with a powerless Gospel. We must be known as the people whopreach the Gospel with power! We mustfall on our faces before God and seekHim until His power is demonstrated tothe world. It’s time to be known as GenerationP—the power generation—the generationthat has the manifestation of God’spower in our lives. Will you join me and make a commitmentto be part of a band of believerswho boldly invade the world of darkness? Will you take the power of God tothis generation? It’s time for us to quittalking about the power of God. Now isthe time to demonstrate it!Power Up!The world is waiting for Christians to demonstrate God’slife-transforming power. Kenneth W. CRAIG W. HAGINAvery familiar scripture forthose who follow this ministryis Mark 11:23: “Forverily I say unto you, Thatwhosoever shall say unto this mountain, Bethou removed, and be thou cast into the sea;and shall not doubt in his heart, but shallbelieve that those things which he saithshall come to pass; he shall have whatsoeverhe saith.”We see from this verse that whenwe say something and never doubt thatwhat we say will come to pass, we willhave what we say. When I look at thisWhat may be impossible for usis possible with God.scripture, I see the simple mathematicalequation x + y = z, or “saying plus believingequals having.”xIn looking at Mark 11:23 as an equationof faith, the first part of the formulais “saying.”It’s important to watch what we say.One reason our faith doesn’t work whenwe go through difficult times is that wespeak the wrong words. For example,I have heard people say, “I never haveenough money to pay my bills.”Although it may be true that theyare experiencing lack in their finances,if they continually talk about their lack, they are actually tying the hands of Godand preventing Him from moving ontheir behalf. And instead of rising abovetheir circumstances, they remain boundby them.Others have said, “I didn’t finish mycollege education, so I will never beable to get a good job,” or “I’m alwayssick and tired,” or “I’m always lonelyand depressed.”We must realize that we form ourworld with our words. So if we alwaystalk like this, we shouldn’t be surprisedthat we have what we say. That’s why I always make a point ofsaying things such as, “I never worry, because I have the peace of God thatpasses all understanding” (Phil. 4:7),or “The joy of the Lord is my strength”(Neh. 8:10). When I talk like this, I amWe form our worldwith our words.putting myself on a pathway of victory. And no matter what I encounter, I knowthat I’m victorious in Christ.yThe second part of faith’s equation is“believing.” A lot of times people becomedisheartened when they are believingGod for something but don’t receive itright away. Because they didn’t get it assoon as they thought they should have, they begin questioning God. And assoon as they begin to doubt, they havestepped out of the arena of faith.Let’s look at something that happenedin Jesus’ life. It’s an example of atime when He spoke and it didn’t look asif anything had changed. In Mark chapter11, Jesus was on His way to Jerusalemwith His disciples. He saw a fig treein the distance and thought there werefigs on the tree. But when He discoveredthat the tree didn’t have any fruit on it,He cursed it (v. 14).Jesus and His disciples continuedinto Jerusalem, where Jesus cleansedthe temple. Then they left and spent thenight outside the city. The next morningas they were returning to Jerusalem theyrhema.org 9

In God We Trust“. . . Have faith in God.”—Mark 11:22Scripture tells us to put our faith in God. Those of us who live inthe United States simply have to look at a coin to be remindedof this. All U.S. coins bear the words In God We Trust. When welook at any coin, we are reminded that our faith, hope, andtrust are in God. He cannot and will not fail us. So the next timewe’re tempted to become discouraged, let’s look at a coin andremember to have faith in God.Turning Defeat Into VictoryFaith NuggetHave you ever been so challenged that you didn’t know what to do? In this4-CD series, Kenneth E. Hagin presents 10 steps that, when taken in sequence, will bring anyone out of defeat and into certain victory!passed by the fig tree, and Peter noticedthat it had dried up from the roots anddied (v. 20–21).Although nothing appeared to happenthe day before when Jesus cursedthe fig tree, it died immediately. It justtook a little while to see the effects ofJesus’ words. The same is true for us. As soon aswe speak words of faith, even thoughwe may not see or feel anything different, our situation begins to change. Wehave to be patient. When we are, we willsee our words and our faith change ourcircumstances.zThe last part of faith’s equation, “having,”or receiving from God, doesn’t haveto be difficult. By doing this, we’llbe reminded of how big our God is. TheGod we serve created the