Health Cologne

With a history that spans 2000
years, its Gothic cathedral
and Romanic churches, a location
directly on the Rhine, multifaceted
culture and museum scene, and a
diversity of events, Cologne not only
enjoys an international reputation as one
of the most popular tourist destinations
in Germany – it is also the Health Centre
of the West. Cologne has a vast array of facilities and expertise: from its research
infrastructure, technical education and training, and its superior healthcare services
through to its portfolio of specialized medical products and services that
focus on prevention, diagnostics and rehabilitation. Cologne has immense re-
sources in all areas related to healthcare services. The link between high-tech
medicine and tourist attractions, infrastructure and services for foreign patients
and guests alike, Cologne is ideal as a city for medical treatment, care and recovery.
HealthRegion CologneBonn e.V. was established in July 2009 by 50 key players
of the regional health care sector. The registered association, now containing
more than 100 members, has set its sights on two major targets: networking
healthcare expertise and professionals in Cologne and its neighbouring communities,
and marketing Cologne as a travel destination for healthcare. Cologne
Tourist Board and its partners that are highlighted in this brochure tend to the
preferences and needs of patients from every point on the globe.
We invite you to take a moment to review this summary pamphlet and acquaint
yourself with the range of tourist options that the city has in store – as well as
the bountiful medical expertise that Cologne can offer you. We look forward to
welcoming you!
COLOGNE: Rhine Metropolis at the
Heart of Europe
The oldest big city in Germany, Cologne
was founded 2,000 years ago by the Romans
as „Colonia“, and evidence of this
long history can still be seen in the city
today. „Holy Cologne“ is well known for
its impressive churches, first and foremost
the cathedral („Kölner Dom“). Millions
of visitors come every year to visit
the city‘s wide range of famous museums
and unique major events. Cologne
is the fourth largest city in Germany with
a population of a good million.
As one of Western Europe‘s major traffic
hubs, the central position on the river
Rhine still favours commerce and
industry in the international trade-fair
city. Kölnmesse exhibition centre holds
more than 50 international trade fairs
and exhibitions every year, attended by
more than 42,000 exhibiting companies
and 2.5 million visitors from about 200
countries. Particularly well-known trade
fairs include the photokina, Anuga, Orgatec,
ART COLOGNE, domotechnica
and imm (international furniture show).
High-speed trains such as the ICE, Thalys,
Eurostar and City Night Express call
at Cologne. Germanwings, Air Berlin,
Lufthansa and other carriers offer direct
flights from various European cities and
hubs. It only takes 55 minutes to Cologne
city centre by ICE train from Frankfurt
International Airport, or even only
35 minutes from Düsseldorf International
Airport, which are served by from all
over world by international carriers. And

Healthcare competence
in the heart of Europe
Cologne
Cologne is truly at the heart of Europe:
the high-speed Thalys train connects
Cologne with Brussels in just 2 hours,
Paris or London are only 4 hours away.
And the ICE 3 train brings passengers to
Amsterdam in just two hours and forty
minutes. Once in the Rhine Metropolis
itself, guests will find around 250 hotels
of all categories, from inexpensive family
businesses through to 5-star superior
luxury hotels, with altogether approx.
26,000 beds. Cologne boasts hotels
among others in the following international
chains: Marriott, Renaissance,
Hyatt, Hilton, Intercontinental, Barcelo,
Radisson SAS and Accor, together with
the German Maritim chain. Since 2008,
the Russian Azimut chain also runs a new
hotel in Cologne. The range is rounded
off by the exclusive superior class with
the Excelsior Hotel Ernst and Le Meridien
Dom Hotel. And those who want to
stay for longer will also find ideal accommodation,
for example in the serviced
apartments in the Dom Residenz, right
in the heart of the city. Cologne‘s landmark
is the all-dominating Gothic cathedral
with its characteristic towers. It is
Germany‘s Number One tourist attraction
with more than six million visitors
every year, and one of the most fascinating
buildings in the world. The impressive
cathedral holds the golden Shrine
of the Three Kings and many other precious
treasures, some in the cathedral itself,
others in the unique treasury below
the cathedral building. Then there‘s the
unique and similarly significant group of
twelve Romanic churches, each a jewel
of Mediaeval church architecture. To the
south of the cathedral towers, visitors
will find the picturesque Old Town with
its numerous pubs and breweries, the
Rhine garden with the shipping piers,
the Historic Town Hall, the Praetorium
(the Roman governor‘s palace), the Mikwah
(Jewish ritual bath) and the Gürzenich
(historical city festival hall).
