Placencia BTIA Development Survey 

Findings Show Responding Members Not In Favor of 

Cruise Tourism 

A recent survey - the first part of the Placencia chapter of 

BTIA proactive effort to work with its members, the local 

councils, residents, and visitors to the area – was completed 

by 58% of the paid up members. The purpose of the survey 

was to be specific and clear about the development direction 

for the destination. Ideas addressed included what was 

wanted for future growth of the greater Placencia area which 

is currently developing rapidly. Many previous comments 

from residents regarding Tourism Development in the area 

have been very specific about what they don’t want in the 

Placencia Area as opposed to what they would prefer and the 

survey hopes to address that. 

The respondents who took part in the survey consisted of a 

wide representation of the entire peninsula: from large 

resort developments to small “Mom and Pop” businesses; 

from tourism industry workers and owners; from general 

membership including hotels, restaurants & bars; from tour 

operators to tour guides and gift shops; from the Peninsulaborn, 

the long-term residents and the newcomers; all 

categories took part in the survey. 

The survey tackled important areas such as: The Direction 

Our Destination Should Follow, Infrastructure and Zoning, 

Types of Tourism Visitors, Target Age Groups, Types of 

Development, Preparedness for Major Visitor Increase, 

Improvements Needed, Day and Nighttime Entertainment, 

Fish Farming, Recycling, Marketing and more. 

While it was apparent that the membership would like to see 

an increase in the area’s overnight guests - international, 

domestic and regional guests, as well as recreational boating 

guests (sail, motor or yacht), there was a very strong answer 

when asked about cruise ship visitors. The overwhelming 

majority of those surveyed voted “Strongly Disagree” when 

asked if they were in favor of Cruise Ship visitors. 

When asked “Are you in favour of”: the feedback included 

the following: 

The main area of concern regarding the proposal for cruise 

ships coming to the Placencia Peninsula, and also including 

the Southern Cayes, is that the attractions that have been 

developed over the years by our broad based local industry 

are known for their low density. These sites will experience a 

dramatic increase in density without the corresponding 

benefit to the very industry that developed them if cruise 

tourism is allowed in this area. These attractions - the cayes 

and surrounding waters, the beaches, the ruins, and the 

inland adventures are exactly what makes Placencia a 

perfect “do it all” destination. 

In fact, there are so many questions our membership want 

answered in detail that they are requesting meetings, 

forums, and feedback, and an Absolute No on the signing of 

any contracts by BTB on behalf of the GOB, or allowing any 

such contract with any cruise operators unless a majority 

vote of our area finds strongly in favour of this type of 

development. 

This is a major subject, possibly the largest type of direct 

impact that Placencia and its residents are yet to see. In a 

time when the economy is slumping the desire for instant 

cash and jobs, together with the initial generalization of all 

the pros, looks rosy. However BTIA strongly cautions for a 

full evaluation of the cons as well, and time to make sensible 

decisions. 

The legacy of the Village, and the gift of our beautiful 

resources to future generations, depends on solid decisions 

being made now for our development. All of Placencia are in 

favour of preserving their heritage. We hope our PM, HON 

Dean Barrow, his Minister of Tourism, BTB and its CEO 

and new Director, examine carefully our point of view, and 

do not rush into agreements without imparting full facts of 

the likely impacts and obtaining majority consent of the 

area.

Monthly Message from Placencia Village Council Chairman 

Good Day Everyone, 

I hope you are having a wonderful day in 

beautiful Placencia. I am very pleased to 

say that the Placencia Village Council has 

a wonderful, dedicated team and I believe 

that we can accomplish many positive 

changes and hopefully get the ball rolling 

in the right direction for future 

generations. 

While it is known that small “niche” cruise ships have been 

visiting the area for years it is an absolute certainty that 

the cruise companies looking in this direction do not have 

boats that are what anyone in this area would consider 

small, manageable or what is visiting already. 

I would like to take this opportunity to touch on a specific subject 

matter that has been plaguing our Peninsula for quite some time 

now and that plague is crime. 

For too many years there have been a growing gap between 

residents of Placencia and the Police Department and this gap has 

made it easier for criminals to prey on law abiding citizens, their 

homes and businesses.

Rotary Club of Placencia 

The new Rotary Year (2010-2011), under President Lydia 

Villanueva, started with a new summer reading program, 

our now monthly Bingo game (games are generally planned 

for the third Saturday of every month), planning for an 

event in August, and progress on two school projects. 

