New parking heaters for today and the future
Webasto Thermo Top Evo as original equipment or for retrofitting
Webasto has been developing innovative solutions for the automobile industry for more
than 75 years. This tradition-rich company from Stockdorf manufactured its first parking
heater in 1930. And today there are many kinds of motor vehicle heating solutions
available based on a wide range of different technologies. Webasto is the market
leader in this field, where the technologies are highly developed and mature. The end
users are the main beneficiaries of these skills and knowledge: they can rely on
outstanding quality, comprehensive customer support and seamless integration of
parking heaters into their vehicles.
How a parking heater works
At the heart of a parking heater is the burner. The
main components of the burner are: the combustion
chamber, vaporizer and glow plug. This is how the
heater works: a dosing pump feeds fuel to the
vaporizer inside the combustion chamber. The
heater’s blower provides the air to create a
combustible fuel-air mixture. A glow plug ignites the
mixture and a stable flame forms. A circulatory
pump delivers a heat-carrying coolant from the
vehicle’s cooling system and circulates it around the
combustion chamber. The coolant medium is
warmed by the heat in the combustion chamber and
conducted into the vehicle’s coolant circulatory
system. The vehicle’s heat exchanger transfers the heat from the coolant into the air,
which is then blown into the passenger compartment by the vehicle’s heater fan. This
warm air deices the front windshield and warms the vehicle’s interior. The engine is
also prewarmed by the parking heater.
The evolution of Thermo Top to Thermo Top Evo
The latest development from Webasto unites the strengths of two currently successful
product series: Thermo Top V and Thermo Top C. Thermo Top V is a compact unit,
which can be used in many different situations, while Thermo Top C has a very robust
vaporizer burner. Webasto has combined the compactness of the one and the reliable,
maintenance-free burner technology of the other to create a new generation of parking
heaters: Thermo Top Evo. This powerful parking heater is available in three versions
for retrofitting into virtually any type of automobile.
With a rating of four kilowatts (kW), the Thermo Top Evo 4 has the heat output of a
Swedish stove. It is particularly suitable for compact vehicles. The five kW model,
Thermo Top Evo 5, is meant for standard and full-sized automobiles, while the 5+
model is intended for vehicles with particularly large interiors or engines. Thermo Top
Evo models are available for operation with any commonly available fuel.
Depending on the vehicle and its heater, Webasto parking heaters require only about
20 minutes to heat up the car, even in temperatures of minus five to minus ten degrees
Celsius.
What does the plus stand for on the Thermo Top Evo 5+?
The flagship of the Thermo Top Evo series is the Thermo Top Evo 5+. It is the most
powerful of the available models, as it was specially designed for vehicles with large
interiors or engines. The parking heater incorporates several new technologies that
allow this type of vehicle to be heated up as quickly as possible and have the front
windshield deiced in record time. This is achieved with a new type of water circuit
regulator. Its special features are: the circulatory pump delivers the coolant at a slower
rate than the other models in the Thermo Top Evo series. The slower speed of flow
gives the heat exchanger more time to transfer the heat energy from the combustion
chamber into the coolant. This means that the coolant arrives at the vehicle’s heat
exchanger at a higher temperature. As a result: the air can be warmed more intensely
before passing into the vehicle interior. A delayed switch-on of the vehicle’s heater
reinforces this effect. This in turn conserves the battery, as the vehicle’s blower draws
a lot of power. After the coolant has flowed through the vehicle’s heating system, it is
further conducted to the engine, which is prewarmed with the residual heat.
This new method of regulating the water circulation system greatly increases the
efficiency of the heating process and thaws the front windshield more quickly. This is
good news for drivers on short car trips that do not comply with the general rule of
thumb that journey times should be at least as long as the engine’s heating-up time.
Availability of the Thermo Top Evo
The Thermo Top Evo is immediately available as an aftermarket system with a
standard installation kit for all vehicles. Vehicle-specific installation solutions will be
offered for every model entering the market from 2010. All installation solutions ensure
that the parking heater can be seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s system
interfaces. This work should be performed by suitably qualified workshop personnel
only. Therefore end customers must have their parking heaters retrofitted by a certified
Webasto installation partner.
Smart operating controls
Webasto offers the user several types of control. For people who are at ease
programming their parking heaters, there is the comfort timer. This digital controller has
three programmable starting times, which can be activated up to 24 hours in advance.
Then there is the Telestart T91 remote control unit for even more comfort and
convenience. The transmitter is in the form of a key ring and has a range of up to
1,000 meters. Yet more heater remote control options are offered by the Telestart T100
HTM. The remote control has an integrated heating time management (HTM) system,
which uses a temperature sensor fitted to the vehicle to detect the current passenger
compartment temperature and calculates the optimum start time for the parking heater,
taking into account the intended time of departure. The handset has a maximum range
of approximately 1,000 meters.
