ALTRUISM
unselfish concern for the welfare of others
How bright our world would be if every person
learned a new word every day. Place yourself before
the mise en scene of our Annual Report cover and
we hope you can feel the energy of a young mind
reciting a word for which only its meaning holds
more power than the moment itself.
At The Marietta Community Foundation (MCF) we
have the pleasure of meeting and working with
altruistic people daily. Being so close to this we’re
reminded again and again that the giving is the
reward. Give back, pay forward, chip in, do your
part…are all pretty tired catchphrases that have
become more of a turn off than a motivation. At
Marietta Community Foundation (MCF) we exist to
simplify the motivation to give…For good, forever.
So if it’s all for good and it’s that easy, why is the
dearth of gifts more telling than the need? It can’t
be about money, because on any given day, one
can give of their time, of their knowledge, prayers or
well wishes. It seems implausible that this wouldn’t be
a daily practice for everyone, but the demands and
needs of our society come at us in so many directions
that it’s sometimes easier to just turn it off. Remember,
it’s your choice, at your time, in whichever way feels
right to you.
At MCF we hope that today someone learns not just
the spelling of, but the meaning of A-L-T-R-U-I-S-M,
and that they pass it along to someone else. Forever
there will be another word to learn, and for good a
desideratum to overcome. If today is your day, we
can serve as the conduit to the reward.
noteS:
mise en scene (mee-zan* SEN) — a French word meaning
’The setting or background of an event’ was the word of
the day at www.wordsmith.org at the time of this writing,
so I couldn’t help myself.
Dearth — ‘An inadequate supply; scarcity; lack’ was the
word of the day at www.dictionary.com
Implausible — ‘not plausible; causing disbelief’ was
the word of the day at www.superkids.com which
appropriately has a word of the day vocabulary builder
for 4th to 6th grades.
Desideratum —‘something desired,’ came from the handy
Roget’s Thesaurus as a synonym for need.
VISION insight, foresight, inspiration, innovation
the Foundation’s Vision
By Mark Schwendeman, Chair
Foundation visionaries Sue
marsch and Bill thompson
many, if not all, of you knew Bill thompson, our beloved friend, and significant supporter
of the Marietta Community Foundation. Bill’s love for the City of Marietta and all of its
attributes were part of his being. He had a vision for our community that would make
Marietta the model for the essence of small town America. Bill’s career affiliation with
Marietta College and his involvement in our community gave him the unique perspective
to see what “can be” for Marietta. Bill had a “Vision.”
I had the good fortune of spending a great deal of time with Bill. We shared the same
vision. Marietta is truly a Gem and we have the opportunity to capitalize on all of its assets. We are so very fortunate
to have all of the assets that this community possesses. With the natural beauty of our rolling hills, two rivers, the good
fortune of having an interstate highway that touches our city’s border, a wonderful healthcare system, and two
excellent higher educational institutions, not to mention a lifestyle that many would only dream of, we are extremely
fortunate. Bill and I both agreed that we want to share that vision with not only our community, but with other people
that would enjoy what Marietta and our surrounding area have to offer.
The Foundation’s Board shares our vision. The Board believes that this vision for the future of Marietta is a fundamental
part of the Marietta Community Foundation’s mission going forward. As a Community Foundation, we have the
unique ability to act as a convener and a facilitator, bringing together groups and individuals to focus on the
common goal of making Marietta the model “small town America.”
It is hard to believe, however, through the generous support of many individuals and organizations our Community
Foundation has grown to over $10 million in assets and has granted in excess of $11 million collectively to hundreds of
organizations. This generosity truly indicates our community’s commitment to share in the future vision for our area.
While the Foundation will not lose sight of our current responsibilities to support individuals and organizations that
make such a difference in the lives of so many people, the Board truly believes we have the opportunity to create a
path forward that will have a lasting impact on the economic opportunities and quality of life for the citizens of our
area.
To make this all happen the Vision committee was created. Individuals representing several key organizations within
our Area convened and the Vision process began. The committee’s main goals are to raise the awareness of and
interest in Marietta, Ohio as the ideal small community to live and to raise a family, or to retire in a comfortable and
safe setting. Furthermore, Marietta and its surrounding area is an ideal place to locate a business, with excellent
resources and hard-working people to serve as the employees. We truly have all the ingredients; we just need to
communicate the message.
To achieve the Foundation’s goals funding was necessary…
In 2009, Sue Marsch, a longtime friend of Marietta, the Foundation and Bill
Thompson, passed away. Many years ago, Ms. Marsch created an unrestricted
fund in memory of her parents, the Karl D. and Anna Schultheis Marsch Fund,
and to continue her family’s legacy, left an unrestricted gift to the Marietta
Community Foundation. Those who knew Ms. Marsch, knew of her love for
Marietta. The Foundation’s Board decided it would be fitting to have her gift
support the work of Vision.
So here we are today. Our Vision is ongoing, with the committee working
diligently to develop the collateral to market our community. Videos, a Web
site, and marketing plans are being developed to promote our assets and to
attract potential citizens from outside of our area. We look forward to sharing
our Vision with you, and to gain your support in helping the Foundation to
achieve its mission. We want everyone to know the Gem that Marietta truly is!
FRIENDS OF THE FOUNDATION FUND
good intentions become great accomplishments
Starting with good intentions back in 1974, we
continue to make our donors’ good intentions
become great accomplishments.
We work closely with our fund holders matching their
desire to help, with the needs of the non-profits in our
community.
We work hard to be good stewards meeting rigorous
standards for accountability through respected,
objective evaluators including the national Council
on Foundation.
We gather information and track the many local
agencies and programs working for our community.
We act as a catalyst, bringing different groups
together to address local issues.
We build endowment funds that benefit the
community forever and help create personal
legacies.
We foster the development of new organizations
and programs, support high impact opportunities,
and re-direct funds as community needs change.
And we do all of this at no charge.
We are among the 1% of Community Foundations
across the country that do not charge fees.
It’s a daunting task, but a worthy one. It would be
easy to join the herd charging fees to help with
administrative costs, but we believe the no fee policy
is one of the nicer gifts we can give our donors.
We are able to do this because of the kind, unrestricted
gifts from Lillian Strecker Smith and others who realize
their support of the Community Foundation allows us
to continue to serve our community.
We started with $500,000, we now have more than
$12,000,000 in assets, and we have given more than
$11,000,000 in grants.
We’re here to make a difference in the lives of our
neighbors not only today but 25 years from now.
That’s the most important role we play. People give
to us so we can give back. And when all is said and
done, it’s that role that people will remember us most
by — How have we made a difference?
If you would like to support the Foundation’s work,
we ask that you give to our Friends of the Foundation
Fund. Your gifts will help the Foundation make our
community a better place.
