After a 2004 season that nearly doubled the Lady Saints’ win total
from the previous year, Head Coach Tim Loesch is looking to
increase those numbers again in 2005. With a returning core of
several quality players including sophomore outside hitter
Meredeth Overton (Floyds Knobs, IN), and junior defensive
specialist Shannon Zehr (Carthage, NY), as well as an incoming
group filled with height, talent, and athleticism, the Saints will be
strong contenders in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference
this year.
Overton had an outstanding freshman year at Limestone. She is
ranked at the top of the Limestone College record book in both
kills in a single match with 23, and kills in a single season with
324. That single season record also ranks her 4 th on the career
totals list, just over 200 fewer than Limestone’s all time leader
Kerrie Williams (2001-2003). Overton is also in the books,
ranking 2 nd in single season digs with 360, and 4 th in both blocks
and aces in a single match with 32 and 5 respectively.
One of the Lady Saints’ best defenders last season, Zehr recorded 181 digs in 87 games. Also returning is
junior defensive specialist Megan Woods (Charleston, SC) who recorded 95 digs in just 58 games.
Limestone fans can look for sophomores Hayley Malool (Hilton Head, SC), and Sarah Briggs (Gilbert, SC)
to build off of a year of experience and improve in 2005.
“Our returning squad improved significantly during last season
and over the off-season.” Loesch said. “We gained a lot of
experience playing at a higher level and improved technique in
many of our volleyball skills. The returning players are also
familiar with some of the offensive and defensive schemes that
we will use again this year. Furthermore, we made great strides
in our attitude and fitness.”
Junior College transfers Michelle Cash (Chesnee, SC), Amber
Wise (Brownsville, TX) and Julie Oleson (Seattle, WA) will
add talent and experience to complement the height of incoming
freshmen Melissa Thomas (Easley, SC), Samanatha Flannery
(Acworth, GA), Lynn Milam (Woodstock, GA), and Alison
Hamilton (Purcellville, VA). Thomas and Flannery, at 6-3 and
6-2 respectively will dominate as middle hitters at the net, along
with Milam who stands at 5-11. Hamilton will vie for the
position of setter.
Limestone’s trio of transfers will add experience and leadership to a young roster. Last season, Wise was a
captain at Temple Community College. She led her team to two North Texas Junior College titles, a Region
V Championship, and an appearance at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. Cash, a 6-0 middle
hitter, and captain at Spartanburg Methodist College, led her team to a runner-up finish in the NJCAA
Region X Tournament in 2004. Oleson led her team to a 33-15 record at Shoreline Community College in
2004, and was the top defensive specialist at USC Aiken in 2003.
Thomas earned Best Defensive Player and All-Region honors at
Easley High School. In 2004 she led her team to an almost perfect
14-1 record. Flannery, a captain at Kell High School in Georgia,
earned All-County recognition her senior year. She led her club
team, Christian Sports of Atlanta, to a 2 nd place finish in their
division of the Southern Region. At Woodstock High School,
Milam was twice named captain and was a four time All-County
selection. Hamilton led both Loudoun Valley High School and
North Sanpete High School to 3A State Championships. She also
competed in the 2004 USA Junior Olympic National Volleyball
Championships for Northern Virginia Volleyball.
Loesch is excited about this year’s new faces. “During our first full
recruiting season this past year, we were able to identify and sign
several quality players who will have an immediate impact in our
conference. Our junior college transfers will bring maturity and
college level playing experience to our team, while our outstanding
freshmen have extensive club volleyball backgrounds. All the
newcomers are expected to see significant court time immediately.”
The Lady Saints are excited to have Talayna Akrie as a student assistant this season. Akrie was a stand out
starting setter during her single season at Limestone. She played in all 31 matches last season, recording a
Limestone record 890 assists. That record stands at the top of the single season and career record list for the
Lady Saints. She also ranks 1 st and 3 rd in single match assists with 60 and 53 (twice) respectively. Akrie is
one of only two Limestone players to ever record a triple double (26 assists, 25 digs, and 10 blocks vs.
Barton) and was honored with the team’s Most Valuable Player Award. Prior to Limestone, Akrie starred at
Middle Tennessee State and Colby Community College. Her experience, skills, and leadership will be
extremely valuable to this year’s team.
Loesch will also have Bill Scott and Bradley Smith on staff this year. Scott
brings extensive coaching and high-level playing experience to the team and
will serve as Loesch’s lead assistant. Smith, a volunteer assistant, will again
help train the team. This past season in Denver, CO, he helped his team win
the USA Volleyball Men’s A National Championship.
The 2005 season could be the best ever for Limestone Volleyball, and
Loesch is ready for it. This year’s team motto is “be the best,” as he will
encourage his athletes to excel both on and off the court. He will focus on
teamwork, fitness, desire and determination this season. “We now have the
talent in place to compete with anyone in the conference. We are more
athletic, more experienced, more skilled, and have more depth than last year.
We should be better in nearly every position compared to last season.”
