<strong>Research</strong> Capacity<br />
Not only is <strong>the</strong> Toronto Medical<br />
Discovery Tower (TMDT) a<br />
shining example of partnership,<br />
it is also an amazing opportunity for<br />
growth and expansion of <strong>UHN</strong> <strong>Research</strong>.<br />
<strong>UHN</strong>-MaRS Priorities Aligned<br />
The story starts in June 2001, when <strong>UHN</strong><br />
sold lands to <strong>the</strong> Medical and Related<br />
Sciences (MaRS) Discovery District, a<br />
non-profit group mandated to bring<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r research, capital and industry.<br />
“<strong>UHN</strong> was very involved in <strong>the</strong><br />
process from day one,” says Dr.<br />
Christopher J. Paige, Vice President,<br />
<strong>Research</strong>.“We selected MaRS because<br />
we knew it provided much-needed<br />
space to expand our research programs,<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir vision of accelerating<br />
commercialization was completely<br />
aligned with our priorities.”<br />
Ultimately <strong>UHN</strong> became a full partner<br />
in <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> main research<br />
tower, which came to be called <strong>the</strong><br />
UNIVERSITY HEALTH NETWORK 17
