Discovering Scuba with Avadon DiversBy Jolie PollardPBTIA Executive Director, director@placencia.comThe Placencia Breeze - March 2012- Page 3WelcomeA Letter From the EditorScantily-clad, sexy ladies. Halfnakedbuff men. Thumping Caribbeanjams. Yup! Easter isaround the bend! And, I readyfuh bash – me and hundreds ofother Belizeans who book acouple of months in advance tosecure their spot on our beautiful Peninsula.I share the excitement of many other locals whoawait friends and family traveling the length andbreadth of Belize to participate in the biggestparty Placencia sees each year. As we prepare forthe crowds, making sure we’re well stocked ondrinks and food and our hotel rooms are clean,we want to let the Easter Bashers in on a fewthings about our community.Placencia BTIA staff members at the Placencia Tourism Center can now fill you in on our underwater world. We hear and boast about it all thetime. Belize – top scuba divingdestination in the world! We frequentlybump into divers aroundhere on the Placencia Peninsula as they do everydayterrestrial things like eating at restaurants, drinking a cold Belikin, shopping for groceries …But since Sunday, March 11, we look at thesefellow homo sapiens in a totally different light. We feel as though we have been granted copiesof the golden keys to their special secret society, and we can’t help but feel a little ashamed of ourselvesthat it took us this long to explore this gloriousworld right in our own backyard.Placencia BTIA’s Front Desk and MembershipOfficer Apolo Caliz and I joined a team of diverson Avadon’s beautiful “Ava Josette”, admittedlyfeeling slightly intimidated as they handled theirequipment like champs and chatted about theirgazillion dives. “Is this your first time?”, inquireda young teenage American girl who spent a goodpart of the boat ride laying out on the bow of theboat completely unfazed as we sped over choppyseas. “You’re going to love it!” This was herfourth trip to Belize, and she’s even dived theblue hole.I quickly realize that these wetsuit people arelooking out for us, but I haven’t even entered thewater yet and just the sight of all the tanks sittingalongside the onboard seating area has my heartracing. Avadon Dive Instructors Jerome Williamsand James Andrews have been checking in regularly. Then, James leads us to the bow to go overa quiz we took in the Avadon office earlier thatday. It all made sense, but I needed to be in thewater to really get that flip chart. The dive boat anchors in a shallow area of theSouth Water Marine Reserve – the largest marinereserve in Belize – after cutting through gorgeousturquoise waters. Jerome gears us up withour vests, our weight belts and our fins and DiveMaster Trainee Patrick Parks hands us our masks.I was nervous, but I went for it and broke somewaves. I was in. Flippers, tank, vest and all. “I’malive. Okay. This isn’t so bad.” I look over atApolo, and he doesn’t seem scared at all eventhough I was the one who didn’t hesitate for asecond to accept this Discover Scuba invitation.Ron SpilmanJerome reviews the basics we covered in the flipchart with James, but I ask him to repeat himselfmany times just to calm my nerves. I’m astonishedby his patience. We go underwater, breathingthrough our regulators. Jerome with his newpuffy face, instructs us to remove the regulator. This wasn’t something that we would necessarilyhave to do during our dive, but an essential safetyexercise in Discover Scuba. Apolo goes beforeme and succeeds on his first attempt Jeromeawards him a firm handshake. I wasn’t as cool. Igave Jerome the “something’s wrong” hand signal, and we return to the surface again and again.Poor Jerome. I couldn’t trust that if I let this contraptionout of my mouth while underwater andexhale and reinstate the contraption into mymouth, that I would actually live to see anotherday. I thought about retreating to the boat andchickening out, but I took every last bit of couragein me and forced myself to let go of the fearand trust my new best friend, the regulator. I wasawarded a handshake too! We passed this importantinitiation into the world of scuba and after welearned how to breathe underwater – even in ascenario where we would need to replace ourregulators, it was smooth, graceful ... well, somewhatgraceful flipping and plenty of “okay” signals.Later the boat takes us to a deeper location in theReserve, and we stayed near to Jerome. We sawbrilliantly colored and animated