In 1901 there was Federation; the official start of Australia as a nation. In 1915, in the early stages of WWI, there was the Gallipoli
campaign, which saw the emergence of our nation and our national identity. Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first
major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during WW1.
The Dardenelles campaign (or as we generally know it as the Gallipoli campaign) took place in a small area of Turkey. The
fighting was between the Allied forces (mainly British, Australian, New Zealand and French troops) against those of the Ottoman
Empire (Turkey) with some German support. Britain’s declaration of war against the Ottoman Empire resulted in a campaign beginning
in February 1915 and lasting until January 1916. The land battle was preceded by a series of naval battles to secure the
Dardanelles Strait. The land battle itself resulted in the deployment of Australian troops who landed at Gallipoli in a dawn raid on
25 April 1915. Coupled with a series of errors including landing in the wrong spot, the advance warning that the Turks had had,
and the inhospitable countryside they faced, the ANZACS faced a formidable task. The campaign, despite its hopeless start,
lasted 8 months for the ANZACS – time enough to see the harshness of winter and summer; but it was a disastrous defeat for
the Australians and Allied forces.
It is estimated that over 50000 men on the Allied side died of disease or were killed. On Anzac Day, we remember these courageous
people who chose to fight for their nation and beliefs.
Among our school community today are descendants of these brave, mostly young, unselfish people who went to war and were
prepared to die for the pursuit of a free world. On Anzac day, we remember those people. Ninety five years on, lest we forget
those soldiers of 1915 and those of wars before and after this time.
Lord, we pray for organizations that work towards peace in our world.
Help us to be peacemakers in our homes and at school. May we be quick to forgive others, slow to anger, and strong to avoid
revenge. Amen.
Edmund Rice Challenge on Thursday 22/4/10
Edmund Rice jumped out of the blocks early and had
the team under a lot of pressure from the start of the
match. If it wasn’t for some excellent saves from Jordan
Timpano, the match could have been over in the
first twenty minutes. Relentless pressure and our poor
organisation finally told with poor defending contributing
to the first goal by Edmund Rice. An excellent
turn by Nash Condran and good work along the left
by Bryce Mardon helped set up an excellent finish by
Thomas Gaudiosi to get the team back to what was
probably an undeserved draw at half time. Although
the team kept battling in the second half and probably
had the better chances, they couldn’t maintain possession
for long periods and Edmund Rice broke through
for a 2-1 victory to take back the Edmund Rice Challenge
Shield. Congratulations to both teams for providing
a very entertaining spectacle and also for Thomas
Gaudiosi for winning our Man of the Match award.
