May 23 ½ Day –Last Day of School
We have worked hard and we are ROCKING THE TEST!
On Monday May 7 th , we will celebrate with our 2 nd
Annual“Dress Like a Rock Star” Day! All students K-5 are
encouraged to rock your best school-appropriate attire as we
celebrate the end of TCAP!

From Our Principal …
As our 3 rd , 4 th , and 5 th grade students begin the last two TCAP tests (Science on Wednesday
and Social Studies on Thursday), I want to thank Kenrose parents for all you have done to
support your children’s learning this year. Thank you especially for preparing your children for
TCAP by studying with them, making sure they get rest and eat a good breakfast prior to
testing, and encouraging them to do their best. As parents of 3 rd -5 th graders already know,
TCAP has taken on even more importance this year as throughout Tennessee, TCAP will be
calculated as 15% of students’ second semester grades, and students in 3 rd grade who score
Below Basic on reading will be required to participate in a summer intervention before being
promoted to 4 th grade. In addition, also by a new state law in effect this year, TCAP results
determine between 35% and 50% of each educator’s evaluation for the year, even for
educators in non-tested grades such as K-2, specials teachers, etc. All of our teachers and staff
at Kenrose work hard to ensure not only that our students do well on TCAP, but that they
learn the required curriculum, which can be quite challenging. This can be a very stressful
time for educators, knowing the importance of the performance of our students on this one
assessment. Thank you for your support of our teachers and staff; it makes a huge difference
to all of us. If you are interested in the types of questions asked on TCAP, you can view item
samplers and practice tests at http://www.tn.gov/education/assessment/ach_samplers.shtml
.
As we move into the future, you will be hearing more about a new curriculum called the
Common Core State Standards, which has been adopted by the state of Tennessee along with
47 other states. Our state will be implementing the Common Core curriculum in phases,
beginning with the first phase in 2012-13. For more information about the Common Core, visit
http://www.corestandards.org/ .
Thank you for your support of the Kenrose PTO Fun Run this week that supports our PTO
budget! The Fun Run provides funding for instructional materials and equipment that is
invaluable to teaching and learning at Kenrose. Each teacher receives funding directly from
the PTO, and larger ticket items for the school are funded in the PTO budget. If you are
curious about items purchased with PTO funding that are being used to help your children
learn and grow, ask any teacher or staff member at Kenrose! Once again, thank you for your
support of the Fun Run!
TCAP 101: How to Help “Rock the Test” on 4/27, 5/30, 5/2 & 5/3
TCAP TESTING
The Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Achievement Test (TCAP), is a
timed, multiple choice test for 3 rd -5 th graders that measures skills in reading, language
arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
TIPS FOR PARENTS
• See that your child is rested and eats breakfast the day of the test.
• See that your child arrives to school on time and is relaxed.
• Discuss the test openly and in a positive way.
• Encourage your child to do the best work possible.
• Do not send your child to school if illness is apparent.
• Do not remove your child from school on test days for appointments.
• Discuss the test openly and in a positive way.
Parent Strategies for Reducing Test Anxiety
• Have realistic expectations of your child's performance while encouraging his/her best efforts.
• Emphasize that the test is only one measure of academic performance.
• Emphasize that test scores do not determine a person's worth.
Brain research shows… less sugar and high fiber is best. Protein = long term energy
Sleep, sleep and sleep = a healthy brain (have a set bedtime and wake-time)

Way to go Kenrose Cardinals!

OUR GOAL IS 100% PARTICIPATION
for the
2012 ANNUAL KENROSE FUN RUN!!!
Our annual FUN RUN is on Friday, May 4th! Our goal for the 2012 Fun
Run is to have 100% school and student participation! The classroom in
each grade level that has the highest percentage of pledge
envelopes turned in by Thursday, May 3rd will be rewarded with an
ice cream party! Also, every classroom with 100% of the envelopes
turned in by this date will receive an ice cream party. If a student
turns in their envelope, regardless of the number of pledges or flat
donations, they will receive credit for their participation.
As of Monday, April 30 th , only 13% of Kenrose students have turned in
their Fun Run envelopes. Please return your child’s envelope today so
Kenrose can meet the goal of 100% participation.
Thank you for your continued support of Kenrose!

