Honor Societies<br />
Lambda Pi Eta National Honor Society in Communication<br />
Studies<br />
Communication Studies majors and minors are eligible to<br />
apply for membership to Lambda Pi Eta, the official communication<br />
studies honor society of the National Communication<br />
Association. The purpose of Lambda Pi Eta is to<br />
encourage and recognize scholastic achievement, stimulate<br />
interest in communication, promote professional development,<br />
exchange ideas about the field, foster close relationships<br />
among faculty and students, and explore options for<br />
graduate study. The criteria for Lambda Pi Eta membership<br />
are described in the Communication Studies section in the<br />
catalog.<br />
Phi Alpha Pi<br />
Phi Alpha Pi is the scholastic honor society of <strong>Gallaudet</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>. Seniors (with academic degree averages of 3.3<br />
or above and at least 3.0 for their freshman and sophomore<br />
years) are nominated for membership. Not more than 10<br />
percent of the senior class may be elected to membership.<br />
Juniors (one student in a class of 100 or fewer and not more<br />
than 1 percent of a larger class) may be elected if their<br />
academic records are clearly superior (a degree average of<br />
3.5 or more). Honorary members may also be elected from<br />
alumni, faculty, and staff. <strong>Gallaudet</strong> has a chapter of the<br />
national foreign language honor society, Phi Sigma Iota. To<br />
qualify for admission, students must have an overall degree<br />
grade average of “B” and an average of “B+” or higher in<br />
all foreign language courses. Students do not have to major<br />
in a foreign language but must have enrolled in at least two<br />
advanced courses using texts in the foreign language.<br />
Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology<br />
Psychology majors and minors are eligible to apply for<br />
membership to Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology.<br />
The purpose of Psi Chi is to encourage, stimulate,<br />
and maintain excellence in scholarship in all fields, particularly<br />
in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.<br />
The criteria for Psi Chi membership are described in the<br />
Psychology Department section in the catalog.<br />
