TRI’s 10th year in business!<br />
As TRI enters its 10 th complete year in business,<br />
we find ourselves on more solid footing than ever.<br />
After a tough summer, business and economy<br />
wise (but perhaps the greatest summer in Seattle<br />
history weather-wise!) we are back at it hard, and<br />
as appears to be customary in the fall, business is<br />
picking up. More importantly, the personnel<br />
moves we have made allow us to handle our<br />
business more efficiently and effectively.<br />
TRI’s Rugby Connection<br />
As the Rugby World Cup gets under way in<br />
Australia (a fact not many Americans probably<br />
know about), it is appropriate to revisit a theme so<br />
predominant in TRI’s staff. TRI’s two founders,<br />
TR and Rowland Morgan, met while banging<br />
heads against each other on the rugby field. TR<br />
was fortunate enough to play for 17 years,<br />
including nine for the US National Team. He also<br />
participated in two Rugby World Cups for the<br />
Eagles. Rowland played at Cal-Berkeley<br />
(perennial collegiate National Champs) and for the<br />
local Seattle club, Old Puget Sound Beach RFC<br />
(OPSB). Sam King, our recently promoted VP of<br />
Sales (who is originally from New Zealand), met<br />
TR while playing for OPSB during TR’s brief<br />
coaching stint. TR asked Sam what he was doing<br />
for work, to which Sammy replied “I’d do<br />
anything to get out of the rain!” as he was sick of<br />
doing construction in Seattle weather. He started<br />
the next day in our operations department. Matt<br />
Leonard, another Kiwi, met us while playing for<br />
OPSB and is now working hard as our<br />
comptroller.<br />

Britts, pictured above, is fresh from the<br />
University of Washington where he was Captain<br />
of the rugby team. He is doing a great job<br />
supporting our sales staff and surely will be an<br />
outstanding salesman for us in the future.<br />

Gone Fishin’!<br />
In April of <strong>2003</strong>, the Midwest (John Godina) and Northeast<br />
(Rich McNamara) branches of TRI had their first annual fishing<br />
trip. They traveled to Key West, FL where they enjoyed beautiful<br />
weather and good fishing. They were<br />
accompanied by Ed Grover, Roy<br />
Wilson, and Richie McNamara, Rich’s<br />
son. They caught baracuda, jack<br />
cravale’, lane snapper, and mangrove<br />
snapper (plus a few hook-ups on larger<br />
fish that got away with a free snack).<br />
Richie McNamara topped the week with<br />
the largest fish - a 20+ pound jack<br />
cravale’, but everyone aboard brought<br />
“keeper” fish to the boat. Next years<br />
destination is yet to be decided, but Lake<br />
of the Woods, Ontario is atop the list of<br />
possibilities!<br />

Featured Product: Caustic Soda<br />
Caustic Soda is most commonly manufactured by the electrolysis of sodium chloride brine in either a mercury amalgam, membrane<br />
or diaphragm electrolytic cell. The co-products are chlorine and hydrogen. The largest users of caustic soda are the pulp and paper,<br />
detergent, and chemical industries. It is also used in the aluminum, oil and gas, and textile industries, mostly for its alkalinity value.<br />
TRI Caustic Soda Beads are uniform spherical particles of approx 0.6-0.8 mm. They are dust-free, easy flowing and easily dissolved<br />
in water, making them suitable for many applications. TRI supplies material in “TRI” bags. Packing is 50 lb bags, 500 and 551 lb<br />
steel and poly drums and 1000kg super-sacks. TRI is a major importer and has stock throughout the United States.

our local Intranet. For those of you who have<br />
spoken to her on the phone, you may find it hard<br />
to believe she is only 17 years old!!<br />

above is Brian in the midst of his test. Don’t mess<br />

CFO and comes to us from Gerry Sportswear prior<br />
to a two-year consulting stint in Seattle. He is a<br />
native of Chicago, where he met his wife of 11<br />
years, Tricia. We welcome Jeff, who has made<br />
significant progress in our accounting dept. Jeff<br />
replaces Lisa King, who did an outstanding job<br />
transitioning us from a failing accounting/logistics<br />
package to our current<br />
Navision system.<br />

Kristeen comes to us from Medisystems, <strong>Inc</strong>.,<br />
where she excelled as an Import Analyst. Kristeen<br />
has already proven to be very effective and patient<br />
in learning and working with the unique system<br />
we have at TRI.<br />
Congratulations to Shondra Garrigus, who has<br />
recently been promoted to Operations Manager.<br />

Antvelink, who were married in a<br />
beautiful ceremony in Michigan on<br />

Q4 Market Trends<br />
Autumn is finally upon us and thankfully summer is in the rearview mirror.<br />
After a slower than usual summer, we are starting to see an uptick in demand<br />
throughout the country and across industries. This is confirmed by the<br />
recently reported GDP for the third quarter at 7.2%, even though the<br />
chemical industry as a whole does not yet reflect such a large increase in<br />
volume.<br />
Producers attempted to push through Oct. 1 st price increases despite the lack<br />
of strong demand. A combination of the weak U.S. dollar discouraging<br />
imports, the seasonal increase in demand, and very low production rates at<br />
many manufacturers all gave many producers the hope that they could get in<br />
front of the price curve. We are now beginning to see numbers rolling back<br />
to previous prices, though the prices that are holding are not meeting the full<br />
requested increases.<br />
Ascorbic Acid is beginning to repeat the upward movement that occurred 12<br />
months ago. In the last two weeks we have seen prices go from<br />
approximately $4.00/kg to $7.00/kg plus. It will be very interesting to<br />
follow further price fluctuations in the next few months. TRI is constantly<br />
involved in the Ascorbic business, so please do not hesitate to contact us.<br />
The Glycerine market is also in flux at this time. Imported drum prices have<br />
been falling steadily for the past year, but pricing seems to have hit the<br />
bottom and is now holding steady. If China enters the buying market again,<br />
we may see incremental prices rise. Domestic USP tallow pricing has<br />
dropped as well, but not at the same rate as imported material. TRI is a good<br />
source for all grades and packaging of Glycerine.<br />
Caustic Soda beads have dropped in price during the 3 rd quarter, but business<br />
seems to be holding firm now with an increase in demand in the last two<br />
months. TRI currently has stock near you.<br />
Glycol Ether prices have rolled back. TRI has both bulk material and drum<br />
stock. The more advanced items have been able to hold the price increase,<br />
but workhorse items like DB & EB have had a difficult time moving up.<br />
Overall, business is improving. Margins are still under attack and there is a<br />
lot of competition for each order, but it looks like better days are ahead.