marine organismsup close and personal – all I could think is,“How will I ever enjoy snorkeling as much afterthis?!” At one point I felt I could engage in a longconversation with a massive grouper staring atme from inside his comfy sponge coral. We sawhuge lobsters that were surprisingly aggressive, reaching out at us with their antennae while defendingtheir coral homes. We also spotted severalof the notorious lionfish who recently stolepassports to enter the waters of Belize. Then, thecoveted moment we were hoping for … a beautifulloggerhead turtle swims out of the blue. It wasmagical, and I kept my eyes on the endangeredcreature for as long as I could, making sure tocapture its image in the permanent storage compartmentof my brain. They own this place. This is their dominion. Theentire experience is so humbling.Time passes quickly underwater. We started ouradventure at 1 p.m. and after our breathing exercise, our first dive and snack breaks on scrumptiouscoconut carrot cake from Dangriga, Apoloand I were getting ready for a night snorkel offSouth Water Caye ...Belizeans are famous for a strong sense of pride, but having been visiting Placencia for the past 26years and having been living here for the pasteight months, I have to say the pride in this communityhere is like none I have ever witnessedbefore. While some of us have our differences, atthe end of the day we all come together to supporta common cause: be it, chipping in to helpsomeone undergo surgery, assisting the childrenof a deceased parent, supporting an event benefitingthe local tourism industry … Placencia peoplecare about their 12-mile-long scratch of landand its surrounding waters with all their heart. And we ask you to keep that in mind as you enjoywhat we have to offer during the Easter holidays.Throw away your trash. Respect our businessowners. Be patient with our bartenders andservers! Tip well. Most importantly, bash it up!Peace and be safe!Jolie Pollard, director@placencia.comFinding VibrantNightlife ... UnderwaterBy Apolo CalizPBTIA Front Desk and Membership Officer,frontdesk@placencia.comIf you thought that underwater adventure by dayis fascinating, you must do a night snorkel. Thereare creatures lurking around at night that you willnot have the privilege to see during the day. AvadonDivers Snorkel Guide Reina Eiley made mesee the underwater life in a whole new perspective.I used to believe that at night, everythingwent to sleep – but I was wrong. It’s nothing likethat – everything is so much more exciting andalive. I saw these little mini translucent palmtrees in the water that go underground when theyare touched. I later learned they are called featherduster worms. All the micro organisms that wemiss during the day are much more visible likethe tiny little glowing creatures that swarmedaround us like fireflies. This is definitely a trip Iwill recommend to anyone who is interested inexploring our pristine World Heritage Site.FEATURE YOUR TOUR IN THEPLACENCIA BREEZE!Let our team join your weekendtrip and help us get the word out!Call us at 523-4045 or e-mailinfo@placencia.com

The Placencia Breeze March 2012- Page 19Wait… There’s More to Gladden Spit Than Whale Sharks!By Rachel T. GrahamDirector of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Gulf and Caribbean Sharks and Rays Programme, rgraham@wcs.orgIt’sMarch again and for many in Belize and abroad, the calendar marksthe annual return of whale sharks to Gladden Spit. Eager to stop in at theBarrier Reef’s premier shark dining spot to feed on the spawn of cuberaand dog snappers (Lutjanus cyanopterus and L. jocu respectively), whalesharks arrive from other parts of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico to feedon eggs less than one mm in diameter. Satellite and acoustic tagging of whalesharks conducted between 2000 until 2011 revealed that Gladden Spit is a keystop over point for mainly juvenile male whale sharks. These animals aremoving from one key dining spot in the Western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexicoto another. In fact, tagging studies have shown that the Mesoamerican BarrierReef that encompasses Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico is a migratorycorridor for the world’s largest fish, which they travel along feeding onpelagic sprat in Honduras to snapper spawn in Belize and plankton and tunaspawn in Mexico. Fromthere the animals eitherreturn south or voyage intothe Gulf of Mexico