universe. Hecreated the sun, moon, and stars. OurGod created the earth and everything init. No problem we will ever encounteris bigger than the universe God made. And as we focus on the bigness of God,our circumstances won’t look so big afterall. It’s not about us; it’s about God. Andwhat may be impossible for us is possiblewith God (Luke 18:27). Jesus said,“. . . If thou canst believe, all things are possibleto him that believeth” (Mark 9:23).Our simple faith equation is “sayingplus believing equals having.” If we stickwith what we believe and never changeour confession, or our words, we will receivethe end of our faith. MISSIONSThere’s a revolution taking place among the youth of Uganda. And Matt and Angela Catinella, 2000 and2001 RHEMA Bible Training Center graduates, are right in the middle of it. In a nation ravaged by the AIDSepidemic and increasing moral decline, a nation where youth are left to fend for themselves with little or noparental guidance, they are reaching out and making a difference—one youth at a time. “If we can train 20,” said Matt andAngela, “and 20 train 2,000, over time, we can reach a nation.”For Matt and Angela, their mission began in 2004 when God called them to help a missionary couple in South Africa. Atthe time, though, they didn’t know exactly what God was calling them to do. “I was just ready to preach the Word,” Mattrecalled. But the missionaries they were serving had other ideas. “They asked us to develop a school ministry,” said Matt. “Idid not want to tackle life skills and kids. But the Lord started dealing with me. We were burying so many young peoplein Africa who had died of AIDS. The death rate in South Africa at that time wasone in four. It was ridiculous. Our guard at the ministry would be there, and then he wouldn’t be there. The maids would be cleaning, andthen they’d pass away. They’d put up these huge tents in the villagesand would do funerals where everyone would come.”At this point the Lord began prompting Matt and Angela to teachpurity. “God gave me the phrase walk pure,” said Matt, “so I justbegan going into the schools and teaching students aboutpurity and leadership. We started teaching them out ofsome sermons I had put together.” As Matt and Angela’sministry expanded, the Lord began to deal withthem about writing a book. The result was Walk Pure,10 lessons on abstinence and living a life of purity.Geared specifically toward African youth and writtenin a language they can understand, the book is givento every student whom Matt and Angela teach. In 2007, God called the Catinellas—and their ministryto youth—to Kampala, Uganda. “The youth ofUganda are just like American youth,” they said.“They face temptations and are surrounded bynegative influences like alcohol, drugs,Matt (‘00) and Angela (‘01)CatinellaKampala, Ugandarhema.org 15

MISSIONSLocation:Kampala, Uganda, EastAfrica.Facts:One in five has HIV/AIDS.One in 10 has no parents.Three-fourths of thepopulation is below theage of 30.The Mission:Revolutionize a nation . . .one youthat a time.and sex. Without guidance, these kids are left tofigure out life on their own.” That’s where Mattand Angela’s Living Water Ministry comes in. Usingtheir book Walk Pure and two other booksthey’ve written, the Catinellas are reaching intohigh schools across Uganda. But they’re not doingit alone.“Our heart is to raise up indigenous leadersto reach their own people,” said Matt. Workingwith local churches and universities, Matt andAngela are training young people between ages20 and 30. For 10 weeks, students attend Bibleschool and learn faith foundations. “We teachthem about healing, who they are in Christ, righteousness, and the believer’s authority, and weget them filled with the Holy Spirit,” Matt said.Students are then trained for another 10 weeks toteach the Walk Pure curriculum in high schools. They learn public speaking, counseling, administration, and classroom management for groupsof 300 students. After graduating, these trainedyoung people are planted in high schools wherethey become mentors to the students—many ofwhom have very hard lives.“A lot of students have been molested or theyhave AIDS,” Matt noted. “They barely have thefees to be in school. There are so many things thatthey carry around with them and harbor in theirhearts as they go to school.” The Catinellas wantmentors to spend at least 10 weeks with studentsso relationships can be built and the mentors canspeak into their lives. The results speak for themselves. One younggirl, Daphne, discovered that her mother hadAIDS. “She was devastated,” Angela recalled. “Shethought, ‘What am I going to do? I want to finishschool. Is my mom going to die?’” But as Daphneshared this news with her Walk Pure mentor,Christine, her life changed. “Christine helpedcounsel her through that and prayed with her,”said Angela. “Daphne got excited about Christineteaching her purity and walking it out in frontof her. She said, ‘I don’t want to havethe same result my mom had.’ Nowshe’s encouraging other people towalk pure, and she even starteda club in her school after wefinished teaching.”Last year alone Matt andAngela discipled and trainedover 50 Spirit-filled leaders just like Christine.“A lot of people are in a hurry to get to a place, but they don’t have anything to give,” they said.“Our leaders are saturated in the Word of Godafter they go though Bible school, and they’re justready to serve.”After training and serving in the schools withMatt and Angela, many leaders return to theirhome churches to serve their pastors. They startyouth groups where there are none. One youngleader, Nicholas, took the Walk Pure curriculumback to his village and began training others.Since there was no public school in the area,he built one out of cow dung and mud and put120 kids in it. Matt and Angela now visit thereto hold vacation Bible schools. Another of theirformer leaders, Charles, uses the leadership skillshe learned through Matt and Angela to care forwar refugees. He currently oversees more than3,000 refugees from Sudan and the DemocraticRepublic of the Congo.Matt and Angela both know that none of thiswould have been possible without their RHEMAtraining. “RHEMA was our foundation,” theysaid. “All the teaching that you get from RHEMAis what we’re teaching now—and not just theWord, but the practical as well.”With their own foundation firm, Matt andAngela are eager to continue revolutionizingyouth—not only in Uganda but in all of Africa.“The enemy has come to kill, steal, and destroy,”said Matt. “But Jesus came to give us life, and lifeto the full. Satan is trying to steal the destiny andpurpose of these youth from them. We have tokeep them alive to get them to their purpose.”Through their Bible school, leadership program,Walk Pure curriculum, and annual youthrallies, Matt and Angela are making a difference. They’re changing the thinking and behavior of aforgotten generation—a generation that has beenwithout hope, without mentors, and without Jesus. . . until now.To check out a video from Matt and Angela and learnmore about the work they’re doing in Uganda, visitwww.rhema.org/wof.For more information about their ministry, visit www.livingwatermin.org.

Restoring One Lifeat a TimeMichelle was born to a prostitute. She never knew herfather and grew up rejected, angry, and confused. Bythe time she was 15, she had tried drugs, alcohol, and suicide and had given up a child for adoption.Shawn (‘85) andBy age 18, she was addicted to cocaine, crack, and crank and wasPaul CollierClayton, Alabamaheartbroken and empty.“I lived a life of devastation and was destroying everyone in my path,” Michelle said. “Thefinal straw was a horrific car accident. I was running from the police in a high-speed chase andthe car crashed going over 110 miles per hour. The driver was killed but my life was spared.”Today Michelle is a 32-year-old wife, mother, and minister. She has been married for 13years, has four children, and has been in full-time ministry for nine years. What changed herlife so dramatically? She went to Harvest Time Ministries in Clayton, Alabama, where ShawnSimmons-Collier took her under her wing.Rev. Shawn, a 1985 RHEMA Bible Training Center graduate, understood where Michellewas coming from. She herself was addicted to drugs and alcohol until she accepted Jesus as herSavior at the age of 26. “Rev. Shawn mentored me and showed me that no matter where I camefrom or how I entered this world, I was created for a purpose,” said Michelle, one of the firstgraduates from Harvest Time. “I wouldn’t be here today—or who I am today—had it not beenfor her faithfulness and her love for God and hurting girls.”Rev. Shawn opened Harvest Time, a Christian boarding school, in January 1996 and sincethen has helped more than 400 hurting girls. With students ranging in age from 11 to 22, theprogram lasts for 18 months, but some have stayed as long as six years.“We are a ministry dedicated to helping hurting young women who face life-controlling issues,”Rev. Shawn said. “Our purpose is to bring hope and healing to families where it seemsthat all hope has been lost. Once a girl comes into our ministry, she quickly learns that we aremore like a family than a facility. We provide our studentswith an opportunity to receive restoration and healingfrom a lifetime of hurts.”Emily grew up hating herself. When she was sevenyears old, her younger sister died, and the anger Emilyfelt fueled that hatred even more. With other family issuesfeeding that anger, Emily developed an eating disorder andwas cutting herself by the age of 16. “I became entrenchedin a vicious lifestyle of cutting and purging,” she said. “Mycuts were so deep I was admitted into the hospital five times for medical care. Between the agesof 16 and 20, I was admitted into 25 psychiatric hospitals. When I was 18, I tried to commitsuicide.”As Emily went through the Harvest Time program, her outlook on life changed completely.