SUMMER READING PROGRAM 

Thanks to the efforts of Rotarian Linda Cazin Burrow, a summer 

reading program was held at St. Alphonsus School in Seine Bight 

in early July. Principal Lopez selected 10 Standard II students 

needing help with reading to participate and a week long session 

was held

mother trying to learn English). The children participating, as well 

as many that observed through the doors and windows, appeared 

to enjoy the experience and benefit from the more personal 

attention afforded by the tutoring. Our thanks go out to all 

that participated and it is hoped that the program will be 

repeated next year.

unfortunately, we don’t

The money raised from this game will be used for a dance for the 

seniors to be held at some point in the future. Once again, our 

thanks go out to caller Kathy Anglin and Alan and Janet of the 

Paradise Resort for providing the venue. 

ST. ALPHONSUS PRE-SCHOOL 

Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Saskatoon Nutana, 

construction has started on improvements to the St. Alphonsus Pre 

-School in Seine Bight with the ordering of the materials required 

to complete the work. It is expected that actual construction will 

start soon to ensure that the work is completed before the 

beginning of the next school year. 

ST. JOHN’S PRIMARY SCHOOL 

Using funds raised at our auction earlier this year and a generous 

donation from the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, work has been 

ongoing on the new bathroom facilities for St. John’s Primary 

School in Placencia. The work is almost completed and will provide 

an additional 4 bathrooms for the students to go along with the 

recently renovated existing bathrooms. 

SCHOLARSHIPS 

Work continues on the setting up, administering and awarding of 

scholarships funded by the Rotary Club of Placencia and the 

Edmonton West Rotary Club. We will provide the names of the 

students being awarded scholarships for next year soon and 

encourage anyone that would like to help to donate to our 

scholarship fund so that we may help to provide valuable 

education opportunities to worthy students. 

UPCOMING EVENTS 

The Rotary Club of Placencia will be holding its’ annual Open 

House in late August at the basketball court. The purpose of this 

event is to make the community aware of what we do and to try to 

encourage more members of the community to join us. Please 

check the local access cable TV channel, listen to LOVEFM, and 

watch for signs around the Village for more information on all 

Rotary sponsored events.

CARIBBEAN LOBSTER 

From The Inn at Robert’s Grove, Placencia, Belize 

Ingredients 

4 Medium Sized Lobster 

4 Teaspoons Curry Powder 

1 Red Pepper Thinly Sliced 

1 Orange Pepper Thinly Sliced 

1 Green Pepper Thinly Sliced 

2 Small Habanero Peppers Thinly Sliced 

1 Leek Thinly Sliced 

1 Teaspoon Italian Seasoning 

3 Cups Coconut Milk 

1 Cup Fresh Chopped Tomato 

6 Tablespoons Olive Oil 

Directions 

♦ Remove lobster meat from shells. Reserve 

shells. 

♦ In large sauce pan heat 4 tablespoons 

olive oil, add curry and let cook, stirring 

for one minute 

♦ Add leeks, peppers, Italian seasoning 

and stir for three minutes 

♦ Add coconut milk, fresh tomato and 

simmer for 3 minutes 

♦ In separate pan sauté Lobster in remaining 

olive oil for one minute, then 

add to curry mixture, simmer five minutes 

♦

Boil shells to bring out red color 

Serve curried lobster mixture in shells 

or over white rice

Crime does not only take a toll on citizens 

and their businesses with only their 

personal belongings; it also takes a toll on 

our community’s image and reputation as 

a safe destination. Image and reputation 

is extremely important for not only an 

individual or a business, it is also 

important for a community and in our case 

a Tourism Oriented Community. The 

damage to our image can and will cause 

adverse effects and cause a chain reaction 

in the sense that less tourists to our area means less rooms filled 

at hotels, less rooms filled means less tourists doing tours, eating 

at restaurants, going out at night to enjoy the night life et al; it 

effects us all on many different levels. 

This is the reason why I am taking the crime situation on our 

Peninsula very seriously and putting it on the top of my agenda. 

The first logical step is to close the gap between the Police 

Department and the Residents of Placencia; without closing this 

gap, I believe any other effort would be futile. 