or overto Cuba. What many people don’tknow though is that theconditions at GladdenSpit’s natural underwatertheater orchestrate a dizzyingdiversity of animalsother than the world’s largestfish. The cast of greatsinclude at least 27 speciesof medium to large sizefish that spawn at the siteand no less than 14 speciesof other sharks and rays.Once Belize protected thewhale shark critical feedinghabitat at Gladden Spit in2000, conferred nationalprotection on whale sharksin 2003, and also protected11 of the country’s fishspawning aggregation sites,we turned our attention tothe many other species ofsharks and rays that have received little attention in the country. Populations ofsharks and rays globally are in dramatic decline due to overfishing with a high-end figure of 73 million sharks fished annually and depletions of over 90 percentfor several species in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Few know thatBelize has hosted a shark fishery over the past few decades. From the 1960sto 1993, the fishery initially provided celebrants of the Lenten period prior toEaster with salted dried shark fillet; however, mounting demand from theAsian fin market has seen greater pressure and extraction of these fishes. Thedried fins are processed to make shark fin soup, a cultural delicacy, but whichis also known to contain high levels of methyl mercury. This potent and damagingneurotoxin is also prevalent in the meat of at least 11 shark species inBelize suggesting that it is better to eat panades made out of finfish. The ecological role that sharks and rays play differs according to the speciesstudied. But sharks and rays are generally recognized to help to regulate preypopulations and by doing so can help ecosystems such as the coral reef tomaintain resilience against climate change and degradation. They accomplishthis in part by enabling herbivorous fish to maintain their population levelsand clean the reef of stifling macroalgae. When there is too much macroalgaenew corals have nowhere to settle and contribute to maintaining coral cover.Several studies conducted primarily in the Pacific have shown that areas ofhigh shark abundance correlates not only with healthier and more widespreadcoral coverage but also with high abundance of other large fish species includingjacks, groupers and snappers.Dr. Graham and Belizean students in “Kids Meet Sharks” program funded by the Whitley Fund forNature, get up close and personal with small tiger shark by Calabash Caye.Tony RathSo to better understand our sharks in Belize and the role that marine reservesplay in providing protection, we expanded our broadly collaborative Belizeoperated and based shark research conducted over the past 14 years, to encompassa range of coastal andreef associated sharks andrays. Species included in ourstudies include: Caribbeanreef sharks, lemon sharks, nurse sharks, great hammerheads,Caribbean sharpnosesharks, blacktip sharks, tigersharks, Southern stingrays(diamond shape and mostcommonly seen), eagle rays, longnose stingrays (brown, shaped like a southern stingraybut possessing a sharpsnout), Caribbean whiptailstingrays (large round andgrey), and even the moreocean going silky sharks, which are often found swimmingwith schools of tuna aswell as the transiting whalesharks. Our study conductedin southern Belize in partnershipwith the Fisheries Department, the Forestry Department, tour-guides, fishers, the private sector and the nongovernmentalorganisations:Southern Environmental Association(SEA), TIDE and SATIIM, included the South Water Caye MarineReserve (MR), Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes MR, Port Honduras MR,Paynes’ Creek National Park, the Sarstoon and Temash National Park and theSapodilla Cayes MR examined catch per unit effort (number of sharks andrays captured per 100 hooks per hour) inside and outside of the marine reserves. We found a significantly higher abundance of sharks and rays insidethe protected areas versus outside suggesting that marine reserves bestow protectionfor sharks regardless of levels of enforcement, which vary betweenMRs. The protective aspect is also partly due to the fact that these marine reservespossess a common ban on the use of nets and longlines, the primarygears used to catch sharks. There are still many questions regarding the status of sharks in northern Belize,a transboundary area with Mexico. Please see GLADDEN SPIT’S MARINE DIVERSITY on page 20.

