BLUES NEWS
Dandenong/Eltham Tournament 2013
A big well done to all our families that headed over to Melbourne for the January long weekend tournament. We sent 25 teams this
year which was the largest number they have ever received from an interstate club. There were many high standard and well
contested games with most of our teams ending with more wins than loses.
This year we had more Grand Final victories than any other previous year, going 5 for 5 in Grand Final matches, including back to
back wins for Ashleigh Ridley in the U12 Girls grade.
Our winning teams were;
U10 Girls Div 1 in the B/C grade Winners 41 – 14 Grand Final MVP Tayla Brazel
U12 Girls Div 2(2) in the 12 C(1) grade Winners 22 – 11
U16 Boys Div 2(2) in the 16 B(3) grade Winners 50 – 26
U16 Girls Div 2 in the 16 G(1) grade Winners 33 – 21 Grand Final MVP Erina Marafioti
U18 Boys Div 2(2) in the 18 B(1) grade Winners 38 – 32 OT Grand Final MVP Shaun Pontifex
Next year we will be looking to attend in even greater numbers.
Grand Final
This year Sturt entered an Under 10 Girls
Team as 5 of the 7 Div 1 Girls were
already at the tournament with siblings
and the remaining girls were keen to join
them and have a go.
It was a juggling act for parents and
Coach Paul with all the games being at
surrounding stadiums and often games
clashing with other team commitments
at Dandenong, but everyone pulled
together to make it happen.
It was obvious early on we had a strong
team with the girls winning all 6 games,
taking out the Grand Final with a
convincing 41 to 14 win against
Hawthorn.
To their credit the girls received
congratulations and thanks from many
of our opposition coaches for the spirit in
which they played so well done girls. By
the end of the tournament we could see
improvement in all the girls’ individual
games and the team work in the Grand
Final was outstanding. Well done!
Thanks to all the parents for supporting
the team, Paul for coaching and
Hannah for helping out too. Paul could
not make it to the Grand Final as he was
coaching another Sturt team in their
Grand Final so Katherine and Jess
McPhail stepped in to encourage the
girls and I think they had just as much
fun, if not more than the girls teaching
them to high five!!!
Boys U12C (Div 3/4)
PAGE 3
DANDENONG / ELTHAM TOURNAMENT
Sturt normally wouldn’t nominate a 12C (div 3/4)
team for this tournament, but this year there were 7
Under 10 and 2 Under 12 Div 3’s boys who were
going to be there watching their siblings play. So
rather than have those boys sit around, we put out
the call to see if the parents and boys were willing
to commit to play in 12C and make the most of the
trip. The boys all jumped at the chance to play and
were not remotely phased by the prospects of
playing the bigger, older and more experience
Victorian teams in 12C. Marty Hinton from Under
10’s offered to coach and 2 more boys from Under
12 div 3’s offered to come over with their dads to
strengthen the team and gain their own
experience. So with a team of 11 Marty prepared
the boys with 3 training sessions prior to the
tournament to run through positions and plays in the
hope that it would make them more competitive.
We were quietly expecting devastating scores but
knew the experience would be invaluable and hey,
it beats sitting around. However, the boys proved us
all wrong and despite losing all 5 games, put up an
amazing display of hard work and enthusiasm to
keep their losses to a maximum of 18 and even
coming within 1 point in one game. The opposition
were from strong clubs Dandenong, Sherbrooke,
Sandringham, Casey and Frankston and one was a
12.1 team, so the boys should all be very proud of
their efforts. During their last game the boys drew
many Sturt and other club supporter’s courtside
cheering them on and afterwards we received
many positive comments about how surprised they
were at the competitiveness of the boys despite
their age and mostly smaller sizes. Along with the
experience playing, the boys had an enormous
amount of fun off court and built strong friendships
and are all keen to get a back to their teams and
encourage them to enter the tournament next
year.
DANDENONG / ELTHAM TOURNAMENT
U12 Div1 girls
The weekend started a little slow for
us and we lost our first 2 games
against Altona and Dandenong. Our
3 rd game was very close against
Melbourne Tigers. We were up by 1
point with 15 seconds to go but
unfortunately the girls lost possession
and the Tigers scored and we went
down by 1 point. Disappointing but
exciting just the same. We went on to
beat Canberra by 6 points. Our last
game was against Nunawading
(who are top in Melbourne). It was a
great game and very close and the
team played extremely well and we
won by 4 points. An awesome way to
finish the tournament. Thanks to our
coaches Jason and Morgan.
