The East Side Voice
Volume 12, Issue 3 March 2011
March 2011
March 9 th is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Season of Lent. Lent serves as a rehearsal for the selfdenying
Christian life. Lent is the 40 day (not counting Sundays) period leading to Easter; it is long by design,
as long as Jesus’ trial in the wilderness following his baptism during which he was tempted by the Devil.
Lent is not supposed to be a fun time! Themes center on repentance and humility, beginning on Ash
Wednesday when each of us will very personally hear the words: “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall
return.” Since ancient times, Christians have marked the Lenten season with acts of self-denial. Fasting, prayer,
and almsgiving create opportunities to ponder one’s need for a Savior, to practice generosity, and to cultivate
gratitude.
Lent is a structured time for us to look at ourselves, to focus on our personal sin and our corporate sin and to
dwell on them long enough so that we long for God’s grace. In short, Lent is the time for us to ponder why we
need a Savior. It is a time for us to reinforce core values of our faith.
This Lent we will be having a Teaching Series on Christian Paradoxes. A paradox is something that seems to
be absurd or contradictory but in fact is true. The topics are familiar … yet they are paradoxes. Each week we
will explore them and their meaning for our lives.
Kevin Gleason, with Thrivent Financial, and Sergeant Harrison, Sioux Falls Police Department,
will lead a seminar on Identity Theft: What You Need to Know
During this educational workshop, participants will learn
♦
♦ How identity theft can occur
♦ Tips to protect themselves
Steps to take if identity theft happens to them
The one-hour seminar will be offered on Sunday, March 6 th at 9:30 am and 11:00 am.
Please pre-register (call 336-3597 or e-mail: office@eastsidelc.org) so enough material will
be on hand for all participants. There is no charge for the seminar.
Bob Heyl was recognized as Avera’s Volunteer of the Month!
Bob Heyl is a generous and compassionate volunteer who is sensitive to each
person’s individual needs. In his volunteer role as an Avera Surgery Center Guide,
Bob’s sense of humor and warm hospitality puts people at ease when coming to Avera McKennan.
Prairie Center Welcome Desk and Patient Escort, Bob needs to be aware of each
person’s situation and adjust to their needs.
He has established close working relationships with retuning patients as well
as staff and fellow volunteers.
There doesn't seem to be a volunteer job that Bob doesn’t like. When a new volunteer opportunity becomes available,
he is interested in expanding his horizons and offering his help to establish the new volunteer area.
“I can do that” is the response when asked to complete a task, try something new or volunteer additional days.
He is a welcoming presence to everyone he meets.
