Update July 2013
Nottingham Life Cycle team back in the saddle
As reported in April’s newsletter, the University’s Life Cycle team is back in the saddle for Nottingham Life Cycle 3 from 19 August
to 1 September!
With each turn of their wheels they’ll be raising money for Stroke Rehabilitation Research at the University, part of the Health and
Well-being theme of Impact: The Nottingham Campaign. Stroke Rehabilitation Research will address the often neglected needs of
stroke survivors following hospital care, and the need for stroke specialist provision of rehabilitation at home.
Get involved on Sunday 1 September!
And this year there will be two free cyclosportives taking place to mark the end of their challenge, for you to get involved.
With rides for cycling enthusiasts and less-experienced or younger riders, plus a community BBQ for those who prefer not to ride,
there will be something for everyone as well as post-event celebrations at Lakeside Arts Centre.
Entry to each event is free and sponsorship is encouraged. See www.nottingham.ac.uk/lifecycle/getinvolved for details.
You can sponsor the Life Cycle 3 team at www.justgiving.com/LifeCycle3-Team or get involved on Sunday 1 September
Follow the team’s progress via the Life Cycle blog at http://blogs.nottingham.ac.uk/lifecycle and on Twitter via @uonLifecycle.
Your support will make a difference to hundreds of stroke survivors and will help to put the brakes on the impact of stroke.
The Big Wheel Workplace Challenge
Thank you to all the 76 people who registered and took part in the workplace challenge.
I hope you enjoyed it. Although we only came 12 in the league table, we collectively
made 3,265 journeys which was the most for an organisation, travelled over 13,669
miles, which means we could have cycled or walked to the Ningbo China campus and
back, which is an amazing achievement. You've burned off 690,682 calories which
means collectively have burnt off 2740 donuts and you've saved 1,731kg of CO2.
Congratulations to our leading riders at the university were Tim Orton and Clare
Simcock. They share the same office so there was some friendly competition. Tim’s
journeys were mostly cycling and Clare mostly walking. They received a Sustrans
goodie bag and free entry into the 25mile Cycle Live ride on Sunday. I want to send a
big congratulations to you all, and I hope it made you cycle or walk a few more journeys
that you might normally have done, I know I did.
Fix-it Stands have arrived!!
Our newest cycling infrastructure has arrived! These fix it stands make
the most commonly used tools available to cyclist 24 hours a day.
The first stand will be installed on the King’s Meadow campus shortly,
undercover next to the rear cycle parking. They will also be one
installed at Sutton Bonington, Jubilee campus and two on University
Park campus. They allow you to support your bike off the ground like
our Dr Bike does to make adjustments easier, also providing you with
the tools to fix small problems including a bike pump. Once they are
installed we will be locating Dr Bike near them, so if you have any
questions about them Dr Bike will be on hand to answer them. We will
also be arranging some other events in the coming months to help you
use these stands. We also have puncture repair kits distributed
around the campus, to complement the new stands.
