RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
A PERSONAL HOLY OF HOLIES
The Jewish virtue of modesty has unfortunately been polluted by those who solely associate the concept with physical
appearance. We prefer to extol modest clothing rather than modest people.
Alan Morinis, a contemporary teacher of Jewish ethics, describes personal modesty as the ability of a person to have his/her
own "holy of holies." He is referring to the inner sanctum of the Jewish Temple, a place none dared to enter save the High
Priest.
It is a natural impulse to flaunt our bodies, our ideals, our wealth, and our gifts. The secret of modesty is to quietly carry a
holy place within us; a place that is private and reserved. Like the original Holy of Holies, it's from that place where we find
dignity and favor before God.
