YORK RITE CRUSADER
Fall, 2011
York Rite Crusader
To all Companion Knights,
What a great year this has
been!! We finished my first year
with the 54 th General Assembly held
in Nashville, Tennessee. All I can
say is - What an Assembly! We
welcomed over 400 Companion
Knights and ladies, had very good
accommodations, the food was
great, the entertainment and tours
were excellent, the meetings went
very well, and the fellowship was amazing. The Companion
Knights and their ladies of Tennessee have much to be proud
of. For those who were in attendance, you know what I am
saying. For those who could not join us, please try to attend a
General Assembly of the York Rite Sovereign College. It is
amazing to see the fellowship at our meetings. You will
always walk away with more friends.
The Order of the Purple Cross was conferred by a cast of
volunteers this year and what a job they did. Perfectly
performed! We will again be utilizing Distinguished Brethren
next year for this purpose.
Our 55 th General Assembly will be held in Toronto, Ontario
August 1-4, 2012. Information appears in this issue and will
also be in the Winter issue of the Crusader. As always,
complete Registration material will be in the Spring Issue.
From what I have heard, the 2012 General Assembly
promises to be one of our best. They have great tours and
entertainment planned for us.
I would like to thank all the Companion Knights and
ladies I have met on my travels for the courtesies extended to
me and my lady, Cindy. One in particular - on September 17,
2011, I had the honor and pleasure of attending the twentysixth
Annual Joint Assembly of the York Rite Sovereign
Colleges of New England and Eastern Canada. Held in
Meriden, Connecticut, and hosted by Connecticut College No.
17 and Grand Governor Paul L. Chello, it was attended by
over 75 Companion Knights from this area.
Most Worshipful James McWain, Grand Master of Masons
in Connecticut, was in attendance along with Grand
Governors and Deputy Grand Governors from most of the New
England states. The Order Knight of York was conferred in
excellent form by outstanding ritualists from throughout the
states involved.
During the twenty-six years of joint meetings, 3 have been
held in Canada.
I want to personally congratulate the Companion Knights
of this region for annually gathering the Colleges in these
states and provinces. It provides wonderful fellowship for all
who attend and elevates the Colleges in the eastern part of
both Countries to greater visibility. Next year’s event will be
Governor General’s Message
1
hosted by Profile College No. 100 to be held in Portsmouth,
New Hampshire on September 22, 2012.
I urge Colleges in other parts of these countries to have
similar joint assemblies. It is well worth the effort.
One thing I would like to remind our Grand Governors - it
is extremely important that you submit Visitation Reports after
your meetings with the Colleges. Also we would like to timely
receive your Annual Written Reports at the year’s end. In
reviewing this year’s Reports for the Grand Governor’s
Visitations and their written reports, which will be printed in
the Proceedings, we find that improvement has been made.
But there is always room for more improvement. Information
we have gleaned from these reports tells us we have some
work to do with the proficiency in our work. Leadership needs
to be better developed. We need to commit to our stated
Purposes and carry them through, and there seems to be a
want for Education.
In the past we have had one committee work with
colleges that are showing signs of trouble. Last year we
included another committee to help and this seems to be
working. Grand Governors are pointing out the problems that
they can see and they work with the colleges to better
themselves. This seems to be working. Colleges have
developed programs and lectures to help with education. This
year our Education Committee is working to implement a new
program within the Sovereign College. We are still in the early
stages, but I hope to have the lion’s share completed very
soon and I am very positive that this will help our Colleges and
Companion Knights even more. A new award has been
established by the Sovereign College. The “Diamond Award”
can be given to any lady or non-mason. This award is in its
final stages of preparation and will be made available soon to
the Colleges.
Only by working together will we keep our beloved York
Rite going. Companion Knights, please consider volunteering
to be part of a degree team in your college. It takes time and
effort to become proficient with our work, but I know we have
the talent to accomplish this. I have seen it in my travels and
have read the reports of your Grand Governors. Let’s keep it
going.
There is always so much more to say, I must keep in mind
that there are other people who have submitted articles with
their stories of success and so much happened at our 54 th
General Assembly. In closing, I want to thank all the
Companion Knights for their support and dedication to our
Fraternity. Companion Knights, I can’t stress enough, please
consider working in your College. There is much to do and
many people to meet.
Thank you for all your support this past year and I look
forward to meeting more of you in this coming year.