Back to Back Champions:
U12 Girls Div2
The team consisted of Paige Ridley, Katherine Cole, Ella
Johnson, Millie Fidge, Jewel Ramintas, Lizzy Hayman
and Amy McDonald and were coached by Ashleigh
Ridley. With only 7 players it was a big risk – but a risk
that paid off with the girls going through undefeated,
taking out the final 22-11 against Dandenong. Back to
back wins for Sturt in this grade and back to back wins
for Paige, Jewel, Amy and Ashleigh who were all a part
of the team last year. Special thanks must go the
Katherine “Boo” Cole from Norwood for joining us on
the trip enabling us to enter the team. We could not
have done it without you!
The weekend started first thing Saturday morning with
our first pool game against Dandenong. We jumped
them early and held on for a good win. They changed
their defence at half time and tried a full court press
which was something a little different for our girls to
experience. This combined with one of our girls vomiting
on court just after half time meant that we were down
to 6 players and they came back at us. We learnt a lot
from this game that we could then apply when we met
them again in the final.
With all players back on deck the remaining pool
games on Saturday and Sunday against Western Port,
Casey, Melbourne and Sandringham all went relatively
smoothly and allowed us to work on our game plans.
With Ella and Amy literally head and shoulders above
the opposition we dominated the rebounding and
blocked up the key defensively. By the end of Sunday,
fatigue and a few niggling injuries and sore muscles
were beginning to set in. Sickness again hit the group
with several players feeling unwell culminating in
another vomit at 1am by one of them. Despite these
setbacks the team pulled together, supported each
other and all suited up for the semi-final on Monday
morning against Knox. With quick rotations and
constant checks on sick kids with a bucket not far away
we managed a good win 26-13.
The final was set for midday Monday against
Dandenong. Dandenong had come to play with a
huge and supportive home crowd behind them. They
hit us hard with a full press up the court but our girls
were ready for it and moved the ball well to get
through, jumping to an 8-2 lead and taking the crowd
out of the game. The girls never wavered in their
enthusiasm and support for each other keeping the
pressure on the opposition and extending our lead by
the final whistle despite Dandenong having 6 players on
the court for a while in the second half. The girls were
exhausted but very excited.
The girls bonded as friends and loved playing together
as a team. Hopefully they can all take these
experiences and new found confidence back to their
regular season. Thanks to all of the parents and
especially the girls for a fantastic weekend. Thanks also
to Ashleigh for agreeing to coach the girls over the
weekend and doing such a wonderful job.
U14 Boys Div 3 team – 3 rd
in the Dandenong
Carnival
Getting ready for our games in Melbourne our
coach (Greg) ran a beach training for us. We were
doing things like sprints, running in the water,
running up sand dunes and playing flags.
I was very happy when I saw a sign saying –
Melbourne 5km because the car trip was very
boring and also because I would not wait to play
our first game against Sherebrooke. We won it by a
fair bit but unfortunately for the team and Charlie
he rolled his ankle pretty badly and could not play
any other games for us.
Our game against Knox taught us not to give up
even when we are along way behind (13-0). We
kept trying and ended up winning by 6.
We won all three games on the first day. On Sunday
we played the other undefeated team
(Sandringham) and lost a close game. We ended
up winning 4 of our 5 games and came second in
our pool.
We played in the semifinal on Monday and lost
against another Knox team that went on to win the
grand final. We ended up coming third overall. Our
coach Greg was very proud of us.
I had a great time with my team and we have
learnt a lot that we can use in games for the rest of
the season. Greg thank you lots for coaching us in
Melbourne.
Jacob #12
Here are some comments from my team:
“I thought it was a great competition and we learnt lots from Greg. So much fun and
now we play better here. Krispy Cremes were great too!” Cooper #14
“What I liked best about the tournament was how challenging the teams were” Julius#5
“I really enjoyed going to Dandenong, it was great to play against Melbourne teams
and make it into the semi final. It was good to catch up with my team mates outside
the stadium as well” Jack #9
U16 Boys Div 2.1
Game 1. Melbourne 3.
