University Card<br />

• Oxford University identity card<br />

• Carry it with you at all times<br />

• Used in <strong>College</strong> to reset your <strong>College</strong> password<br />

• Used to access all OUCS Services, libraries,<br />

departments, <strong>College</strong> facilities<br />

• If lost report immediately to <strong>College</strong><br />

Email<br />

• Email is one of the main ways that people at Oxford<br />

communicate with one another.<br />

• Students are expected to have read, and act upon,<br />

communications from the college staff and other<br />

senior members. All students are responsible for<br />

keeping themselves informed by:<br />

• Checking their pigeonhole daily;<br />

• Checking their college e‐mail accounts daily;<br />

• Looking out for notices on the <strong>Somerville</strong> web‐site,<br />

www.some.ox.ac.uk and any posted in the Lodge and Front<br />

Hall


Email<br />

• Use your University account for ALL University<br />

correspondence<br />

• Email addresses can be looked up via the web:<br />

• Obey the University’s rules for computer use<br />

• DO NOT disclose your password to anyone<br />

• Change your password frequently<br />

• Basic SPAM filtering available through<br />

Herald/Webmail


Email Addresses<br />

• All new students and staff have an e‐mail address and<br />

account created when their University Card is issued<br />

• University email address:<br />

• first.last@some.ox.ac.uk<br />

• Beware, some long form addresses ending oxford.ac.uk still<br />

exist, new accounts don’t have this form as an option<br />

• Graduates generally have addresses for department and<br />

college. Normally both go to the same Oxford account but<br />

Getting Connected<br />

• What we need to get you online:<br />

• Internet Access Form completed from you, please be<br />

aware that it will take a day or two to process new forms<br />

in 0 th week<br />

• You must have a valid University Card<br />

• <strong>College</strong> Username and Password, you must have<br />

changed your password before it will work from your<br />

room<br />

• You must have Anti‐Virus Software and keep your<br />

computer updated at all times


Password Problems<br />

• Why do I have more than one password?<br />

• OUCS are responsible for your Herald/Web mail email account<br />

which is also your Single Sign On account (SSO)<br />

• <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>College</strong> are responsible for your local access inside the<br />

<strong>College</strong> and therefore give you an account to access our servers, and<br />

also an account to access your MyBackup Service<br />

Network usage<br />

• Peer‐to‐peer file sharing (e.g. Kazza, Limewire) is<br />

forbidden and may result in disconnection or a<br />

fine<br />

• 4OD, BBC iPlayer, Sky Anytime are all forbidden<br />

on the network<br />

• Skype is OK as long as you set it up as specified on<br />

the OUCS pages:<br />

What can go wrong?<br />

• Computer virus? ‐ protect your computer, software &<br />

regular updates available from the <strong>College</strong><br />

• Keep machines up to date!<br />

• Windows Update<br />

• Mac Update<br />

• Corrupt/lost files? Take regular backups<br />

• No space for new email? ‐ delete unwanted messages ‐<br />

watch for big attachments<br />

• Forgotten password on:<br />

• Herald? Reset it using your security question<br />

• <strong>College</strong>/dept. network? See <strong>College</strong>/dept. <strong>IT</strong> Staff


<strong>IT</strong> Workshops<br />

• If you are having trouble getting connected, want help installing<br />

Sophos, or want the MyBackup software installed then you will<br />

need to come to an <strong>IT</strong> Workshop this week:<br />

What happens next?<br />

• Have your University Card (bod card) ready<br />

• Check you have the right details<br />

• Please sign for your account<br />

• You will need to find a <strong>College</strong> Computer<br />

• change your password (single sheet)<br />

• Activate your Herald/Webauth account (envelope)<br />

• Try it from your room