Health Cologne 3

In addition to its historic architecture,
Cologne also has a modern face:
Rheinauhafen is a new quarter built on
the banks of the river Rhine not far from
the Old Town, with breathtaking crane
buildings and a wide range of catering
outlets and cultural activities.
On walking round the 750 year-old cathedral,
which was declared part of the
World Cultural Heritage in 1996, visitors
can reach many of Cologne‘s museums
on foot: renowned establishments, such
as the Ludwig Museum for Modern Art
with the largest Warhol collection outside
the USA, the Roman-Germanic Museum
with its archaeological collection,
or the architecturally impressive diocesan
museum „Kolumba“, which recently
took up residence in new, historically
significant surroundings. The Wallraf
Richartz Museum - Fondation Corboud,
the „mother“ of all the city‘s museums
between the Town Hall and Gürzenich,
shows paintings and sculptures from the
Middle Ages to modern times, together
with the Impressionists collection of the
Fondation Corboud.
Just a few steps further away, a peninsular
in Rheinauhafen is home to the
Imhoff Chocolate Museum, Cologne‘s
sweetest establishment of this type.
Among others, here visitors can enjoy
fresh chocolate from a unique choco-
4 Health Cologne
late fountain. Next door is the German
Sport and Olympic Museum, a handson
museum that invites visitors to get
actively involved. Cologne‘s Carnival
Museum is the largest of its kind in German-speaking
countries and another
highlight in the city‘s range of museums,
tracing the history of Cologne‘s carnival
tradition back to ancient times. Cologne
is rightly proud of its cultural landscape.
Musical highlights are provided all year
round in the architecturally impressive
Kölner Philharmonie, the Opera and the
Musical Dome. Classic events such as the
city tour festival „Expedition Colonia“
and the huge fireworks display „Cologne
Lights“ on 11 July 2009 always attract
hundreds and thousands of enthusia-
stic visitors. The LanxessArena with its
18,000 seats is Germany‘s largest indoor
arena. Since it was opened in 1998, the
elegant building has been an absolute
must for stars such as Luciano Pavarotti,
Elton John, Rod Stewart and many more
besides.
But it is not only cultural diversity which
brings visitors to Cologne from all over
the world: the city also has a reputation
as a shopping paradise. Cologne‘s shopping
miles, malls and galleries invite vi-
sitors to stroll and shop. All shopping
streets in the city centre are within easy
reach of each other on foot. Cologne‘s
Hohe Straße with 17,145 passers-by per
hour is one of Europe‘s most highly frequented
shopping streets: in 1967, this
was Germany‘s first pedestrian precinct.
Over a distance of nearly one kilometre,
it leaves no shopping desires unanswered:
fashion, shoes, jewellery, clocks and
watches, consumer electronics, books,
catering outlets . . . it joins onto another
pedestrian precinct Schildergasse just
around the corner, voted Germany‘s
„Number One Shopping Street“ in 2008.
This consists mainly of large fashion
and shoe stores, perfumery specialists
and lots of cafés. Right behind Schildergasse
is the large Neumarkt with the
Neumarkt Galerie, offering 65 shops on
three storeys in modern surroundings
with lots of glass and stainless steel.
Less than 10 minutes away, there‘s Mittelstraße,
what must be the city‘s most
exclusive boulevard with noble brands
for fashion, jewellery and home textiles.
The shopping paradise continues in the
surrounding streets Pfeilstrasse, Minoritenstraße,
Ehrenstraße and Breite Straße.
What‘s more, visitors from non-EU
countries can reclaim 19% VAT as a global
refund on leaving the country – that
makes a shopping tour in Cologne real
value for money by international comparison.

Cologne is the home of global brands:
4711, the world-famous Eau de Cologne,
is to be found here with its wonderful
shop and museum, together
with what is today the world‘s oldest
fragrance and Eau de Cologne factory
„Farina“, founded on 13 July 1709,
located at Cologne‘s Historic Town
Hall. In 2009, the factory celebrates its
300th anniversary. Both companies are
open to visitors and entice their guests
into the history and world of perfume.