“I was so tired of the pain,” she said. “I learned that God was loving and that Jesus lovesme! A joy and peace filled my heart that I had never known. I learned who I wasin Christ and that I had a purpose and a destiny. I am so excited about myfuture. It’s so good to be free!”Rev. Shawn is thankful for the training she received at RHEMA.“I often wonder what would have happened if I had never gone toRHEMA, because I would have had no clue what to do,” she said. “Goingthere caused me to have the courage to rise up and do what Godcalled me to do.”Prayer Requests for Harvest Time Ministries• That the ministry’s needs are met• That the girls are released from the pain and shame of the past• That their families experience healing, provision, and restorationFor more information about Harvest Time Ministries, visitwww.HarvestTimeMinistriesInc.org.Once a girl comesinto our ministry, shequickly learns that weare more like a familythan a facility.MISSIONS‘They’re not going tolet this fire die!’Young people in this generation arehungry. Some are seeking to fill a voidin their lives by chasing after thingsof this world, such as drugs, sex, alcohol, and money. But there isa voice in this generationthat is crying out for God.Not religion. Not tradition. Not churchas it has been. They are crying out formore of Him.During Winter Bible Seminar 2010,the youth of this generation were wellrepresented and showed their hungerfor more of God. During one service, more than 100 young people simultaneouslystarted running across thefront of the RHEMA Bible Church Auditorium, praising God as they went.“We’ve got a lot of young peoplearound here who are not interested inchurch as usual,” Kenneth W. They’re runningbecause they’ve been set free. They’re running to stir themselves upbecause they know they have an enemyto face out there.“Some places are trying to quietthem down,” Rev. When studying theministry of the LordJesus Christ, a lotof folks misunderstandsome of the principles of faith thatwould help them receive from God. Theyerroneously believe that Jesus healedeverybody He came in contact with toprove His Deity. However, Scripturedoes not teach that Jesus always healedeverybody everywhere He went.On certain occasions, the Bibledoes record that when the multitudesfollowed Jesus, He healed them all(Matt. 12:15; Luke 6:19). But Scripturealso lists times when only a few peoplewere healed. For instance, in Jesus’hometown of Nazareth, the Word says,“He could there do no mighty work, savethat he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them” (Mark 6:5).Only One HealedThe Book of Mark tells the story ofhow one woman in the midst of a multitudegot healed. This woman sufferedwith an issue of blood for many years. When she heard of Jesus, she made herway through the people and touchedthe hem of His garment. And when shetouched Jesus, she was made whole(Mark 5:25–29).Jesus immediately stopped andasked His disciples, “. . . Who touched myclothes?” (v. 30).His disciples replied, “. . . Thou seestthe multitude thronging thee, and sayestthou, Who touched me?” (v. 31).Jesus was surrounded by a largecrowd of people, and many were tryingto touch Him. I’m sure some peopletouched Jesus out of curiosity as He(Editor’s Note: This article was adapted from a message Kenneth E. Hagin preachedon March 28, 1972, during a Faith Seminar in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.)18 THE WORD OF FAITH // Jun/Jul ‘10

Faith made the connection and causedthe power of God to manifest.walked by them. But nothing happenedwhen they touched Him.There’s no doubt that others touchedJesus accidently. As people were pushingand shoving to get near Jesus, it’slikely that some bumped into Him. Yetthe power of God wasn’t activated by anaccidental touch.Although a multitude surroundedJesus and many people touched Him,the healing power of God was transmittedto just one person. What was differentwhen this woman touched Jesus? The answer is found in verse 34. Jesussaid to the woman, “. . . Daughter, thyfaith hath made thee whole. . . .”Faith made the connection andcaused the power of God to manifest. The Paralytic ManIn Luke chapter 5, we again see onlyone person in the midst of a multitudebeing healed. Jesus was in a housewhere scribes, Pharisees, and doctorsof the law had gathered. It says in verse17 that “. . . the power of the Lord waspresent to heal them.” Yet not one ofthese religious leaders was healed. Thisproves that God’s power alone won’t healsomeone. As Jesus was teaching, four men carryinga paralyzed man tried to get intothe house. They couldn’t get near Jesusbecause of the multitude, so they carriedthe man up to the rooftop and brokethrough the roof to lower him into Jesus’presence. And when Jesus saw theirfaith, He acted.CorrespondingActionsSome may wonder how we can seefaith. Well, we can’t really see faith, butwe can see the results of it. In his letterto the Church, James said, “. . . faithwithout works is dead” (James 2:20). Thismay be a little blind to some. Verse 18in that chapter in the Weymouth translationsays, “. . . ‘You have faith, I haveactions: prove to me your faith apart fromCORRESPONDING ACTIONS and I willprove mine to you by my actions.’ ”Jesus saw the actions of the fourmen. He saw that they had carried theirparalyzed friend to the house He wasin. He saw them break a hole in theroof and lower their friend down. Theparalyzed man then demonstrated faithwhen Jesus said to him, “. . . Arise, andtake up thy couch . . .” (Luke 5:24). Theman immediately got up from his cot, healed by the power of God (v. 25).Some Christians have the mistakenidea that if they are around the power ofGod, they will be healed automatically. But God’s power doesn’t work by itself.Faith has to be mixed with it. And untilfaith is exercised, the power of God isnot activated. Both the woman with the issue ofblood and the paralyzed man made theconnection. Their faith and their correspondingactions caused God’s power tomanifest in their lives. The same principleapplies to us today. Our faith andour corresponding actions are the catalystthat activates the power of God onour behalf. The Power of God:The Cure for All Sicknessand Disease! In Volume 2 of his Miracles of Healing Series,Kenneth E. Confession isfaith’s way of expressing itself. Faith, then, grows withour confession. As believers, we reveal our position—spiritually and naturally— through our confession, andwe set the boundaries of our lives. We won’t receivebeyond what we say.If we say we can’t, then we can’t. We get nothing. Butif we say we can, then we can. Most Christians are weak even though they areearnest because they have never been bold enough todeclare who they are in Christ. How do we do this?First, we must realize how God looks at us, andconfess it.Second, we must boldly confess what the Worddeclares we are in Christ. As we do this, our faith will abound. What Are You Focusing On?Would you say you were an optimist or a pessimist? When trouble strikes, do you immediately focuson scripture that says, “All things work together for good to those who love the Lord” (Rom. 8:28)?Or do you wring your hands and cry out, “Why is this happening to me?”Are you always focusing on the difficulties that confront you, or are you constantly looking for thebright side of every situation? An optimist sees the glass as half full, while a pessimist views the sameglass as half empty. The World’s Greatest BallplayerI once heard a story about a little boy who was strutting across his backyard wearing a baseballcap and carrying a bat and ball. He boldly announced, “I’m the greatest hitter in the world!” Then hetossed the ball into the air and swung at it with all of his might. He missed. “Strike one!” he yelled out.But that didn’t discourage him.Undaunted, he picked up the ball and repeated, “I’m the greatest hitter in the world.” He threw theball into the air. But when he swung at it the second time, it was strike two! That still didn’t discourage the young fellow. This time, he examined the bat and ball carefully. Thenhe rubbed his hands together, straightened his cap, and declared oncemore, “I’m the greatest hitter in the world!” He tossed the ball into theair and swung at it again. But he missed the ball for the third time. Strikethree! The boy paused for a moment to ponder the situation and then exclaimed,“Wow! I’m the greatest pitcher in the world!”That little boy’s optimistic attitude prompted him to give an encouragingmeaning to what had happened. He was saying, “OK, if I’m not thegreatest hitter in the world, then I must be the greatest pitcher.”Finding GoodYour attitude determines how circumstances impact your life. If you try,you can always find a way to highlight the good in a bad situation. There’san old saying—“You’ll find whatever you’re looking for.” If you’re alwayslooking for the gloomy side of life, you’re going to find it.Of course, as we process the circumstances that occur in our lives, it’seasy to focus on the wrong things. The world has programmed us to benegative. Just look at the news reports. News is not news unless it’s bad. We’ve been trained to focus on the dark side of every situation. In Philippians 4:8, the Apostle Paul described some of the specificthings we should all focus on. Here is that verse from the New LivingTranslation: “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellentand worthy of praise.”What do we concentrate on so much of the