City of
Delaware
2
Letter from the Director
Dear Residents:
This has been a very busy, productive and exciting year for the City
of Delaware Parks & Recreation Department:
City Council just approved a “collaboration” between the City and the
Central Ohio YMCA for the YMCA to provide programming and
oversight at Mingo Park Recreation complex. Under this
arrangement all current programs run by the City, such as Youth
Baseball and Softball, Adult Softball and Jack Florance Pool
operations will be operated by YMCA staff, resulting in improved
efficiencies, the elimination of duplicated programming and
streamlined operating costs to the City. The City will continue to
maintain all parks and facilities maintenance and facility rentals.
In addition:
· Work continues on Glen Ross Park, our 22nd park and newest
neighborhood park, opening in September.
· Extensive renovations to Mingo Park and Smith Park, funded by
passage of the 2008 Recreation Levy, are taking place this fall.
· The YMCA is preparing to open the Community Center/YMCA on
Houk Road in November.
As always, please let us know your thoughts, so we can
continue to bring you the best services for the best value.
Sincerely,
Allen Rothermel
Interim Parks and Recreation Director
off insect and disease problems. One inch of water is
roughly equal to a hose running for 10 minutes.
If you would like to plant, prune, or remove a tree in this area,
you must first receive permission from the City of Delaware
Parks & Recreation Department. Shrubs are not permitted to
Training and Community Center
Since passing the recreation levy in August of 2008, the Recreation
Steering Advisory Committee along with City staff and our partners,
the Central Ohio YMCA and the Ohio National Guard, have been hard
at work planning and designing Delaware’s new Training and
Community Center. Construction is nearly complete on the Delaware
Community Center/YMCA portion of the project on South Houk Road
and the facility is expected to open by November of 2011.
Park Improvements
The recreation levy passed in August 2008, also provides funding for
park improvements around the City of Delaware. The Recreation
Steering Advisory Committee has worked through a process of
prioritizing needed improvements to many of the parks around
Delaware. So far, aging ball field lights have been replaced at Mingo
and Smith Parks and four new dugouts have been installed at Smith
Park. Other improvements include field, parking and walking trail
improvements at Mingo Park, playground equipment, infield
improvements, and walking trail improvements at Smith Park, as
well as other park upgrades throughout the system including
Stratford Woods Park and Kensington Park.
In addition, the park improvements funds are building an additional park
next to the Training and Community Center site that will include needed
athletic field space, a nature area, a community shelter, and more.
Bikeways
In June 2010, City Council passed a bikeway plan which establishes
goals and standards for our bikeway system including bike paths,
sidewalks and walking trails. The City currently has about 14 miles
of trails. Some of the major goals of the bikeway plan are to
increase connectivity between existing trails, provide connections
across town including to the new YMCA/Community Recreation
Center, and to improve maintenance on existing trails.
An existing Bikeway Map is available on the city’s website at
www.delawareohio.net under the Parks and Recreation tab.

Have You Considered Adoption?
The Delaware Parks & Recreation Department has a variety of parks, trails, and
landscape beds looking for someone to adopt them. Individuals, families, church
groups, businesses or other agencies can beautify their community while
spending quality time outdoors and getting some exercise. Please consider
serving your community through one of the following adoption opportunities.
Adopt a Park
Delaware has 21 parks with three more on the way by 2011. Help clean up and
maintain your neighborhood park or help out with one of our larger community
parks through park adoption.
Adopt a Trail
The City has over 14 miles of bikeways which are difficult to monitor and maintain.
Take a walk, do a little clean up, and report back any maintenance issues to help
keep our trails looking good and safe for walkers, runners and bikers.
Adopt a Landscape Bed
In an effort to provide more beautification in our parks and at key City entrances
and gateways (i.e. the new Point intersection), we are looking for plant/material
donations and/or people to help maintain some of our most prominent landscape
beds around town.
