University Card
• Oxford University identity card
• Carry it with you at all times
• Used in College to reset your College password
• Used to access all OUCS Services, libraries,
departments, College facilities
• If lost report immediately to College

Email
• Email is one of the main ways that people at Oxford
communicate with one another.
• Students are expected to have read, and act upon,
communications from the college staff and other
senior members. All students are responsible for
keeping themselves informed by:
• Checking their pigeonhole daily;
• Checking their college e‐mail accounts daily;
• Looking out for notices on the Somerville web‐site,
www.some.ox.ac.uk and any posted in the Lodge and Front
Hall

Email
• Use your University account for ALL University
correspondence
• Email addresses can be looked up via the web:
• www.ox.ac.uk/contact
• Obey the University’s rules for computer use
• DO NOT disclose your password to anyone
• Change your password frequently
• Basic SPAM filtering available through
Herald/Webmail

Email Addresses
• All new students and staff have an e‐mail address and
account created when their University Card is issued
• University email address:
• first.last@some.ox.ac.uk
• Beware, some long form addresses ending oxford.ac.uk still
exist, new accounts don’t have this form as an option
• Graduates generally have addresses for department and
college. Normally both go to the same Oxford account but

Getting Connected
• What we need to get you online:
• Internet Access Form completed from you, please be
aware that it will take a day or two to process new forms
in 0 th week
• You must have a valid University Card
• College Username and Password, you must have
changed your password before it will work from your
room
• You must have Anti‐Virus Software and keep your
computer updated at all times

Password Problems

• Why do I have more than one password?
• OUCS are responsible for your Herald/Web mail email account
which is also your Single Sign On account (SSO)
• Somerville College are responsible for your local access inside the
College and therefore give you an account to access our servers, and
also an account to access your MyBackup Service

(Maitland 28) during drop in hours (Mon ‐ Fri, 10:00 ‐ 12:00, 14:00 ‐
16:00) or make an appointment by emailing it.support@some.ox.ac.uk or

Network usage
• Peer‐to‐peer file sharing (e.g. Kazza, Limewire) is
forbidden and may result in disconnection or a
fine
• 4OD, BBC iPlayer, Sky Anytime are all forbidden
on the network
• Skype is OK as long as you set it up as specified on
the OUCS pages:

What can go wrong?
• Computer virus? ‐ protect your computer, software &
regular updates available from the College
• Keep machines up to date!
• Windows Update
• Mac Update
• Corrupt/lost files? Take regular backups
• No space for new email? ‐ delete unwanted messages ‐
watch for big attachments
• Forgotten password on:
• Herald? Reset it using your security question
• College/dept. network? See College/dept. IT Staff

IT Workshops
• If you are having trouble getting connected, want help installing
Sophos, or want the MyBackup software installed then you will
need to come to an IT Workshop this week:
• Thursday 9 th October
• Flora Anderson Hall
• 10am to 4pm
• Friday 10 th October

• 10am to 3pm
• After that you will need to come to the IT Office next week
• The IT Office is located in Maitland 28 and the opening hours are:
• Monday to Friday during term time only
• 10:00 ‐ 12:00
• 14:00 – 16:00