Rimowa, probably the world‘s best
known manufacturer of top quality suitcases
and travel bags, is also at home
here in the city. Companies such as Ford
Europe, Toyota Europe, DAF Trucks,
Madaus Pharma, RWE Power, Deutz
Motors, Schütte and the REWE Group
are just a few other world businesses
with registered address in Cologne.
A romantic boat trip on the Rhine is an
absolute must for visitors to the city.
The largest and most modern fleet on
the Rhine and Mosel is run by KD – the
white fleet on the Rhine. The Köln-Düsseldorfer
Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG
is market leader when it comes to passenger
shipping on the Rhine; for more
than 180 years, the company has taken
its guests to the loveliest destinations
on the rivers Rhine, Main and Mosel. At
the same time, KD is Germany‘s oldest
stock corporation and the most experienced
river shipping company. Together
with the scheduled regular services from
Easter to the end of October, KD also offers
numerous romantic panorama trips
and musical events with dancing and
entertainment, particularly in Cologne
and Düsseldorf, as well as boat trips to
the romantic firework displays. And the
5-star ship Premicon Queen is Cologne‘s
contribution to luxury river cruises.
In addition to all this, the extremely
children- and family-friendly Rhine Metropolis
offers its visitors lots of recreation
and entertainment facilities: Cologne
Zoo with the internationally renowned
elephant park, the Green Belt and Flora
with the adjoining Botanical Gardens,
the Rhine Park with the popular Tanzbrunnen
fountain and the Rhine cable
car, as well as Claudius Therme, one of
Europe‘s loveliest thermal spas with its
wide range of sauna and wellness facilities.
Visitors seeking a bit more of the
action will enjoy Phantasialand in neighbouring
Brühl. This is one of Germany‘s
loveliest theme parks with attractions
for the whole family. Meanwhile, in ne-
arby Kerpen, the Michael Schumacher
Kart & Event Center offers sport, speed
and excitement. This is where the career
of the legendary Schumacher brothers
began. Weidenpesch horse race course
rounds off the many facilities. In addition,
sophisticated casinos can be found
not far from the city, for example in Aachen
and Bad Neuenahr.
Another world-famous attraction of the
city is its carnival, also known as the
„fifth season“, reaching its climax in the
„three mad days“. Every year, more than
a million people line the city‘s streets on
Shrove Monday for the triumphal procession
of the triumvirate: Prince, Farmer
and Virgin. The city is transformed into
one huge party, with the tolerant cosmopolitan
Cologners and their guests
from all over the world celebrating, dancing,
drinking and laughing together.
The brewhouses, pubs and restaurants
are packed to capacity and so the party
moves out into the streets and the city
squares, with fun and a great atmosphere
guaranteed until the early hours. Cologne
Carnival, the second largest in the
world after Rio de Janeiro and the largest
in Europe, takes place in March 2011.
Health Cologne 5

All in all, Cologne is a city rich in events
and experiences. In summer 2005, the
Pope invited the youth of the world to
Cologne for the XX. World Youth Day.
More than one million young people
from all over the world came to celebrate
and share their faith together. In
2006, Cologne was one of the venues of
the FIFA Football World Cup 2006 with
fixtures including the Ukraine versus
Switzerland. More than 5,000 fans from
Brazil alone stayed in Cologne, together
with others from the UK, Sweden, the
Czech Republic, the Ukraine and Mexico,
all contributing to a colourful fan festival
in the city. In 2007, Cologne was once
again home to another major religious
event, this time the German Protestant
Kirchentag. In 2008, guests and gamers
from all over the world attended the
World Cyber Games in Cologne, and in
2010 the Ice Hockey World Championships
will be held here in the city.
Visitors to Cologne will also find a wealth
of culinary delights. Cologne has a lot to
offer, from numerous original German
brewhouses in the Old Town with the
local bier speciality „Kölsch“, the famous
„Halven Hahn“ (cheese roll) and the waiters
known as „Köbes“, to a wide range
of international cuisine, from Italian to
Persian and Arabian to Japanese.