One of the first steps made is to ask for assistance from the 

community, especially the business community. The reason for 

this is that the Police Department in our area have only so much 

resources from Central Government and as a community, I believe 

we have to make that extra effort to help the Police Department in 

fulfilling their duties and keeping our community safe, but also 

holding the Police Department responsible and accountable when 

they are slacking in their duties – this has got to be a two way 

street. 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the businesses/ 

individuals that have assisted the Police Department via the 

Placencia Village Council. This is only a first step; but a big step 

and I want to stress that this will have to be an ongoing, perpetual 

effort. Without further ado a Big Thank You to:

will be having our Annual Miss Placencia, Belize Pageant. We are 

asking for your support by sponsoring one of our 6 talented, lovely 

young ladies. We are asking for a minimum $300.00BZ for each 

contestant, for them to purchase clothing and accessories. 

Becoming a sponsor you will be mentioned as one of our main 

sponsors for the event, and the young lady you’ve sponsored will 

represent your business during the event. 

A copy of our September Celebrations Calendar of Events is 

attached for your review. We also need donations & support for 

the other events as well. If you are unable to be a sponsor for one 

of the young ladies for the Pageant, we would truly appreciate your

The World Of the Maya In Belize 

Belize shares a rich Maya heritage with its neighboring 

countries of Guatemala, Mexico, and Honduras, and is 

considered to have been the heart of Maya civilization 

during the classic period. 

Although Belize's Maya occupation began as early as 1500 

BC, it was during the Classic period of 250 AD to 900 AD 

that the population is thought to have exceeded one million 

people. Archaeological remains of the ancient Maya include 

pottery, skeletons, stelae, and tall palaces, temples, and 

ceremonial centers. 

It is estimated that there are thousands of Maya Ruins in 

Belize. Only a few of these have been found and even fewer 

have been excavated by scientists. All of the following sites 

are available for public viewing. 

Belize was once the center of one of the greatest civilizations 

of antiquity. 

Evidence of the ancient Maya lie strewn about the country. 

Climb ancient temples for spectacular views of the 

surrounding jungle; view larger-than-life stelae and carvings 

of gods and rulers; marvel at the beauty and artistry of jade 

artifacts in museums and visitor centers; or indulge your 

dream of being an archaeologist through study programs or 

assisting with professional field research.

BTIA HELD BI ANNUAL 

GENERAL MEETING 

2010 

Belize City, Thursday, August 5, 2010... The 

Belize Tourism Industry Association held its biannual 

event at the Radisson Fort George Hotel & 

Marina. The Mistress of Ceremony, Valerie Woods 

BTIA Board Secretary opened the ceremony with 

the singing of the National Anthem. The welcome 

address was given by BTIA President Dr. Dionne 

Miranda, who shared key points on the tourism 

industry. Dr. Miranda expressed that the industry 

has been experiencing difficult times due to the recession and that 

today, more than ever, we must work together as an Association to 

help each other.

to sharpen our saws in 

these difficult times to 

make changes happen," 

she said. She informed the 

gathering that tourism 

operators need to use the 

tools available like the 

internet. She remarked 

that operators need to 

work on marketing and if 

there is no marketing team 

within the establishments, 

President Dionne Miranda making her 

the best person to be 

address 

responsible for that should 

be the owner or manager. 

Tools like the websites must be updated and cohesive with what is 

being promoted as BELIZE the destination, not just individual 

businesses. 

The Bi-Annual report was given in the form of a video 

presentation. The report highlighted the many achievements of the 

BTIA over the past six months in the areas of advocacy, 

administration, governance, revenue generation, training as well 

as membership and outreach. A report from the BTIA Destination 

Chapters was as well included. 

Mr. Noel Jacobs, Project Director of the Sustainable Tourism 

Project gave a presentation that highlighted the project's aims in 

four key areas in Belize- San Ignacio, Placencia, Belize City and 

San Pedro. The project is set to be completed by the Fall of 2012. 

An announcement of the available BTIA Board positions was made 

and included President, 1 st Vice President and 2 nd Vice President. 

The elections for these positions will be carried out at the 

December 3 rd , 2010 AGM. The President Dr. Miranda encouraged 

members to consider leadership in BTIA and send in nominations.