time? We focus on theworst and not the best, don’t we? But if we will focus on the good, it willbrighten our day and help us have a more positive outlook on life. Here is a word of encouragement. The circumstances of life maybe making you dizzy. The problems may be swirling all aroundyou. But if you will keep your faith focused on the Rock—theLord Jesus Christ—it doesn’t matter what kind of circumstancesyou’re facing. God will be right there to deliver you—and not outof just one or two circumstances, but out of them all! What Kind of LegacyAre We Leaving?PreorderYour CopyToday! If you try, youfindcana alwaysto highlightthe good in a badsituation. How will others remember us? LYNETTE HAGIN“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needsin a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be Likea well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”- Isaiah 58:11 (NIV)As we look at the world we live in, it would be very easy to letourselves be dominated by fear. The media bombard us with negative happenings. Reports ofeconomic conditions, natural disasters, crime, health concerns, terrorist attacks, and so forthwould cause us to look for a place to hibernate and keep to ourselves.Fear starts early in life. Often young children become fearful of the dark. When our daughter,Denise, was a little girl, a neighbor girl would tell her that there were monsters and we should beafraid of them. Of course, we assured Denise that no monsters could possibly come near us becausewe were protected by the 91st Psalm. One day the little girl was once again trying to make Denise afraid of monsters. Suddenly I heard our daughter call the girl by hername and say, “The 91st Psalm says, ‘No monsters can come nigh you.’” I laughed, but I thought that was a pretty good interpretationof the 91st Psalm. Denise was making that scripture personal for her situation. That was the end of the monster scare for Denise.Fear of monsters may sound trivial to us as adults. However, there are fears that will try to capture us, just as the monster fear triedto torment our daughter. It is important that we face our fears and allow the Lord to turn those fears into faith in His promises.Fear can paralyze us. I was fearful of flying for many years. When I was in an aircraft and turbulence occurred, my stomach wouldturn somersaults from fear. I would grip my husband’s hand so tightly that my nails would almost cause it to bleed. I would takeauthority over that fear in the Name of Jesus, because I knew where the fear was coming from. Yet I still would have difficulty calmingmy mind. Finally one day I said to the Lord, “God, I’ve got to have a scripture to stand on when I fly. I’ve got to have a promise from YourWord that will be specific for the situation.” Isn’t it wonderful that the Lord is so concerned about our peace of mind that He’ll give usexactly what we ask for?He led me to Psalm 121: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which madeheaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neitherslumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”The Message translation puts it this way: “I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes fromGod, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. He won’t let you stumble, your Guardian God won’t fall asleep. Not on your life! Israel’sGuardian will never doze or sleep. God’s your Guardian, right at your side to protect you—Shielding you from sunstroke, sheltering you frommoonstroke. God guards you from every evil, he guards your very life. He guards you when you leave and when you return, he guards you now,he guards you always.”I was so comforted by this psalm. I thought it covered just about everything I needed. He guards me when I’m flying by day, andHe guards me when I’m flying at night. He guards me when I’m taking off in the plane and when I’m landing. And, greatest of all,He is always guarding me. From that day forward I have always claimed these scriptures every timeI fly. We always pray before we take off, and I always end the prayer with, “Thank You, Lord. Youdo bless our going out and our coming in, and we shall be safe from the time we take off until weland at our destination.”Fear of flying may never have bothered you. However, what fears are trying to control you?You may have a fear of disease, death, financial problems, or broken relationships. You couldbe afraid of failing in your marriage, being a bad parent, being rejected, losing your job, or notbeing promoted. Whatever fears are trying to hold you in bondage, face them with faith in Godand His Word.We can draw comfort from the words God spoke to Joshua when Moses died (Joshua 1:9 NIV):“ ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, forthe Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’ ”22 THE WORD OF FAITH // Jun/Jul ‘10