An excellent team defensive effort and some desperate 2 nd
efforts on the boards and loose balls rewarded our boys with a
13 – 5 half time lead. In the second half Uche’ Dibiamaka
mesmerised the spectators with his penetrating drives to the
basket and finished tough contested shots in traffic to pave the
way to a lead that Melbourne could not catch. Consecutive 3
pointers from Damon Birbeck and ‘Big’ Ben Carter sealed the
deal in the last five minutes of play. Final Score 36 – 18.
Game 2. Frankston.
An inspired Brodie Clement took it to the Vics with some piercing
drives and classy finishing drawing fouls from the opposition.
Strong rebounding and excellent team defence were the
foundation of a 17-14 half time lead. With 4 minutes remaining
and the scores too close for comfort Damon Birbeck nailed a
clutch 3 pointer and backed it up with an inspirational charge.
Strong boxing out and rebounding by Ben Carter in the dying
minutes inspired the boys on the bench to jump to their feet and
cheer those on the court home. Final Score 32-30.
Game 3, Casey.
The Cavaliers jumped out of the blocks like they had been
drinking red cordial all afternoon and a 12 point lead blew out
very quickly for the home team. But an Uche’ Dibiamaka 3
pointer, tough team defence and some fancy footwork through
the key by Alex Mudronja meant the half finished with an 11-18
score line. Unfortunately the boys poor shooting percentage
deep into the second half coupled with too many costly
turnovers saw them have to literally scrap and claw their way
back into the game. Final Score 32-38.
PAGE 7
DANDENONG / ELTHAM TOURNAMENT
Game 4 Western Port.
Up tempo defence and tough moves to the basket
consolidated a 2 point lead in the first half. The second half
belonged to the ‘Big Men’ on the floor. ‘New Kid on The
Block’, Callum Coleman-Jones was rewarded for strong
inside position, good voice and great targets finishing his
shots like a veteran. Solid contributions by Ben Carter and
Harrison Buck helped to build a handy 12 point lead. With 3
and a half minutes left in the game an inspirational block
by Harrison Buck had Western Ports big man second
guessing his shots. Final Score 39-31.
Game 5 Knox.
An athletic Knox matched our boys up and down the court
however a D’Arcy Mitchell 3 pointer fired the team up
early. Another 3 pointer by Harry Reemst and strong
rebounding by Callum Coleman-Jones kept the
momentum going in the first half. Great conversion by
Brodie Clement from the foul line and a steal, fast break
and tough basket by Harrison Buck with less than a minute
to go gave Sturt a handy 17-14 lead at half time. Knox
upped their defensive effort in the second half and
coupled with some tired offensive passing by Sturt, Knox
were able to intercept and pile on unanswered baskets.
Final Score 21-35.
Semi Final Knox.
A rematch with Knox after four teams finished on an even
win/loss record, there was great defensive pressure and
offensive rebounding kept scoring options alive in the first
half but poor shooting did not result in any scoreboard
pressure. The second half started with Sturt doing all the
right things in offence and defence but failed to capitalise
on the score board. Intercepted passes and uncontested
layups was a repeat of the previous game. Final Score 23-
40.
With 7 of the 9 players competing in the Southern Cross
Challenge the weekend before the carnival there was an
air of confidence amongst the playing group from game 1.
Callum Coleman-Jones showed his potential in his first
interstate carnival and will take many positive things away
from a more physical style of play he encountered. The
belief in the group has stepped up to another level and
with continued focus on a team game there is great things
that this group can achieve.
Pink is for boys and balls...
U12B Boys!
The summer season began with Reilly (U12B Team 3)
bringing a brand new leather Molten pink ball to training.
At first Coach Ian wasn't keen on the alternative colour
and asked that Reilly not bring the pink ball again.
Sturt U14 Girls up to the Challenge
But for every drill that training the pink ball was the chosen
ball. As trainings went on and the ball kept reappearing,
Ian warmed to the pink ball.
One Saturday morning in an away game the boys put
forward the pink ball as the match ball. Alas the court
supervisor refused. Keh?! It is a round leather regulation
ball.
Not to be put off, the boys put the pink ball forward the
following week in a home game at Pasadena and the
pink ball was given its moment of glory and our
undefeated match streak continued...