Haute Cuisine is also to be found in the
Cologne region, with gourmet chef Dieter
Müller with his 3 stars in Schlosshotel
Lerbach and Joachim Wissler and his
own 3 stars in Grandhotel Bensberg, or
the Excelsior Hotel Ernst with its award-
winning TAKU restaurant; then again
there‘s chef Eric Menchon in the French
restaurant Le Moissonier which has 2
stars, or the „Zur Tant“ restaurant run
6 Health Cologne
by the Austrian Franz Hütter: Cologne
has a broad culinary range on offer, with
something for everyone.
Cologne‘s nightlife is legendary and
enjoys great popularity. The Cologners
and their visitors just love to party, and
all the revellers here in the city are sure
to get their money‘s worth, whether in
the city‘s typical corner pubs in the residential
areas, in the restaurants and
bars of the Old Town in the shadow of
the cathedral, on the old ring roads, in
Friesenstraße with its smart clubs, in the
trendy Belgian quarter, in the numerous
jazz clubs or in the many large discos.
In December, Cologne offers its visitors a
grand total of seven romantic Christmas
Markets in the city centre. Each has its
own special atmosphere and its own programme.
There‘s a Christmas market directly
around the cathedral, a mediaeval
Christmas market at the Chocolate Museum
and even a Christmas market on a
Rhine ship down on the river bank in the
Old Town. The trade press has declared
the Christmas market around Cologne
cathedral to be the loveliest in Europe.
160 lovingly decorated stands offer discerning
seasonal art and crafts, together
with regional and typical local products
from Cologne itself.
But the other Christmas markets also
entice shoppers to come and take a look,
and of course enjoy the roast almonds,
mulled wine and other delicious specialities,
including the “Angels’ Market“ on
Neumarkt, the Old Town, which is where
the „little people“ live, the fairy tale
Christmas market on Rudolfplatz or the
Christmas market in the Stadtgarten.
And the various seasonal events going
on at the same time such as concerts,
exhibitions and winter boat trips on the
Rhine turn advent in Cologne into a unique
experience all of its own.
No matter whether guests come to Cologne
to shop or go out, to attend one
of the countless events or the Christmas
markets, as private individuals or on
business, they always come to one conclusion:
the people of the city love to celebrate
and have fun not only during the
famous carnival. Their cheerful, uncomplicated
life style infects people from all
over the world the whole year round. And
so it is no empty claim when travelogues
repeatedly state that „Cologne cannot
be described. Cologne is a feeling“.

slipped disks, infections of the joints,
malignant growths on the muscles, ligaments,
joints or bones; osteoporosis,
torn muscles and tendons and many
other illnesses of the musculoskeletal sy-
stem. Treatment possibilities according
to the current guidelines include for example
surgery, punctures and injections
actually in the joints. Conditions can also
be treated with medication.
The Medical City Cologne has very close
connections to sport medicine through
the German Sport University. It offers
health, fitness and performance checks
according to sports medicine principles,
together with exercise therapy programmes
for already existing conditions
(high blood pressure, obesity, breast
cancer, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular
diseases) as well as exercise therapy,
modern coordination training, fitness
training and individual training plans.
Centre for Prevention and Anti Aging
The prevention work consists of courses
and instructions for leading a healthy life.
This includes for example workshops on
health training, balanced diet and illness
prevention, and practical information for
sustainable weight loss.
Anti aging is a practised scientific discipline
with the aim of delaying, stopping
or even reversing premature aging processes.
In detail, anti aging entails the
detection of health risks that could lead
to the development of heart attacks,
strokes, osteoporosis, dementia, cancer
and corresponding specific prevention.
Another objective is to generate and
sustain optimum physical and mental
capability.
Oncology Centre
The Oncology Centre treats all types of
tumour. The range of services includes
interdisciplinary tumour clinics and tumour
boards, psycho-oncological and
palliative care, together with interdisciplinary
oncology project groups, offering
every tumour patient individual care
on an interdisciplinary level. Modern tumour
therapy encompasses a wide range
of possibilities: metastasis surgery,
immune therapy with trifunctional antibodies,
individual chemotherapy, stem
cell therapy and regenerative therapy,
enzyme therapy, cannabis therapy, psycho-oncology
and also complementary
medicine. For eight years now, the combination
of dendritic cell inoculations
and hyperthermia has been successfully
used and further developed way beyond
Germany‘s borders. The modern
approach follows an innovative method
of treating tumours which hitherto was
only practised at a few hospitals worldwide.