Head Coach: Tim Loesch
Tim Loesch is entering his second season as Limestone’s head
volleyball coach. In his first year at the helm, Loesch nearly doubled
the Lady Saints' win total from the previous season.
He began his volleyball career as an assistant at Charlotte Country
Day School, where his efforts yielded two conference championships,
along with a 5 th and two 3 rd place finishes in the state playoffs. He
then traveled to Raleigh to rebuild the Peace College program, where
he helped the college post its only two winning seasons. From 2001-
2003 Loesch served as head coach for Butler High School in
Charlotte, NC, where he accumulated an overall record of 40-32 and earned two state-playoff
berths.
Loesch also served as the head coach for the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club for seven years and
director for three years. With Carolina Juniors he led teams to two regional championships and
two regional runner-up finishes. The 2004 club team qualified for the USA Junior Olympic
Volleyball Championships.
Tim also holds USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program Level II, ASEP and IMPACT
coaching accreditations. He has hosted or worked numerous clinics, camps and tournaments
throughout the Southeast.
Tim has played competitively on indoor and outdoor USA Volleyball adult teams for over ten
years. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in business administration from the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he also played for their men’s club volleyball
team.
completing her degree in Psychology at Limestone College.
As one of two seniors, and a captain on the 2004 Limestone squad,
Talayna played in 113 out of 115 games for the Saints, and was one of
only three players to play in all 31 matches. During her single season at
Limestone, the starting setter ranked second on the team in both kill
percentage at .224, and service aces with 34. She also led the team with
Limestone College
Facilities
Volleyball
Limestone College has some of the finest facilities in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic
Conference and in NCAA Division II.
In the summer of 2004, Limestone College made a major announcement. The
College is building a new Physical Education Center that is expected to be
completed this fall. The new facility will offer three classrooms, nine offices, locker
rooms, Athletic Training Education facilities, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a
practice facility for wrestling.
The Timken Center
PE Center
Located on Thompson street near Limestone Springs, the facility will be the first new
building constructed on the Limestone campus since the Timken Center was
dedicated 30 years ago. The Physical Education facility will give Limestone’s
Athletic Training Education Program the necessary space to meet the accreditation
standards of the American Medical Association’s Commission on Accreditation of
Allied Health Education Programs, which will allow Limestone students to sit for the
National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification Examination.
In addition to the new Athletic Training facilities, the new building will also house a
3,900 square foot weight training facility which will be a great asset to all of
Limestone’s approximately 350 varsity athletes as well as all other students, faculty,
and staff. Limestone’s wrestling team, which completed its inaugural season in
2004-2005, will have a practice area and locker room in the new building, although
the team will continue to hold its matches in the Timken Center.
The Timken Center, built in 1976, is the center of the Athletic Department and will
celebrate its 30 th birthday this school year. The building houses athletic offices,
athletic training facilities, and classrooms.
The Timken Center also houses Timken Gym, a 1,500 seat arena that hosts men’s
and women’s basketball games, as well as volleyball and wrestling matches.
Timken Gym
Limestone’s Aquatic Center, a junior Olympic sized swimming pool, is also located
in the Timken Center. Home to the Lady Saints Swimming team, the pool features
an 800 square foot observation balcony, coupled with 2,500 square feet of deck
space.
All of Limestone’s playing fields have undergone recent renovations. None more so
than Saints Field. Saints Field serves as the game field for lacrosse and soccer. The
field was completely resurfaced in the summer of 2004. During that renovation, an
irrigation system was installed and the field area was enclosed with netting and a
brick seating area.
Recent renovations have made Bob Prevatte Field one of the best baseball
stadiums in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. Beautifully situated
alongside the quarry, the field now features new dugouts, a new backstop, new
fencing, and a new equipment storage building.
The recently remodeled Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center is also one of
the top facilities in the CVAC. The facility includes eight lighted tennis courts
and a pavilion that houses tennis offices, as well as a club house area for
student-athletes.
Located between Bob Prevatte Field and the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis
Center, Lady Saints Field is one of the best conditioned softball playing fields
in the conference.
The Saints also enjoy the use of four practice fields, including a new full-sized
field which sits next to the Saints Field. Limestone also has a scenic Cross
Country Course that borders the quarry and Limestone's athletic fields. It is
utilized by all 17 varsity sports and is a tremendous training tool for Limestone
student-athletes.
Limestone College was established in 1845 by Dr. Thomas Curtis and his son, Dr.
William Curtis, distinguished scholars born and educated in England. Limestone
College was the first women’s college in South Carolina and one of the first in the
United States.
In the late 1960s, Limestone College became fully coeducational. The campus is a
unique combination of history and progress, with nine of our campus buildings
included on the National Register of Historic Places.
Since 1991, Limestone College has completed
renovations of several of its historic campus structures:
the Montgomery Classroom Building, Ebert Residence
Hall, Carroll Fine Arts Building, Hamrick Hall of
Science, Eunice Ford Residence Hall, and Dixie Lodge
Student Center. While the College’s ties to the past are
visible in the many historic structures, these renovated
facilities now house the modern technology necessary to
maintain Limestone’s reputation as an outstanding
liberal arts college.
