A history of polydrug use was another significant predictor of recent sharing of equipment (p = 0.019) with those having used five or more drugs being over three times more likely to share (adjusted OR = 3.31, CI 1.40-7.79). Importantly, sharing was also more likely among those who had started injecting drugs within the previous 5 years (Figure 5, p = 0.014), with people who took up the habit recently being between two and seven times more likely to share equipment than those with longer histories of injecting behaviour (6-10 years, adjusted OR = 0.41, CI 0.2-0.85; 11-15 years, adjusted OR = 0.30, CI 0.14-0.67; 16-20 years, adjusted OR = 0.26, CI 0.11-0.61; 21-25 years, adjusted OR = 0.14, CI 0.04-0.42; and over 25 years, adjusted OR = 0.21, CI 0.05-0.92). 4.6 Blood donation Of those who had ever injected drugs, 15% had donated blood at some stage (Table 1a). Although we did not ascertain when blood donation had occurred, at least five individuals gave blood after commencing injecting, since they first injected before the age of 17 (the permitted age for blood donation is 17 years). Three of these five were hepatitis C positive in this study. A further 23 blood-donating individuals (13 of whom were hepatitis C positive) had commenced injecting before the age of 20; around the same time as they would be permitted to give blood.