Rehabilitation Centre
Rehabilitation in medicine refers to the
use of therapeutic procedures aiming to
minimize or eliminate the restrictions facing
a patient after illness, an accident,
surgery or in the case of degenerative
processes so that he can be restored
once again to a full life and return to
his working occupation. A therapy programme
is drawn up for the individual
patient in close cooperation between
doctors and therapists, placing a focus
on a holistic view of the patient. During
Health Cologne 9

the rehabilitation period, the patient is
offered various forms of therapy based
on interdisciplinary treatment concepts,
taken from the following areas:
Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy,
Speech Therapy and Psychology
Physiotherapy applies various therapy
forms to restore physiological processes,
correct incorrect posture and compensate
for muscular strength imbalances.
Physiotherapy is used in particular in the
following medical disciplines: orthopaedics,
sport medicine, neurology/neurosurgery,
urology, cardiology, surgery
and internal medicine.
The approach taken by occupational therapy
is to restore lost skills and to improve
or compensate for deficits by relearning.
The main aims of occupational therapy
are to give the patient the greatest
possible independence and to improve
the individual quality of life. Occupational
therapy is used in orthopaedics,
traumatology, rheumatology and hand
therapy to treat people with disorders of
the musculoskeletal system, and in neurology/neurosurgery
when dealing with
illnesses of the central nervous system.
Speech therapy is a young discipline of
medical therapy focusing on people with
restricted interpersonal communication
abilities due to impediments of language,
speech, swallowing or hearing.
Speech therapy is an indispensable element
in treating patients with brain diseases,
such as strokes, for examples.
Psychologists are involved when it comes
to analysing and treating changes
in personality and perception due to
illness; they also help patients and their
families to cope with the emotional and
psychological side of being ill. The Rehabilitation
Centre offers special facilities
and specialist doctors of international
repute, particularly in the field of neurological
rehabilitation.
Dental Centre
The Dental Centre offers the following
specialized areas: functional analysis,
implantology, 3D Diagnosis Centre (for
10 Health Cologne
computerized implant planning, among
others); oral surgery; paradontology,
minimally invasive aesthetic paradontal
surgery; endodontia; dentures, aesthetic
dentistry, CMD temporomandibular
joint therapy, in cooperation with
physiotherapists; snoring phenomena,
tinnitus treatment, Prophylaxis Centre;
bleaching; paediatric dental medicine,
orthodontics, also for adults; holistic
dental medicine, including homeopathy,
acupuncture and treatment under a full
anaesthetic.
Eye Center
Visual impulses account for 80% of how
we perceive our surroundings. The eye
is therefore our most important sense
organ. The eye center Cologne treats cataract,
one of the most common eye diseases
in the world and the main reason
for vision impairment in older eyes, Glaucoma,
one of the major causes of blindness,
corneal diseases and keratokonus,
macular degeneration, uveitis and all
other forms of eye diseases. In Cologne
you also find state of the art LASIK, a
proven and safe treat-ment of near-, farsightedness
as well as astigmatism and
even high tech implantable refractive
lens technology that can treat even the
highest refractive errors.
Service
We provide our foreign patients with
optimum advice and a high standard of
care to ensure the best possible return to
their normal life on returning home after
leaving the hospital. The doctors and
other staff can speak English and other
languages. Cologne Health Centre works
together closely with patient agencies
and support agencies who ensure that
the stay is as pleasant and interesting
as possible for the foreign patients and
their families. The support programme
can be chosen on an individual, modular
basis. It extends from hotel reservations,
transport, „meet and greet“ with
airport transfer, transport from the hotel
to the doctor and hospital, interpreter
service, excursions and organizing the
complete leisure programme for those
accompanying the patient. A competent,
multilingual team is available with
international experience in tourism and
outstanding knowledge of the city. The
range of support also profits from close
cooperation with other service providers
(hotel and catering, chauffeur services,
interpreters, fitness and wellness, etc.).
