God's work in mission always propels us to encounter the neighbor, particularly in
the stranger. ELCA Glocal Mission Gatherings equip us for God's work in today's
global and local realities as well as their "glocal" intersections.
What is mission? Who is the neighbor? Let's consider these questions together as
they relate to our migrating and immigrating world. Come, join some of the most
relevant mission conversations of our time.
"Then the Lord said to Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' He said, 'I do not know; am
I my brother's keeper?'" -Genesis 4:9
We are pleased to work with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, synods and
the local planning team to present this event. This event brought to you in part by a
generous grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation.
CELEBRATING FAMILIES
The 11 th annual Celebrating Families will be held at the
Multi-Cultural Center on Saturday, August 11, from 10 am
– 1 pm. This event provides an opportunity for families,
especially those in need of services. Last year 32 vendors
were represented. Several of the vendors provided
screenings and activities for youth. Screenings included
height/weight/blood pressure (Sanford), body fat
measurement (Avera), hearing (Noon Sertoma), Digital
fingerprinting (Colorado Tech),Youth activities included
National Guard Climbing Wall, Sioux Falls Fire Dept.
Smoke House, Mayor’s Youth Council Face Painting,
Highway Safety Roll-over Simulator, and a Balloon Artist.
During this event, families can gather valuable information
from vendors and enjoy a free lunch! Last year over 600
families attended. One feature of the event is providing
free packages of socks and underwear to the children and
youth who attend. Families can access various agencies in
the community for gently used clothing, but none of these
places provide socks and underwear. During the past 11
years, we have been able to provide either a package of
underwear or a package of socks, and every year we have
run out before we are able to do so.
This year we would like to be able to provide socks and/or
underwear to every child/youth who attends. This is where
East Side Lutheran comes in. Starting when you receive
this newsletter and continuing through July, we will be
collecting new packages of socks and underwear, sizes 2-16
(no infant, please). There will be a box in the office for the
collection. If you would prefer to donate money, the
Celebrating Families Committee would be happy to do
your shopping for you! Checks should be made out to
Dakota Drug and Alcohol Board (one of the sponsoring
agencies).
Thank you in advance for your generosity. This is a
wonderful opportunity for us to be “in the neighborhood”
and in the community “for good.”
Carla Middlen
Congregation President
THANK YOU
On behalf of the Council, I would like to say “THANK
YOU” to all who served as teachers, helpers, or assisted in
we do at East Side, and we could not be successful without
you. Thanks also to Jennie Hoefer and Pastor Carroll
Marohl for their dedication and hard work this past year.
We appreciate all of you!!
On April 28th, six of us attended the CROSSROADS SPRING CONFERENCE at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. It was a great
day filled with inspiration, Bible Study and entertainment by the HALLULUA HOLLIGANS. We donated 2 Prayer Shawls, that
will be distributed in the State wherever a Shawl is needed. The Crossroads’ delegates elected Beth Wilcox, (Beth is a member of
ESLC) to be President of the Crossroads conference.
Ten ESLC women attended the Spring Luncheon at St. John’s Lutheran. We were so impressed with the Soul Mates that we hope
to have them at ESLC for one of our programs. We may even “borrow” some of the other things that happened at the luncheon.
We sold approximately 130 tickets for the Mother/Daughter Banquet. It was an evening of good
food, good fellowship, fantastic devotions and a very interesting program. Again a few good men
were there to serve and clean-up the meal. Thank-you guys for a wonderful job and making our
evening very enjoyable. Thanks also to Pastor Karen for devotions and to Barbara Aspaas and her
granddaughter for the program of a very dynamic women.
The free will offering for Joy Ranch was held on May 13 th . A check for $ 107.00 will be sent to them.
Things have changed - - The planned kitchen cleaning was scheduled for June 4th and since that is the week of the pew installation
we will do that at a future date.
THE ALL WOMEN RETREAT has been rescheduled to September 15, 2012. With other activities on June 23 rd , we felt it was
needed to change the date. The Bible Study will be given by Pastor Carroll and be an overview of the year’s Bible Study Gathering
magazine.
NOW FYI...We are no longer collecting egg cartons - The Banquet put out the plea and got swamped.
June 15 th & 16t th is the Synodical Convention in Pierre.
June 23 rd is the Shetek Quilt Auction - - want to go? Call Pat Stensland.
June 22 nd & 23 rd is the Glocal—Glocal/Local Mission Gathering at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
An Excerpt from the Board’s April Meeting! “We will begin recognizing individuals in the Newsletter. We will start with Verlyn
Eckert to recognize her years of service”. This was to happened in the June Newsletter but Verlyn passed away May 8 th . The
recognition was read at the Mother Daughter Banquet in Verlyn’s honor and is below. We all miss this very special child of God.
East Side Lutheran WELCA Board of Directors decided to launch a
new feature in the VOICE - “WELCA Tribute”. Sadly, this
tribute is too late, but we want you to see Verlyn through our eyes.
We would like to have a small tribute to
Verlyn Verlyn Eckert
Eckert
Her funeral was May 11, 2012.
Only Jesus has more names that this little lady.
Kitchen angel, Coffee lady, Short lady, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-
Grandmother, Sister, Elizabeth Circle Chairman, Sunday School Teacher,
Church Fellowship Council, on the WELCA Board of Directors
and also greeter of all she met.
We give thanks to God for Verlyn Eckert. She was one of the important
people who helped make East Side Lutheran what we are today.
She served us all by her example, a faithful disciple of Jesus.
God Saw Her
God saw that she was getting tired And a cure was not to be
He put His arms around her And whispered “Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched her And saw her fade away.
Although we loved her dearly We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating A small frail hand at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
The
Million
Book
Project
The ELCA Youth Gathering is encouraging you to give a book this summer to children in New Orleans
as an in-kind offering! The average child in Louisiana is 2½ years behind grade level. Children often lose important
skills when they are not reading over the summer.
Literacy is directly linked to future earnings as an adult and is related to a person’s capacity to escape systemic poverty.
Go to http://www.gulfcoastsynod.org/books .html
Let’s leave a million books as a gift from our church this summer!
How to give books:
Get books to New Orleans in one of the following ways:
1. Donate using your credit card via the link above. Through our partnership with Scholastic Books, get more books
for your financial investment (4 books for every $15) and you don’t have to travel with books. Pass this link to all
your friends and family. Put it out on facebook and on your own webpage—let’s go viral with this! Pick up your
MBP sticker at the Gathering to wear so everyone knows you are part of the Million Book Project.
2. Bring books! Choose books from the list posted on the kiosk and bring to New Orleans when you come for the
ELCA Youth Gathering. Drop them off at the Convention Center when you register and pick up your sticker to wear
so everyone knows you are part of the Million Book Project. Please do not bring used books. It is important for us
to respect the list of books that are requested by the educatiors in Louisiana so sticking to this list is part of the MBP.
The cost of the books range from $2-$18 per book depending on your selection and if this is a paperback or
hardcover book.
3. Order on Amazon before June 10th. Use the book list on the kiosk to order books and have them shipped for you.
All orders must be placed before June 10th and be labeled and addressed to the designated warehouse, according to
the instructions found at www.gulfcoastsynod.org/books/html so that they get to the right places.