Identification Cards were 

issued to participants in a recently held CPR and First Aid 

training course. The training was held in four destinations - San 

Pedro, Placencia, Corozal and Belize District and facilitated the 

participation of BTIA members from across the country. The 

training was conducted by Belize Emergency Response Team 

(BERT). BTIA next expressed gratitude to sponsors and hosts of 

BETEX 2010 by distribution Certificates of Appreciation.

Finally, BTIA concluded the Summer Staycation Raffle by drawing 

winning tickets from the pool of raffle stubs. The first place 

winner was Ms. Karen Lewis of Belize City, 2 nd Place went to Mr. 

Russell Vellos of Amandala Newspaper in Belize City and third 

place to Ms. Faye Davis of Palm Grove Estate.

Wow, here it is, July 

already. Although many folks are 

away at this time of the year, there's 

always a need for our monthly 

veterinary clinics. It was really nice 

to see Dr Figueroa this month. Dr 

"Fig" doesn't get to Placencia very 

often any more but we always 

appreciate his services when he 

does. He and his family were hosted by Robert's Grove for the 

weekend. Let me take a moment, on behalf of PHS, to express our 

appreciation and gratitude to Risa and Robert Frackman, Robert's 

Grove, for your support and generosity! 

For those who like to know, the statistics for the July Clinic are: 

Spays - 2 dogs, Neuters - 2 dogs, 4/1 (cat vaccinations) - 3

Many of you are taking advantage of the clinics by doing a little 

pet shopping for everything from pet medications to leashes and 

collars, pet treats and toys, and even pet pillows! There will 

always be some special sale going for current members. For 

instance, in July, Advantage (for cats) was offered at a great

In the last two months, I've noticed an unusual number of pets 

coming to clinic with skin or coat issues of one form or 

fashion. Curious as to why the 

increase, consulted Dr "Fig" and 

learned that there is currently a very 

high level of mange in Belize. Let me 

share what I’ve learned about mange 

and its' treatment. 

possibility they will ever have it. Red mange does not affect 

humans. 

The main symptom of red mange on a young dog is from one to 

several hairless areas on their body. It doesn't itch as much as 

sarcoptic mange but it is still a nuisance. In most cases, this 

mange will clear up on its' own. 

Is there any way a pet owner can prevent mange from affecting 

their animals? As I mentioned earlier, all types of mange are 

caused by a mite. An animal is more vulnerable to mange if it is 

malnourished or has a weakened immune system. The use of 

supplements containing fatty acids and nutrients fortify the 

immune system and ward off mite infestations. An inexpensive 

form of these fatty acids is in cod liver oil which can be purchase in 

easy to administer gel caps at places like Wallen’s Pharmacy. 

I hope this article is helpful to you. Sarcoptic mange will not go 

away on its' own. For the sake 

of your animals, please seek 

veterinary treatment if your 

pet has been exposed to, or is 

showing symptoms of

Mange is a common skin condition that 

can cause a lot of discomfort for your 

pet. Although there are several types of mange, they are all 

caused by a specific type of mite. These mites are so tiny, they can 

only be seen with a microscope. Mange will not go away on its' 

own. It's important to know the tell tale signs of mange, because 

they are the only indication that a problem exists. 

The two types of mange I want to address are Sarcoptic and 

Demodectic. Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious form of 

mange, sometimes referred to as scabies. This form of mange can 

spread rapidly among animals and can even spread to 

humans! Isn’t that a scary 

thought! Fortunately, the mite is unable to 

reproduce on humans, but continued 

contact with an infected animal will 

continually renew the supply. Symptoms 

include hair loss and intense itching and 

scratching. Sometimes the tip of the ear 

will be crusted over. The vet will take a 

sample "skin scraping", but often the 

problem can be diagnosed based on the animals appearance. 

In most cases, the treatment for sarcoptic mange is weekly 

injections of Ivermectin for up to a month. Cortisone ointment can 

be applied directly on the sores to help stop the itching, but it will 

not treat the problem. Additionally, every animal that has been 

exposed to this mange must be treated, even if they don't appear 

sick. The life cycle of the mite is several weeks so the entire 

household and areas the infected animal came in contact with 

needs to be cleaned and disinfected. 

The most common form of mange is demodectic, or red 

mange. Generally affecting puppies, red mange is not contagious 

between dogs. Rather, the puppy receives the mite from their 

mothers. If a dog is born without the condition, there is no

2. Clean windows, mirrors, and
