Volunteering - St. Joseph’s Secondary School, TenaruA representation of the Holy Spirit community recently travelled to Solomon Islands asvolunteers to work on a project at St Joseph’s Catholic High School, Tenaru.St Joseph’s educates students from Form 1 to 7 (years 8 to 13). The school commenced in thelate 1940s as a boys school, becoming a co-educational in 1972.The school is one of only seven National Secondary Schools Students within Solomon Islandsproviding high school education to boys and girls. Students travel from all over the Solomons toboard at the school. The families of students are usually subsistence farmers from coastal andrural areas, who work and live off the land providing for their own needs and for the cost ofeducating there children; for all, this is an expense adding to the general hardships they face inthere day-to-day lives.Students study a standard academic curriculum as well as traditional culture and agriculture. The strong academic focus provides hope to eventually earn employment to support theirfamilies. Some fortunate students continue to study at university; most will eventually return totheir villages using their meager incomes to provide for their families living in subsistence. The school is administered by Marist and includes a staff of approximately 30 comprising localteachers, cooks and groundsmen. Resources are extremely limited; however, education isvalued highly. The Solomon Islanders are devout catholics; the experience of the school andthe wider community coming together for Sunday mass to celebrate was something toremember !Currently in the Solomons there is an unsettled political climate and an economic crisis madeworse by Government tensions and cultural differences. Farmers who once were able tosurvive by selling their produce are unable to do so because of a general shortage of income,so for a period of time, supplementary forms of financial assistance are required.St Joseph’s relies on the financial support of Government grants and school fees, and now, because of Government tensions, even more heavily on the support of the wider Marist familyand support form nations within the Asia-Pacific.Solomon Islands rates as one of the poorest nations in the world; the Holy Spirit community isinvestigating a range of options designed to support the Marists at St Joseph’s in achievingtheir goal of educating it’s students. When calls of support are made you are encouraged toassist us in helping to achieve our aims.Colin Moore (Parent)Stephen Walker (Parent)Jim Walker (Parent / Teacher)Anthony Walker (Student)

Ls – Got them? Gearing up to get them? It’s a fairly well known fact that young people are seriously over-represented inroad safety statistics. But a much lesser known fact is that Learner drivers are actually the safest driverson the road. It’s only when a novice driver ‘goes solo’ that their crash-risk skyrockets ... so much so that they are 20-30 times more likely to be involved in afatal or serious crash in the first 6 months on their Ps.To tackle this issue, keys2drive, the single largest national Learner driver safetyprogram ever undertaken in Australia has commenced. keys2drive will see 200,000lessons provided by specially trained, keys2drive accredited driving instructors forFREE.Developed by Australia’s motoring clubs and funded by the Federal Government, akeys2drive lesson brings together a professional driving instructor with the Learnerand their supervising driver – most often mum or dad. In doing so, everyone benefitsfrom a better understanding of how to work towards making sure the Learnerdriver becomes a safer P plate driver. If you already have your Ls or are planning to get them in the next 12 months, or ifyou are or will be supervising a Learner driver, you can find out more informationand register for a FREE keys2drive lesson at www.keys2drive.com.au
