(009) Off the Top of My Head: Improvisational Exercises for
Creativity and Thinking on Your Feet
In the same way that traditional exercise can hone your body’s
muscles, there are exciting improvisational exercises that can
hone your brain’s ‘muscles.’ These fun-filled exercises will
increase your ability for problem-solving, brainstorming, quicker
decision-making, collaboration, handling risk, listening and
sharpening your focus. All participation in the improv games is
strictly voluntary—attendees can “play”—or simply sit back
and observe and learn. Either way, the skills you learn in this
session will be invaluable for your success at both work and at
home. It is a safe, judgment-free environment that just happens
to be the most fun you’ll ever have while you’re learning.
becoming clinically apparent weeks after surgery, are established during
and immediately after surgery. Many of the things we do in the routine
perianesthetic care of our patients have more of an effect on the risk for
Surgical Site Infections than surgical technique. A case can easily be
made that we are the first line of defense in the prevention of this most
common, serious complication of surgery and (arguably) anesthesia.
During this lecture, the perianesthetic clinical factors impacting the risks
for Surgical Site Infections as well as specific therapeutic recommendations
will be reviewed.
#401 Caring for an Autistic Patient in Your Perioperative
Complex
Pediatric patients with a disorder on the autism spectrum offer unique
challenges to the preop and postop nurse. Collaboration with the
families and the healthcare team is essential to a positive outcome.
Preop and postop care should identify developmental needs and a
strategic plan for the management of atypical behavior.
#601 Saving Lives Through Donation After Cardiac Death
This session will discuss the ever-changing world of organ and tissue
donation with a specific emphasis on the DCD (donation after cardiac
and continues to provide lifesaving organs for transplant. Donation
can also be a healing option for families and DCD allows more families
a chance to give the greatest gift- the gift of life.
#202 Controversies in Blood Product Transfusion
The transfusion of blood products is a routine element of perianesthesia
patient care. During the last 10 years, an evolving appreciation of risk
factors associated with blood product transfusions have resulted in a
change in clinical decision-making. Relevant considerations will be
reviewed during this lecture including transfusion thresholds, functional
limitations of blood products, transfusion-related complications and
the impact of blood products on morbidity/mortality.
#302 Care of the Orthopedic Trauma Patient in the PACU
Caring for the orthopedic trauma patient in the postanesthesia care
unit (PACU) is challenging. Key to understanding the advanced pathophysiology
of trauma injuries is identifying the unique anatomic and
physiologic changes that occur. In addition, presenting the mechanism
of injury and the critical information obtained at the scene reveals
essential healthcare data in assessing these patients. PACU nurses
should be prepared to recognize the life-threatening conditions that
may be taking place in the recovery of these vulnerable patients.
