In 2003, the name of the Lady Saints’
game was survival. With a transition in
the coaching staff, the Limestone College
women’s soccer team competed with only
thirteen players on the roster. Facing
injury, they played four games one player
short, with only ten on the field. Although
they faced many hardships, the Lady
Saints persevered and managed to put
together four quality wins in the middle of
the season before injuries shortened their
season’s potential.
A tough 2003 season has created many
positives for the 2004 squad. The Lady Saints return 10 players, only two of which are seniors.
All ten were starters in 2003 and will be competing hard for starting positions in 2004. With at
least a year of college playing experience on their resume, they take the field determined to show
the competition that 2003 is a memory and they have set their sights on the CVAC tournament
and ultimately a CVAC championship.
The returning ten will be joined by a large and talented freshman class in 2004. Twelve new faces
will join the Lady Saints and share in their goal to start a winning tradition in women’s soccer at
Limestone College.
The biggest impact on the 2004 squad may come at the goalkeeper position. Newcomer Liz
Eichhorn (Fort Collins, CO), an NCAA Division I transfer, will bring excitement in the net in
2004. She is a very talented goalkeeper with great range and quick footwork. Her leadership and
winning attitude, along with her talent will help direct the defense and keep the ball out of the net.
Defense will be a top priority for the Saints in
2004. The Lady Saints look to cut their goals
against (51) in half from 2003. In order to do this
they have added depth to an already strong
defense. Freshmen Kristina Silva (Pickering,
Ontario Canada) and Sara Hemphill (Clydesville,
North Carolina) will join sophomores Erika Blom
(Gambrills, MD) and Ashley Dugan (Severna
Park, MD) and junior Mariah York (Columbia,
SC) in solidifying the back.
The Lady Saints also want to increase their
offensive opportunities inside the Red Zone.
They will look to get off more shots on goal,
more crosses into the penalty area, and get more
players involved in the attack.
In 2003, the Lady Saints relied heavily on the
amazing performance of center midfielder Rachel
Moreland (Odenton, MD). Moreland had a
tremendous year with 9 goals and 19 points in 16
games played. She topped her season off by
receiving 2 nd -team All-CVAC honors. Moreland also received CVAC
Player of the Week honors when she scored three goals in two conference
matches leading Limestone to two October victories.
In 2004, Moreland’s offensive threat will be joined in the midfield by
returning players Erin Hoffman (Fort Collins, CO) and Melissa Tippett
(Falling Waters, WV). Coach Benji Walton will be looking for Hoffman,
Moreland, and Tippett to combine and get forward into the attack.
Newcomer Ashley Vaughan (Pickering, Ontario, CAN) and Junior
College transfer Lane Wellnitz (Emporia, KS) will also provide offensive
support and the ability to distribute and create dangerous attacks out of
the midfield.
At the forward position Limestone is looking to increase offensive
production. The Saints will turn to senior Andrea Cooper (Columbia, SC)
to lead the attack. Cooper is coming off an outstanding spring and looks
to be in the best shape of her career. The Lady Saints will look to her as a
target player that can lead and work off of freshman forwards Katie
Daniels (Douglasville, GA) and Cathy Zgraggen (Lilburn, GA).
Limestone will be taking on a tough schedule in 2004. They open their
season against a proven region opponent in USC-Upstate. They will take
on another Peach Belt Conference opponent, UNC-Pembroke, and three
South Atlantic Conference opponents, Wingate University, Newberry
College, and Lenoir-Rhyne College. All will prove to be challenging, but
will help prepare Limestone College for the ultimate goal of post-season
play.
Coach Benji Walton is looking to establish a program that will be respected not only in the
CVAC, but also in the Southeast Region. He believes that the only way to improve as a team and
establish a credible program is to compete against tough opponents. “This difficult schedule,
although challenging, will be a valuable tool to prepare us for the goal of competing in the CVAC
tournament and ultimately winning a CVAC Championship.”
The Lady Saints are hungry to start the 2004 season in a new direction and establish a soccer
tradition at Limestone College. The 2004 squad is stronger and more determined to become a top
program in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. The Lady Saints are ready to make their
mark on the conference and step up to the challenge in 2004.
Coach Walton: “If we gave an award for the biggest turnaround
in a year it would have to go to Dre. She came off an average fall
in 2003 to have one of the greatest springs of any player I have
ever seen. She raised her fitness level tremendously and began to
be not only a threat with a long hard shot but also a distributor, getting the ball to the midfield and wings and creating
more offensive opportunities in our attack. Of all of our players entering the 2004 season, I am most excited to see
what Dre is going to bring to the field. If she can keep the momentum she created for herself in the spring, she may be
in store for a career year. With her competitive drive and determination to finish her career on a winning team, she
should prove to be a major staple in our offense.”
LIMESTONE FACILITIES
LIMESTONE COLLEGE
Limestone Physical Education Center
Limestone College made a major announcement in the summer of 2004. The College will build a new physical
education center, expected to be completed early in the spring semester. The new facility will offer three
classrooms, nine offices, locker rooms, Athletic Training Education facilities, a fitness center, and a wrestling
practice facility.
Located on Thompson street near Limestone Springs, the facility will be the first new building on the Limestone
campus since the Timken Center was dedicated 30 years ago. The Physical Education facility will give Limestone’s
Athletic Training Education Program the necessary space to meet accreditation standards of the American Medical
Association’s Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs which will allow Limestone
students to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification Examination.
In addition to the new Athletic Training facilities, the facility will also house a 3,900 square foot weight training
facility which will be a great asset for Limestone’s approximately 300 varsity athletes as well as all other students,
faculty, and staff. Limestone’s wrestling team, which begins competition in the 2004-2005 school year, will have a
practice area in the new building, although the team will hold its matches in the Timken Center.
The Timken Center, built in 1976, is the center of the Limestone Athletic Department, housing athletic offices,
athletic training facilities, and classrooms. The Timken Center also houses Limestone’s basketball arena, a 1,500 seat
facility that hosts men’s and women’s basketball games as well as volleyball and wrestling matches. Limestone’s
junior Olympic sized pool is also located inside the Timken Center. Home to the Lady Saints Swimming Team, the
pool features an 800 square foot observation balcony coupled with 2,500 square feet of deck space.
