All in all, Cologne is a city rich in events
and experiences. In summer 2005, the
Pope invited the youth of the world to
Cologne for the XX. World Youth Day.
More than one million young people
from all over the world came to celebrate
and share their faith together. In
2006, Cologne was one of the venues of
the FIFA Football World Cup 2006 with
fixtures including the Ukraine versus
Switzerland. More than 5,000 fans from
Brazil alone stayed in Cologne, together
with others from the UK, Sweden, the
Czech Republic, the Ukraine and Mexico,
all contributing to a colourful fan festival
in the city. In 2007, Cologne was once
again home to another major religious
event, this time the German Protestant
Kirchentag. In 2008, guests and gamers
from all over the world attended the
World Cyber Games in Cologne, and in
2010 the Ice Hockey World Championships
will be held here in the city.
Visitors to Cologne will also find a wealth
of culinary delights. Cologne has a lot to
offer, from numerous original German
brewhouses in the Old Town with the
local bier speciality „Kölsch“, the famous
„Halven Hahn“ (cheese roll) and the waiters
known as „Köbes“, to a wide range
of international cuisine, from Italian to
Persian and Arabian to Japanese.
Haute Cuisine is also to be found in the
Cologne region, with gourmet chef Dieter
Müller with his 3 stars in Schlosshotel
Lerbach and Joachim Wissler and his
own 3 stars in Grandhotel Bensberg, or
the Excelsior Hotel Ernst with its award-
winning TAKU restaurant; then again
there‘s chef Eric Menchon in the French
restaurant Le Moissonier which has 2
stars, or the „Zur Tant“ restaurant run
6 Health Cologne
by the Austrian Franz Hütter: Cologne
has a broad culinary range on offer, with
something for everyone.
Cologne‘s nightlife is legendary and
enjoys great popularity. The Cologners
and their visitors just love to party, and
all the revellers here in the city are sure
to get their money‘s worth, whether in
the city‘s typical corner pubs in the residential
areas, in the restaurants and
bars of the Old Town in the shadow of
the cathedral, on the old ring roads, in
Friesenstraße with its smart clubs, in the
trendy Belgian quarter, in the numerous
jazz clubs or in the many large discos.
In December, Cologne offers its visitors a
grand total of seven romantic Christmas
Markets in the city centre. Each has its
own special atmosphere and its own programme.
There‘s a Christmas market directly
around the cathedral, a mediaeval
Christmas market at the Chocolate Museum
and even a Christmas market on a
Rhine ship down on the river bank in the
Old Town. The trade press has declared
the Christmas market around Cologne
cathedral to be the loveliest in Europe.
160 lovingly decorated stands offer discerning
seasonal art and crafts, together
with regional and typical local products
from Cologne itself.
But the other Christmas markets also
entice shoppers to come and take a look,
and of course enjoy the roast almonds,
mulled wine and other delicious specialities,
including the “Angels’ Market“ on
Neumarkt, the Old Town, which is where
the „little people“ live, the fairy tale
Christmas market on Rudolfplatz or the
Christmas market in the Stadtgarten.
And the various seasonal events going
on at the same time such as concerts,
exhibitions and winter boat trips on the
Rhine turn advent in Cologne into a unique
experience all of its own.
No matter whether guests come to Cologne
to shop or go out, to attend one
of the countless events or the Christmas
markets, as private individuals or on
business, they always come to one conclusion:
the people of the city love to celebrate
and have fun not only during the
famous carnival. Their cheerful, uncomplicated
life style infects people from all
over the world the whole year round. And
so it is no empty claim when travelogues
repeatedly state that „Cologne cannot
be described. Cologne is a feeling“.
