city is its carnival, also known as the
„fifth season“, reaching its climax in the
„three mad days“. Every year, more than
a million people line the city‘s streets on
Shrove Monday for the triumphal procession
of the triumvirate: Prince, Farmer
and Virgin. The city is transformed into
one huge party, with the tolerant cosmopolitan

from all over the world celebrating, dancing,
drinking and laughing together.
The brewhouses, pubs and restaurants
are packed to capacity and so the party
moves out into the streets and the city
squares, with fun and a great atmosphere
guaranteed until the early hours. Cologne
Carnival, the second largest in the
world after Rio de Janeiro and the largest
in Europe, takes place in March 2011.
