Quilt Auction Fundraiser Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 11:15 am Shetek Lutheran Ministries Activity Center Quilt Preview Friday, June 22 7:00 - 9:00 pm Saturday, June 23 8:30 - 10:30 am Check out the 2012 Quilts and Quilt items on www.shetek.org. East Side Service Radio Broadcast for Each Sunday we broadcast our 9:30 am worship service over KSOO Radio (1140 AM). The service airs at 11:00 am and is available on our website by Monday afternoon. ♦ May 13 th broadcast was given by David & Nona Bixler and Alice Sylliaasen in memory of Guy Sylliaasen and the 55 th wedding anniversary he and Alice would have celebrated on May 10 th . ♦ June 24 th broadcast is in honor of Pearl Machmiller’s 90 th birthday. The last Wednesday morning of the month we have a very capable licensed Massage Therapist here in our library. Massage can help you relax, release tension and pain. Carol Ann has 15-minute time periods scheduled for $12. She supplies the special table and you are comfortably positioned with your clothes on for the massage and it feels so good! Aaron is transferring from Berea Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Tricia and son Ethan, born March 12, 2012, were baptized here at ESL on May 20th . Tricia also attended Pastor Lon’s new member class. Aaron is employed at Wells Fargo and Tricia at Snicklefritz Child Care center. They enjoy golf, reading and spending time outdoors. Paul Paul Paul Cunningham Cunningham 3509 N 6th Ave 57104. 605-212-1418, Paul was baptized at Messiah Lutheran Church on May 10, 1970 and attended Pastor Lon’s New Member Class. Jim and Pat are transferring from Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Jim is employed by the Sioux Falls School District as a truck driver and Pat is a secretary at Sprit of Peace UCC. They both previously worked for the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. They are the parents of three daughters and love to travel, garden and spend time with family. Lainee is 10 years old and is in the 5th Grade at Annie Sullivan Elementary. Alanna attended Pastor Lon’s New Member Class and she and Lainee were baptized at ESL on May 20th . Alanna is employed as a Customer Service Rep. for Citibank. They love camping, watching movies, roller skating and helping people in need. CELEBRATING FAMILIES The 11 th annual Celebrating Families will be held at the Multi-Cultural Center on Saturday, August 11, from 10 am – 1 pm. This event provides an opportunity for families, especially those in need of services. Last year 32 vendors were represented. Several of the vendors provided screenings and activities for youth. Screenings included height/weight/blood pressure (Sanford), body fat measurement (Avera), hearing (Noon Sertoma), Digital fingerprinting (Colorado Tech),Youth activities included National Guard Climbing Wall, Sioux Falls Fire Dept. Smoke House, Mayor’s Youth Council Face Painting, Highway Safety Roll-over Simulator, and a Balloon Artist. During this event, families can gather valuable information from vendors and enjoy a free lunch! Last year over 600 families attended. One feature of the event is providing free packages of socks and underwear to the children and youth who attend. Families can access various agencies in the community for gently used clothing, but none of these places provide socks and underwear. During the past 11 years, we have been able to provide either a package of underwear or a package of socks, and every year we have run out before we are able to do so. This year we would like to be able to provide socks and/or underwear to every child/youth who attends. This is where East Side Lutheran comes in. Starting when you receive this newsletter and continuing through July, we will be collecting new packages of socks and underwear, sizes 2-16 (no infant, please). There will be a box in the office for the collection. If you would prefer to donate money, the Celebrating Families Committee would be happy to do your shopping for you! Checks should be made out to Dakota Drug and Alcohol Board (one of the sponsoring agencies). Thank you in advance for your generosity. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to be “in the neighborhood” and in the community “for good.” Carla Middlen Congregation President THANK YOU On behalf of the Council, I would like to say “THANK YOU” to all who served as teachers, helpers, or assisted in any other way in our Sunday School Program this year. The Christian education of our youth is an important part of what we do at East Side, and we could not be successful without you. Thanks also to Jennie Hoefer and Pastor Carroll Marohl for their dedication and hard work this past year. We appreciate all of you!! Carla Middlen Congregation President East Side Lutheran Church Council Wednesday, May 16, 2012 Present: Jeff Armstrong, Jason Bormann, Lorri Halverson, Tom Hendricks, Jason Klein, Carla Middlen, Pastor Lon Kvanli and Pastor Olaf Roynesdal. Absent: Kim Vanderwerf and Wayne Wosje. An opening prayer was given by Pastor Olaf Roynesdal. Secretary’s Report: Motion was made by Jeff Armstrong, seconded by Jason Bormann to accept minutes from the March 11, 2012 meeting as distributed. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jason Klein reported we are about 5% ahead in income as compared to this time last year. The National Youth Gathering total is about $1,000 short of needed funds. Next Monday the parking lots will be re-done. Our reserve for loan purchase is about $30,000. Motion was made by Tom Hendricks, seconded by Jeff Armstrong to accept the report as given. Motion carried. Updates: ♦ A deposition date of June 28, 2012 has been set for Gigi Rieder and Pastor Roynesdal so the lawsuit is moving forward. ♦ The electrical power is in for the Verizon tower and we have received the $2,500.00 “signing bonus.” ♦ The web site task force has our belief statement almost ready to be put on the web site. ♦ Our new pews will arrive on June 4 th . On June 3 rd we will remove the old pews, clean and wax the floor, wash the windows, etc. Assembly will take place during the week with pews being ready to use on Sunday the 10 th and will be dedicated on Father’s Day. ♦ All the new equipment (smart boards) has been installed. In the narthex and fellowship hall we will installed TV screens for viewing announcements, pictures, etc. Business: ♦ The Endowment Committee is recommending Doug Gravning to complete the unexpired term of Vic Nield. A motion to do this was made by Jason Klein, seconded by Lorri Halverson. Motion carried. ♦ The after school program grant has been completely funded and it is anticipated that we will be ready by the fall. There is room for about 30 elementary school children in the program and our responsibility is to provide a clean facility. ♦ Our nursery coordinators (Ashley Prieto and Kim Dickey) are in place and it seems to be working well. Colleen Birkeland is being trained as a sub for when Gigi is out of the office. ♦ DeJane Zerhun (leader of the Ethiopian congregation) has applied for ordination candidacy with the ELCA and as a member of East Side we will pay about $400.00 for his sponsorship. ♦ A group will meet to discuss facility usage fees. ♦ Some statistics dealing with changes in religious adherence in the Sioux Falls metropolitan area were distributed. A draft survey was also distributed for members to review. ♦ A council retreat will be Friday, July 13, 2012 for 9-3 at Sioux Falls Seminary. Respectfully submitted, Linda J. Hoeck, Secretary
