Featured Resident: Harold Lyden
Harold was born in Santa Barbara, CA. His family
moved two years later to his mom’s family’s dairy
farm west of Longmont. After high school, Harold
went to work with his two uncles at their farm machinery
in Loveland, CO where he eventually met his wife.
At 18 years old he went into the service and ended up
in Tokyo a year and a half, as part of communications
with the US’s occupation of Japan. The thing Harold
found most interesting at that time was how far behind
Japan was in 1950. He recalls the Ford Model A fire
truck that went 15-20 mph to go put out a fire at their
base! He also remembers how they still thrashed
wheat by hand without machinery.
When Harold returned from Japan, he worked for
the Denver/Boulder Bus Co. (became RTD) for 11
years. He found he wanted something more promising
and got into the State Patrol where he worked his way
up for 12 years. When he patrolled Aurora at that time,
it was all little farms. Harold tells of how the “Hell’s
Angels” came to town, insisting the State Police could
never touch them. . . .Until they ended up in jail! Because
the group threatened the Governor Love’s family,
Harold was asked to help guard the mansion.
Eventually, when the Chief of the Legal Council was
stabbed in the restroom of the capitol, Harold was
asked to be in charge of the basement, 2 nd & 3 rd floor
of the capitol. That was his favorite position and he enjoyed
it for 8 years until his retirement.
Thank you, Harold, for your years of military and
civil service, as well as all those thankless jobs you do
now to make the lives of all of us better! You are truly
a great man to be celebrated and we are blessed to
have you here at Dayton Place!
Celebrate “Great Men” Month
Starting in July, Dayton will be adding a
theme to the calendar planning each
month. July kicks us off with Leonard E.
Barrett Jr. on the 5th with his incredible
abilities in acting and singing in the North
dining room. Our own Harold Lyda
brings his story to the newsletter while two
more great men, Jim Boyd from St. Louis
and Stuart Simon from CO, add their musical
talents to our entertainment. The
last Friday of July we’ll treat the men to a
“Tacos in a Bag” lunch in the North Activity
Room, (don’t worry, it’s delicious!) and
our last Happy Hour of the month finishes
us off with some “Great Men” Trivia.
Wellness at Dayton
To Residents, Families, and Morningstar Dayton Team
Members,
It has been a privilege to work with you over the past
three years and I will miss all of you deeply as I have
decided to take a position as the Wellness Director with
Morningstar Parker. I want to thank you for the relationships
we have built, the hard work we have put in
together, and the amazing environment we have all had
a part of creating over the past three years as we have
grown together. Although I will not be at Dayton, I am
still going to be a part of the Morningstar family.
Change can be difficult but is sometimes necessary
throughout an organization for the overall good of the
communities. I believe this is one of those occasions
that will help both the Dayton and Parker Communities
thrive. I will be starting my new position on July 1 st and
very much look forward to seeing you all in the future.
Sincerely,
Lynda M. Winters, LPN
A Decade of Ministry!
MorningStar Senior Living is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Our charge to enrich the lives of
seniors goes beyond business and into the realm of a calling that began in 2003 when Ken Jaeger purchased
the land for our first home, MorningStar of Littleton. On that raw earth, Ken and his wife, Shanna,
walked ten summers ago, praying over the future ministry of MorningStar.
Since then, MorningStar’s rich history has been illuminated by all who’ve become a part of our family. We
are honored by the trust extended to us by seniors and their families. Thank you for all the ways you contribute
to our success.
To commemorate our continuing covenant with seniors, we are hosting Open Houses at all of our Denver
communities the weekend of July 26 & 27.
Appearing as a special performer at each Western BBQ will be Doug Watson, celebrated Will Rogers impersonator.
Trained by the Chautauqua Association and employed by the Will Roger Memorial Museum,
Doug has given 15 years to delighting audiences with the philosophic wit of Will Rogers. Will, a descendent
of the Cherokee tribe, distinguished himself in the early 20th century as a cowboy humorist, political commentator
and all-round entertainer. Serving music, Western style, will be local performer, Dave
Schaper. Join us for this celebration of pure Americana.
Please join MorningStar Dayton Place in celebration of the 10 th Anniversary on July 27 from 4 to 7PM. It
will be an unforgettable outdoor celebration with fabulous food and entertainment.
Together, as we give thanks for the blessings of the past ten years, MorningStar Senior Living celebrates
those by whom we are inspired and for whom we love to serve. Our seniors.
This anniversary season also celebrates new additions to our family: the opening of an Information Center
at MorningStar at Jordan in Centennial (opening Spring 2014), the August Grand Opening of MorningStar at
Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs, and the October Grand Opening of MorningStar at Arcadia in Phoenix,
AZ. These three new communities will offer assisted living and memory care.