GRAND GOVERNOR WORKSHOP
54 th General Assembly - Nashville, Tennessee
The 54 th General Assembly of the York Rite Sovereign
College of North America was held at the Airport Marriot Hotel
in Nashville in July 2011 and at this assembly 40 Grand
Governors and 26 Deputy Grand Governors met on Friday
morning for a workshop as to the duties, responsibilities and
privileges concerning the office of Grand Governor. The session
started with a brief getting to know one another and then
down to business.
RED Bro. Raleigh C. Foster, Grand Governor for Kentucky,
presented a lecture concerning the proper protocol and
etiquette surrounding College functions and receiving the
Grand Governor and other Grand Officers of the York Rite
Sovereign College. This was followed by a talk on the
Constitution as it pertains to the responsibilities of the Grand
Governors and the Colleges. RED Bro. Jeffrey T. Powers, Regent
and Past Chairman of the Committee on the Study of the
Condition of the Order, turned this topic into a lively and
entertaining presentation.
RED Bro. David G. Walker, KCPC, Chancellor General
addressed the assembled brethren and gave an overview of the
College requirements and the Grand Governor’s
responsibilities.
RED Bro. David Hardie, Grand Governor for Ontario and
Chairman of the Committee on the Study of the Condition of
the Order, using some of the latest technologies, showed the
report forms and the importance of the various questions,
which when tallied gives the Board a better idea of what is
happening in the various Colleges and how the information is
used to assist in the improvement and betterment of the
Fraternity.
M. Pre-Em. Dist Bro. Joe R. Manning, Jr. took time out of
his busy schedule to attend part of the workshop and address
the Grand Governors and Deputy Grand Governors.
The summary of the workshop can be stated as most
enlightening. There are certainly areas in every College which
need to be improved and there are areas in every College
which can prove to be inspirational to the others. We have seen
areas where there are grave concerns and where efforts are
needed to prevent decline and failure. However, we have also
witnessed areas where there have been great successes and
promises for growth and enthusiasm. The key to success is the
effort put in by the members and especially the Officers of each
College. Leadership is a key factor and to those who have been
given the mantle of leadership great things are expected. We
lead by example and with the support of those we lead. It is a
trust of mutual cooperation and effort. Together we can do
anything and it is toward this end that we must direct our
course. The York Rite Sovereign College is a premiere Masonic
Body and as such must have premiere members who are willing
to give premiere service.
55th GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Toronto, Ontario - August 2-4, 2012
The 2012 General Assembly will
be held at the Hilton Airport Hotel in
Mississauga, Ontario, August 2-4,
2012. Mississauga is part of the
Greater Toronto Area and boasts
some of the biggest shopping malls in
Ontario. Today, Mississauga is the
sixth largest city in Canada situated
just west of Toronto and sharing the
shores of Lake Ontario with its neighbours of Oakville and
Toronto. Mississauga has also been rated as the safest city in
Canada for the last nine years in a row. It is also home to
Canada’s largest and busiest airport, Pearson International as
well as Ontario’s largest shopping mall at Square One.
Mississauga proudly identifies itself as a green city boasting
some 480 parks and woodlands within its city limits. Welcome
to this great big ‘small-town’ city and I hope you will be able to
spend some extra time while you are here to engage in some of
what Mississauga has to offer.
The preliminary agenda calls for a tour of the McMichael
Art Gallery on the Thursday afternoon and a time for
Jurisdictional Dinners in various restaurants in and near the
airport. Restaurants such as The Keg, Mother Tucker’s, and
Lone Star, are within walking distance of the hotel. Information
will be sent to the Grand Governors of each jurisdiction giving
them information as to restaurants and locations for them to
arrange their respective venues.
At 9:30 there will be a “Meet & Greet” at the Hilton where
a cash bar and dessert finger food will be served. This will give a
time for meeting old friends, making new ones and having a
good time.
On Friday we are planning a tour to Niagara Falls with a
Winery tour and luncheon. This will have those interested in
the tour leaving the hotel around 8:00 am and returning at 4:30
pm in time for the Candidates’ Orientation sessions. This will
allow the Candidates for the Order of the Purple Cross and their
ladies to be able to go on the tour. That evening will be the
annual Associate Regents Dinner.
Saturday will see the General Assembly in the morning
followed by the Order of the Purple Cross and the Installation
of Sovereign Officers in the afternoon and capped by the
Annual Grand Banquet that evening.
During the session there will be a hospitality suite and a
shuttle schedule for excursions to 2-3 of the local malls. More
on this will come out in the next issue of the CRUSADER.
Plan on being in Toronto next August for the General
Assembly! Registration packages for the assembly will be out
early in the New Year and contact for further information can
be obtained from RED Bro. David Hardie, General Chairman, at:
