Hav<strong>in</strong>g empathy is about be<strong>in</strong>g able to identify with and understand others’ feel<strong>in</strong>gs and problems. While some<br />
people are naturally empathetic, others – often un<strong>in</strong>tentionally – may approach issues <strong>in</strong> a less sensitive and more<br />
bureaucratic manner.<br />
With an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly vocal citizenry, such an approach may have damag<strong>in</strong>g consequences, especially when deal<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with controversial issues that may arouse emotions. For example, to many political observers, Mitt Romney might<br />
very well have lost the presidency to Barack Obama <strong>in</strong> the last US presidential elections because voters felt that<br />
Obama empathised with their economic plight better than Romney did. Closer to home, some high-rank<strong>in</strong>g S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />
government figures have also been accused of lack<strong>in</strong>g empathy <strong>in</strong> well-publicized cases.<br />
Avoid these situations by learn<strong>in</strong>g how to project greater empathy through a more strategic use of words while<br />
communicat<strong>in</strong>g with members of the public <strong>in</strong> this programme.<br />