It’s time to get your pledges for the annual
KENROSE FUN RUN!!!
It’s almost time for our 2 nd big fundraiser of the year! Our annual FUN RUN
will be held on Friday, May 4th. IT IS GOING TO BE A BLAST! Pledge
envelopes and information were sent home with your children Thursday, April
19th. Please see the letter that was sent home with the pledge envelope for
detailed information.
You are encouraged to solicit as many sponsors as you can (grandparents,
aunts and uncles, neighbors, etc.) and collect pledges for laps completed or
simply give a flat donation. You’ll be amazed how quickly the money adds up!!!
If every Kenrose student raises $50 through pledges or flat donations, we
will meet our goal this year! More importantly, our goal is to have 100%
school and student participation! Please keep in mind that this is our last
fundraiser for the year. The money raised from this event funds our general
PTO budget and is used for important items such as technology upgrades,
computer lab technician, individual committees, landscaping, playground,
library books, etc. We encourage you to ask your child's teacher about all
the useful items purchased with the money collected from Fun Run.
If you or your child(ren) do not have a preference with collecting pledges
or a flat donation, please consider sending in a flat donation to Kenrose.
We sincerely appreciate either, but it is easier for accounting purposes if a
flat donation is sent for Fun Run.
As of Monday, April 30 th , we have collected $3743.00 in flat donations and
pledges towards our goal of raising $20,000.00 for Fun Run. Please send in
your child’s envelope today so Kenrose can meet our goal for Fun Run 2012.

Thank you for your continued support of Kenrose!
Please make note of your
scheduled time-thank you.
Dear Parents,
THE 2012 KENROSE FUN RUN IS HERE!
On Friday, May 4th, the students will participate in our annual FUN RUN. The money raised from this event
funds our general PTO budget and is used for important items at Kenrose such as technology, computer lab
technician, individual committees, landscaping, playground, library books etc., etc.! If each child raises $50, we
will meet our annual projected budget. More importantly, our goal this year is to have 100% school and student
participation! Here are a few important notes:
• Pledge / collection envelopes are attached in this packet.
• Students will take pledges for the amount of laps they can run or walk on a 1/6 mile track in 30 minutes
during an assigned time on Friday, May 4th.
• Envelopes with pledges and any flat donations are due on Wednesday, May 2nd in order for the student to
receive credit for the classroom participation contest.
• Begin taking pledges from families, friends and co-workers ASAP. Pledges can be made for the number of
laps the students will run/walk OR a flat donation can be made. We encourage a $1.00 minimum pledge per
lap for simplicity in accounting.
Please make all checks payable to KENROSE PTO.
• On Friday, May 4 th , all students (whether they turned in envelopes or not) will run or walk the track for 30
minutes. The number of laps completed will be recorded on the envelope and sent home with the students
to collect their pledges.
• All pledged money is due by Friday, May 11th.
• Parents are encouraged to come and cheer on their child! You may also run/walk with them. A schedule of
class times is included. If you would like to help, please send in attached volunteer form. Younger siblings
are welcome, but will not be allowed on the track.
• Please make sure to send your child with a bottle of water to be used during the Fun Run. Popsicles will be
provided by Publix.
• If you or your children do not have a preference on taking pledges or a flat donation, please consider
sending in a flat donation to Kenrose. We sincerely appreciate either, but it is easier for accounting
purposes to have a flat donation.
If you have any questions, please contact: Johnna Miller @ 618-4776 or Donna Walsh @ 482-7227
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF KENROSE!!!

is our monthly Skate Party
at Brentwood Skate Center
from 4:30pm to 6:30pm!
Plan on coming to play skate games, choose songs, and have fun with
your friends from school. You will have a great time! The 2nd
Tuesday of each month is designated for Kenrose Elementary School.
Skating is from 4:30-6:30 pm at Brentwood Skate Center, located at
we will get credit -- This is a great way to help Kenrose PTO raise
money for our school! Also, sign in with our skate mom, Lori Dawson,
at the Kenrose table so your name will go into the drawing for door
prizes given near the end of each party. The class with the most
attendance will be able to see the Lolly Pop Stand--it will be brought
to your classroom the next day and your entire class will receive
treats!
Don’t miss the last skate party of the year. We will be drawing names
for one lucky girl and one lucky boy from Kenrose for a special
prize. Look for more details to come next week!!

Children do not always make the most healthy choices when it comes to eating, and several parents have
expressed a desire to limit ice cream and other treats from the Kenrose café. Parents who wish to limit your
child’s ability to purchase less healthy choices, including daily ice cream, are encouraged to do so by going to
http://www.wcs.edu/foodsvc/restrictions_form.html.
If you have any questions about restrictions please contact cafeteria manager Kim Matlock. Thank you for
helping your child make healthy choices; they impact learning in a positive way!
Child Find
include children who are gifted (having high intellectual potential) as well as students who have trouble seeing
or hearing, need special education services, or need supports to learn. Children with giftedness or special
education needs can be found in all types of families. It is important to find these children and give them the
help they need as early as possible. Families or anyone who is concerned about how a child is doing can refer
the child for screening by calling Student Support Services at 472-4130.

News from our Library
The end of the year is quickly coming. It has been great watching our students grow as readers. As a school, we
have checked-out over 36,000 books this year. That’s about 7,500 more than last year. Way to go and keep
reading!
The end of the school year also means inventorying our library, so all library books will be due May 7.
This helps us get our books organized, shelved, inventory completed and our library ready for next year. Thanks
for your help in making the end of the year go smoothly for our library.
Thanks,
