And this is now the message PFW is
trying to get across to other businesses, as
details are finalised for its latest innovative
venture – South London’s first Freight
Consolidation Centre.
Working in partnership with the South
London Freight Quality Partnership (SLFQP),
Transport for London and Croydon Council,
PFW has been creating a pioneering freight
consolidation strategy to relieve the roads of
traffic and pollution.

Currently large trucks are filling up
London’s streets, sometimes delivering
only one or two items. This consolidation
centre would allow items to be dropped off,
collected and used to fill a smaller vehicle,
which would then distribute the items
around London.
“It’s something that we’ve been looking at
for a long time,” says Junior, who believes
that it’s perfect for the direction the
company is going in environmentally.

reduce the number of vehicles on the
road, PFW is looking at ways to further its
environmental benefits through the use of
electric, gas and hybrid vehicles as well as
the use of the railways.
The partnership is currently looking into
European funding for initial set up costs,
explains Junior. And the cost for business
has yet to be finalised but as he says,
“we’ve got to be realistic, if it’s a massive
cost to anyone it’s going to be a non-runner
no matter what the benefits.”
This project could see PFW revolutionising
the delivery industry for good. Freight
consolidation is a relatively new concept
for the UK. It is currently mandatory
at Heathrow airport, for security
reasons, and the system is also
being piloted at Bristol’s
Broadmead shopping centre
with considerable success.
If this trial goes
ahead, it could be

implemented not only in Croydon, but also
Bromley, Lewisham, Wandsworth, Sutton,
Kingston and Richmond. And then further
out and around the country.
It might seem like a major project, but for
PFW innovation is just part of the job. In
fact, it is also working on another project
with the brewers Wells & Youngs. And with
the likes of other well-known brands on its
books – IKEA, B&Q, Lombok and Canon
– PFW looks set to continue developing
and innovating.
