CPAN ® and CAPA ® Certified Nurses Exceed 10,000<br />
With completion of the Spring <strong>2012</strong> examination cycle, <strong>ABPANC</strong> has certified 10,184<br />
perianesthesia nurses (6,250 CPANs, 3,934 CAPAs, 460 dually certified).<br />
This milestone achievement represents the growing value of certification in<br />
perianesthesia nursing.<br />
Our <strong>2012</strong> Advocacy Award Winner Is ...<br />
Connie Hardy Tabet, RN, CPAN ® , CAPA ® , a staff<br />
nurse and part time charge nurse in the PACU/<br />
Outpatient Surgery Unit of the University of New<br />
Mexico Hospital. Tabet regularly demonstrates<br />
a personal compassion and commitment to<br />
perianesthesia nursing and has gone above and<br />
beyond her normal job responsibilities to take<br />
initiative as a patient advocate. Read more about<br />
Connie’s story on page 4.<br />

Recertification-Related Information<br />
• The process for recertification is done completely online. Those individuals<br />
due to recertify must read the Recertification Handbook (available on<br />
<strong>ABPANC</strong>’s website) under the Recertification section. Instructions will be<br />
provided in the First Renewal Notice, sent to certificants in July (for the Fall<br />
Recertification Cycle) and January (for the Spring Recertification Cycle).<br />
• To access the online Recertification System, go to the <strong>ABPANC</strong> website and<br />
click on the link found on the Home Page, under the Recertification tab.<br />
• For convenience, certificants can log in and track their contact hours in the<br />
new Continual Learning Log, update their contact information, receive emails<br />
from <strong>ABPANC</strong>, and complete the recertification process.<br />
• New certificants can create a user account anytime by visiting the <strong>ABPANC</strong><br />
website and clicking the Create User Account link found on the Home Page<br />
under Recertification.<br />

section of the <strong>ABPANC</strong> website, answer<br />
many questions concerning the exams.<br />

We Need Certification Coaches and Item Writers<br />
Interested in becoming a Certification Coach? We have a new Lesson<br />
Plan (Study Guide) to assist you in leading a group of certification<br />
candidates as you help them prepare for exam. Coaching can be a very<br />
rewarding way to get involved with the <strong>ABPANC</strong> community and make a<br />
difference in your profession. Learn more about Coaching opportunities<br />
on the <strong>ABPANC</strong> website by clicking on "Get Involved," or contact<br />
Zelda Williams, <strong>ABPANC</strong> Program Assistant, for more details -<br />

Interested in becoming a Cyber Item Writer through our Remote Item<br />
Writer (RIW) system? Share your unique knowledge and experience<br />
in perianesthesia nursing to develop potential CPAN and CAPA<br />
certification exam questions. Learn how to write exam questions by<br />
attending an online webinar and receive all the information you need<br />
to write items from your home. Contact Vita Greco for more details –<br />

Earn Free Contact Hours<br />
Volunteer Coaches earn three contact hours a year for having coached<br />
at least one individual. Item Writers receive two contact hours for<br />
each submitted item, and can earn up to 60 contact hours in a 3-year<br />
recertification period to apply towards recertification.<br />
New Resources<br />
<strong>ABPANC</strong> is launching a new Lesson Plan (Study Guide) for nurses<br />
who would like to form a study group or who might need assistance<br />
developing their own study plan. This 12-week plan provides an outline<br />
and organization of information to be covered in approximately 4<br />
hours per week. Download the Lesson Plan from our website under<br />
Certification > Exam Preparation.<br />

<strong>2012</strong> Advocacy Award Winner (cont. from page 1)<br />
In this year’s nomination, Connie Hardy<br />
Tabet, RN, CPAN ® , CAPA ® , was recognized<br />
for using her power of innovative problem<br />
solving to help a patient who felt helpless<br />
and abandoned when her designated ride<br />
didn’t show up. Tabet arranged for a taxi<br />
to take her home and called the patient’s<br />
minister to arrange for a church member to<br />
meet the patient at her home. She obtained<br />
a voucher to pay for the taxi fare, made a trip<br />
to the offsite pharmacy to fill the patient’s<br />
prescriptions, and even shared her lunch<br />
with the patient.<br />
Linda Rogers, RN, CAPA, a colleague,<br />
nominated Tabet for the award and received<br />
a $100 cash award for her nomination. Tabet<br />
received a framed certificate, the Lladro<br />
Statue of a nurse, and a scholarship to<br />
cover her next recertification fee. <strong>ABPANC</strong><br />
awarded Tabet’s unit with a check for $350<br />
to be used for certification fees, continuing<br />
education fees, books or study guides.<br />
