Local Government Roundtables continued<br />
Broadcasters and <strong>the</strong> National <strong>League</strong> of Cities have<br />
jointly made efforts this year to talk to local elected officials<br />
and community leaders from across <strong>the</strong> country<br />
about ways <strong>the</strong>y can help educate and prepare members<br />
of <strong>the</strong>ir communities for this change in television<br />
transmission. This roundtable will address <strong>the</strong> ways in<br />
which local officials can help people in <strong>the</strong>ir communities<br />
with <strong>the</strong> DTV transition.<br />

Recycling<br />
Hazardous waste recycling and disposal; recycling<br />
cell phones, TVs and o<strong>the</strong>r consumer electronics; CFL<br />

Saving energy and improving infrastructure with no<br />
up-front costs: Energy performance contracting<br />
Electrical costs for most ratepayers have increased 15-<br />
33% largely due to <strong>the</strong> rising cost of fuel. Local governments<br />
that use energy performance contracting are able<br />
to save energy, improve <strong>the</strong> environment (both indoors<br />
and out) and address aging infrastructure issues without<br />
incurring up-front costs. Find out how localities<br />
are reducing <strong>the</strong>ir energy consumption by an average of<br />
23 percent, and are able to use those savings to address<br />
infrastructure problems.<br />

New accounting rules require all local governments<br />
to begin reporting on <strong>the</strong>ir financial statements <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
liabilities associated with health insurance and certain<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r benefits provided to retirees. Representatives<br />
from <strong>VML</strong>/VACo Finance will discuss <strong>the</strong> new requirements<br />
and <strong>the</strong> steps necessary for compliance. Also<br />
included are tips on obtaining an actuarial study and<br />
reducing <strong>the</strong> cost of funding your liability.<br />