The Placencia Breeze– March 2012- Page 20Gladden Spit’s Marine DiversityContinued from Page NineteenFollowing on the success of the Southern Belize Shark and Ray study, webegan a long-term study of the sharks, rays and turtles at Lighthouse ReefAtoll in 2007 and conducted a pilot northern component to ourSouthern Belize Study in 2010 that identified what appears to bethe first bull shark nursery ground in the Mesoamerican BarrierReef. This year we broadened the pilot project to a full-scale projectthat encompasses the coast of northern Belize to the BarrierReef and out to Lighthouse Reef Atoll. We expanded our tools touse baited remote underwater video cameras (BRUVs) and inwater transects. BRUVs literally work like the commonly usedterrestrial camera traps used to study species such as jaguars.Using a set amount of time on the ocean’s floor and bait, theseinstallations tell us how many sharks and rays visit different sites, offering comparisons of abundance and diversity between habitatsand areas with and without protection. Our in-water transectshave already provided us with excellent insights into the areas ofhighest ray and turtle densities according to different habitats andprotection levels (e.g. inside or outside of MRs). Synthetically, these studies will provide us with a countrywide status of sharksand rays and information on their relative abundance and diversity, their demographics, feeding behavior and favored habitats.Anne at the Royal Geographic Society in central London. The award supportsher conservation work to protect 'top predators' like sharks thatmaintain the diversity of the entire reef ecosystem as well as maintainingthe star attractions for the tourists who visit Belize’s beautiful reef.Graham has dedicated 20 years of her life to saving endangered specieslike the whale shark.During the course of the Southern Belize shark and ray study, wealso uncovered a shark fishery conducted primarily by fishersfrom neighboring countries as well as information that nursesharks and rays were being increasingly targeted as the largermore commercially valuable sharks were harder to find. This information, along with increased outreach to the public on the longterm value of living sharks and increased pressure on the governmentto curb fishing pressure on sharks, led to a first round of legislationin 2011 that bans the fishing of nurse sharks and limits thenumber and size of nets deployed in unprotected areas.A public perception survey conducted with Belizeans throughout thecountry last year revealed that Belizeans hold mixed feelings towardssharks, somewhat scared of them but also understanding that these animalsare necessary alive for the good of the reef and country. Few Belizeanseat shark, which is a good thing considering the high methyl mercurylevels found in over 177 samples that we tested from 11 differentspecies. Most importantly is that regardless of age or sex, occupation orlocation, the majority of respondents felt strongly that sharks and raysshould be protected. One of the best ways to foster changes in attitudes towards sharks is byenabling people to see them up close and personal. Through our researchand Kids Meet Sharks program funded by the Whitley Fund for Nature,we have brought over 75 Belizean students, 14 teachers, 23 Belizean biologistsand marine reserve rangers and 53 fishers to meet sharks andrays up close and personal. For a taste of one of our educational tripswith Belizean 10-12-year-old students who meet sharks and rays for thefirst time, do look us up on You Tube (Kids meet sharks 2011) or via ourproject web site (www.belizesharks.org).We have our work cut out for us to elucidate the world of sharks and raysin Belize and promote their effectiveconservation. You can help!Take a moment to visit our BelizeShark Project web site(www.belizesharks.org) and viewour award winning documentary“Where have our sharks gone?”and log sightings of sharks orrays that you may have madeduring your snorkel and divetrips. And of course, if you haveseen and photographed whalesharks, please upload your informationand photos onto ECO-CEAN’s site(www.whaleshark.org).We look forward to hearing backfrom you and until then: HappySharking (and Raying!) ▪Rachel T. Grawbowski Fundraiser forSt. John’s Preschool, SuccessfulBy Ewa GrabowskiVolunteer, ewabelize@yahoo.comThis year was another great year at the Arts Festival. Lots of kids drawing– those gel pens sure were enjoyed!! We got lots of very bright pictures. We had fantastic calendars that the kids made at the school. Allthe teachers really did a great job to get each child to participate, andthen worked hard to glue all the pictures on the calendar. The silent auction for the artwork donated by Ana Osegueda, Africa,Miguel, JoAnn, Mia, as well as some of the jewelry donated by BarbMcNab, and Mocha lattes donated by Above grounds, raised $280.50for the pre-school. Ana is in high school, and Africa lives on a boat fromGuatemala, so both made the extra effort. The calendars and donations raised $930 for St. John’s. The total is$1,212.50! Africa showed us how to recycle cans, and we made paperclipholders, or little containers that can be used for spare change, etc. It’s great to get cans collected in the village and to make something outof them. We even got the principal and teachers making them.We want to thank the whole gang who helped make this possible. First,BTIA for the booth and tent. Then to Print Belize in Belmopan whoprinted the calendars and gave us lots of paper for a great price.
