leadership and work ethic. McCormack’s leadership to the
team is indispensable. Adding depth at the guard position will
be Jereme Schmotzer. Jereme red-shirted last season and will
give the Saints solid minutes backing up Shawn Poppie and
Marquintus Jones. Jereme is the son of Coker College head
coach Dan Schmotzer. Competing for playing time will be
Kenny White. Kenny played high school basketball at Spring
Valley High School (Columbia, SC), and played AAU
basketball with the likes of pro players Ed Scott and Rolando
Howell.
FORWARD:
The forward positions may be filled by a multitude of players
this season. Ben Touchberry should get the nod at the “4” spot. Ben averaged 9.3 points and 23
minutes per game while starting 15 games last season. In the season opener against USC-Spartanburg,
Touchberry scored a team-high 23 points and pulled down 4 rebounds. Ben is a difficult matchup for
defenders because he is a deadly shooter at 6’6”. He is also expected to guard some of the quicker
wings and forwards from other teams.
Backing up Touchberry at the forward spot will be two freshmen: Antonio Golden and Jamaal
Dawkins. Golden was a highly recruited player for Georgia powerhouse Creekside High School.
Every starter from his team the last two years has signed to play college basketball. Golden was a team
captain on that team. An all-around athlete, Golden earned 11 varsity letters while at Creekside,
including letters in basketball, cross country, and track. His size and shooting ability give him the
chance to play inside and outside. Dawkins is a local product from Chesnee, South Carolina. He scored
over 1,000 career points at Chesnee, was a 3-time all region selection, and was named all-state as a
senior.
CENTER:
Returning to Limestone is forward/center Darrell Tate. Tate brings a strong resume with him, having
recorded Limestone’s single season rebounding and field goal percentage records as a sophomore. In
the 2001-2002 season, Darrell averaged 16.1 points per game and posted a field goal percentage of 57.5
percent in his first two years. Darrell’s ability to shoot the ball will allow him to play on the perimeter
as well as in the post. In a game against rival USC-Spartanburg in 2001, Darrell scored 24 points and
pulled down 18 rebounds on the way to a Saints victory. Limestone hopes it will see much more of that
as Tate projects to be one of the top post players in the conference.
Colin Pond will see considerable time at the “5” spot. Colin’s strength
and size help him to be a menace in the paint. Last season Pond averaged
3.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in only 13 minutes of playing time
per game. In a game against Lees-McRae, in which Pond played his 2 nd
most minutes of the season, he scored 7 points and grabbed 10 rebounds
to go along with 2 blocked shots. Also seeing action inside will be
sophomore Bryant Camp. Camp played just 10 minutes per game last
season, but has worked hard this summer and seeks more consistency in
his game. His best game came against St. Andrews last season when he
scored 13 points in 11 minutes to go along with 3 blocks. Sumner
Benton will also help anchor the middle for the Saints. Benton, brings a
different element to the Saints’ post game. He is a wide-body, but has
excellent footwork and has a knack for scoring in the middle. Last season,
against Queens University of Charlotte, Benton matched up with 6’11”
center Moustapha Diouf and had one of his best games, scoring 11 points
and bringing down 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