It goes without saying that patients
from abroad can also make full use of
all the services featured in the extensive
product catalogue of KölnTourismus
GmbH, the official tourism organization
of the City of Cologne.
Cologne – the Health Centre of the
YOUR TRUST IS OUR
TASK AND COMMITMENT
Since all patients are very different from each other, we adjust surgical techniques and implants very
precisely to the patient’s anatomy and also take his/her individual habits of life into account. Moreover,
we always bear in mind to keep the intervention as little as possible and as extensive as required.
Small cuts – great effect
Minimally invasive joint-saving
surgery, e.g. hip arthroscopy, may
be a treatment option for hip pain.
Minimally invasive surgery technology
is the gentle option as regards tissue,
especially muscles. This technology
allows quicker recovery of the joint
function and load capacity of arti cial
joint replacements.
Individual care
Hip joint replacement
Arti cial hip joints restoring the
individual anatomy more exactly
than before and thus achieving
better joint function.
Knee joint replacement
Modern arti cial knee joints allow
better knee exion and take the
differences arising from the individual
anatomy into account, e.g. the
difference between male and female
anatomy. With implants ranging from
the smallest to the largest possible
size, speci c care for knee injuries
is possible depending on the severity.
Foot pain
Defective positions of forefoot and
hindfoot need to be treated subtly
and technically differentiated. Arti -
cial replacement of the upper ankle
joint is a focal point especially
important to our foot surgery.
Active life through mobility
The doctors from the Cologne
Endoprosthesis Centre are highly
quali ed in the eld of special
orthopaedics and sports medicine.
Together with physiotherapists and
the care staff, they form a highly
you can lead an active life with as
little pain as possible again.
16 Health Cologne

The Cologne Model is an innovative approach to the treatment of cancer
and other chronic diseases (such as chronic viral illnesses like HIV, hepatitis
B and C). Both conventional treatment methods for these diseases
as well as new, science and research-driven approaches to treatment are
key elements in this therapy concept.
Medical Center Cologne (MCC) has applied the Cologne model since
2000. The basis of all therapies is the improvement of the immune system
(“immune restoration”), since the immune system is decisively involved
in all disease processes – both in acute and in chronic diseases.
For example, autologous dendritic cells and activated LAK cells, in conjunction
with hyperthermia applications, has been successfully used on
cancer patients.
To improve the immune system, another approach includes administering
vitamin and mistletoe-based compounds (Viscum album), trace elements
and enzymes. Patients also receive nutritional advice and assistance in
making changes in their everyday life (“lifestyle changes”).
A Dutch charitable foundation created portraits and bios of several patients
who, despite being in the end stage of their cancer, experienced
a complete remission over many years. These portraits are published
in many languages and can be found online (www.kanker-actueel.nl or
www.dendritic-cells.org).
Treatment is provided on an inpatient basis. Since your personal wellbeing
contributes significantly to the success of your therapy, we would
be happy to organize a full travel plan during your stay, in between treatment
periods and over the course of treatment. We work in collaboration
with our cooperation partner, GlobalGuest Germany GmbH & Co. KG.
Please feel free to contact us to determine if the Cologne Model can also
put you on the path to improving your quality of life.
Since 1999, the RehaNova-Cologne Medical Centre has been providing rehabilitative
treatment and care to patients suffering from all forms of neurological and neurosurgical
conditions, particularly those affecting the cranio-cerebral region. Our medical
they collaborate with the surrounding university medical centres. We specialise in
early rehabilitation, and also treat the most severe neurological, neurosurgical and
ward (14 beds) on standby for patients requiring seclusion; those who need restraint
are placed in a protected ward (14 beds) to receive rehabilitative services.
The RehaNova-Cologne Medical Centre houses over 132 inpatient beds divided
among 9 units. They are organised individually: A dedicated interdisciplinary team
of therapists and nurses is assigned to each unit. Our medical centre has a staff of
15 physicians from a variety of disciplines, 100 specially trained therapists and 150
highly qualified nurses and support staff. This decentralized organisational structure
makes each unit easily accessible for patients, and fosters the close personal relationships
that are crucial to optimal individualised patient care.
The Medical Centre can be conveniently accessed via public transit. We also provide
affordable hospital rooms to accommodate patients from abroad. If you would like