Long live the pink ball and all that pink represents for
charities in our community.
Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup
Every year players from the age groups of U14s through to U18s are
selected to represent South Australia Country for the annual
Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup which is held in Albury
NSW in January. The Cup consists of representative teams coming
from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, New
Zealand, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Oceania; made
up of players from Fiji and surrounding islands.
Four girls from Sturt were selected to represent SA Country for 2013.
For the first time Shankia-Anne Barr from Sturts U14 Div 1 was
selected to represent SA Country in the U14G Sharks.
Jenna Tolley (Sturt U18G) who has attended the Cup from the
beginning in U14s was again selected for her final year as an U18
to represent SA Country. Ashton Langford was selected for the 3rd
time for SA Country U16G Sharks, and has just moved to Sturt
playing in U16G Div 1. Morgan Tolley (Sturt U12G assistant coach)
who has attended the cup for the past 7 years as a player, team
manager and coach, was again selected as assistant coach for
the U14G Sharks, having come off a very successful 2012 Country
Cup.
For Shanika and Morgan, the U14's got off to a great start
defeating a very small Tasmania Tigers by 39. They continued their
confident team play beating New Zealand Koru in a nail bitter by
4 and highlight of the match was Shanika's half time buzzer shot.
WA became a comfortable 41 point win in the afternoon. The
Sharks stormed over NSW Kookaburras by 42, and defeated
Victoria Bushrangers by the same margin. Finishing top of the pool
they crossed over in the first final against NSW Waratahs, easily
accounting for them by 32 points. The semi final was against
Victoria Goldminers, and with ruthless defence the girls earnt the
right to play for gold, winning by 25.
The Shark's opponent for the gold medal match was New Zealand
Kea who had won all their matches in the minor rounds quite
comfortably but had only narrowly defeated the other SA team in
the semi by 3 points. All the New Zealanders turned up for the first
grand final of the morning, and the girls were treated to the Haka
performed by all the New Zealand boys prior to the match. It was
a tough game with the lead changing hands at every stage, but
unfortunately New Zealand Kea proved too big and physical and
ended up victors by 4 points. It was by far the loudest grand final
of the day and the closest of margins. That meant back to back
silver medals for Morgan, and silver for a fantastic team of SA
Country Sharks.
Ashton played her final match in the U16 age group against
the NSW Kookaburras for 5th position and managed to pull off the
win by 3 points.
Over the course of the week in the U18s, Jenna played Victoria
twice, having a narrow 7 point loss to one side, and a steep
learning curve with the other Vic side. They managed to beat
Tasmania Tigers by 8, and NSW Explorers in a thrilling match by 3 in
the next games. The following game they beat NZ Kea by 18, but
were out down by NSW Waratahs by 12. The first final was a cross
over against a much bigger NSW Kookaburras, who ultimately
took victory by 31. Their final match was against Victoria once
more, who claimed victory by 19, leaving the Sharks in 8th place
overall.
The week in Albury is always one filled with highs and lows, but all
participants from players to coaches and even umpires come
away having learnt something and improved their basketball.
Good Injury Management Can Get You Back
On Court Sooner
The start of the New Year is a great time to review the important aspects of good injury management. No matter the severity, how
you manage your injury in the first few days can make a significant difference in how well you recover. Hopefully you've all heard it
before but just to refresh, you should be applying the RICER principles, and avoiding HARMS when managing injuries in the first 2-3
days.
RICER
1. Rest - Relative rest of the injured part. Allows the bodies early healing processes to occur, and avoids further aggravation of
injured tissue.
2. Ice - Applied to the injured area 15 minutes every hour or two can help pain, reduce excessive swelling and inflammation.
3. Compression - Use of a bandage or tubigrip can help swelling and bruising.
4. Elevation - of the injured part, above your heart if possible. This is a great one to remember, particularly if you do not have
access to ice and compression.
5. Referral - Have your injury assessed early by a Sports Physio or Sports Doctor to guide your best management.
Avoiding HARMS
1. Heat
2. Alcohol
3. Running
4. Massage
5. Stretching
These can increase inflammation and swelling, create more scar tissue, and potentially delay your return to the court.
The early management of new injuries doesn't need to be complicated, and remembering these key points will help get you back
on court as soon as possible.
