WNIT is PBS for Michiana, and this fall PBS again brings us an astounding array of new programs.
First, as seen on the cover and on the page opposite, we renew our commitment to the best in
children’s programs with the premiere of The Cat in The Hat Knows a Lot About That! Voiced
by award-winning actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat guides friends Sally and Nick
– with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2 – on fun-filled adventures where they make
natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. Filled
with both adventure and silliness, The Cat in The Hat Knows a Lot About That! will appeal to
preschoolers’ natural curiosity and engage them in the process of scientific exploration and discovery.
Ken Burns extends his historic series of Americana when the Baseball series returns with “The
Tenth Inning” on September 28 and 29. The new episodes detail the national pastime during the
1990s and 2000s, including the Boston Red Sox as they break “the curse of the Bambino” and win
the 2004 World Series. On October 6, WNIT broadcasts a stunning new version of Shakespeare’s
Macbeth, starring Patrick Stewart in the title role and Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth.
In mid-October, WNIT will broadcast a far-reaching documentary called God in America. For
three consecutive evenings, we will present two episodes of the six-part series. Together, God in
America addresses two fundamental questions: How has religious belief shaped American history?
And, how did America become the world’s most religiously diverse nation?
The series explores the origins of America’s unique religious landscape and considers the beginnings
of America’s experiment in religious liberty, including the Bill of Rights. The program continues
with religious belief during the Civil War period, followed by the intellectual and cultural conflicts
between traditional religious beliefs and the forces of modernity, which reached a crescendo in
the 1925 trial of John Scopes, a Dayton, Tennessee teacher arrested for teaching evolution. God
in America then examines the many contradictions of religion in modern America and concludes
with the political aspirations of the religious right, the dynamics of the contemporary religious
marketplace, and the re-emergence of a religious voice in the Democratic Party. At the same time
America is fast becoming the most religiously diverse nation as Hispanic Catholics, Pentecostals,
Muslims, Buddhists and those who consider themselves “spiritual but not religious” enter the
ever-expanding religious marketplace.
Whatever the dictates of your conscience in matters of faith, you will find God in America to be
riveting. It is another in a long list of programs found on PBS and nowhere else. WNIT – bringing
the Bigger Picture – and the best programs – to Michiana.

On The
Cover
This fall marks the premiere of a new
preschool series that will hit the ground
running with 53 years of positive track
record for the lead character. The
Cat in the Hat Knows a lot About
That! features six-year-old Sally and
Nick, best friends and next door
neighbors, who are transported on a
magical journey to all corners of the globe
to make natural science discoveries with
The Cat in the Hat as their guide. Along
for the ride are the Cat’s two energetic
helpers, the mop-headed zany duo: Thing
1 and Thing 2.
Sally and Nick embark with the Cat in his
one-of-a-kind custom vehicle, the Thingama-jigger,
a quintessentially Seussian
contraption that can sprout wings,
pontoons, booster rockets, skis — just
about anything! In the Thinga-ma-jigger,
they can journey down to the bottom of
the sea to observe the giant sea worms,
zip over to the rain forest to find out how
many animals make their home in the great
Kapok tree, or shrink down to the size of a
bee to visit a hive and discover how honey
is made. Award-winning comedian and
actor Martin Short provides the voice of
The Cat in the Hat.
The Cat in the Hat Knows a lot About
That! joins Curious George, Sid The
dances from around the world. When
children share in Angelina’s experiences,
they’re inspired to pursue their dreams,
too!
GREAT PERFORMANCES
“Renée Fleming & Dmitri
Hvorostovsky: A Musical
Odyssey in St. Petersburg”
Wednesday, September 1, 8pm
Reigning American soprano Renée
Fleming travels to Russia for a special visit
to St. Petersburg with her friend and
frequent co-star, Russian baritone Dmitri
Hvorostovky. There, in the “Venice of the
North,” they explore and perform in some of
the most spectacular locations of a city
that was born in the remarkable mind and
imagination of the young Czar Peter the
Great – a city that he named not for himself,
but for Saint Peter.
NATURE
“Drakensberg:
Barrier of Spears”
Sunday, September 5, 8pm
The Drakensberg Mountains are southern
Africa’s Alps, rising more than 11,000 feet
into the sky. But beneath their shimmering
beauty lies an incredibly hostile environment
for the surprising number of creatures
that manage to live there. Each spring,
drenching rains destroy the grasslands at
the base of the mountains, and those who
would survive must climb straight up sheer
cliffs of volcanic rock, through gauntlets of
storms and snow, to reach the carpets of grass
on the plateau.
“Cuba: The Accidental Eden”
Sunday, September 26, 8pm
This small island’s varied landscape, its
location in the heart of the Caribbean and
its longstanding place at the center of Cold
War politics have all combined to preserve
some of the richest and most unusual natural
environments of the hemisphere. For
decades, Cuba’s wild landscapes
lay untouched while its Caribbean
neighbors poisoned or paved over their ecological
riches. As tourism increases, what will
happen to Cuba’s stunning biodiversity —
an island filled with amphibians, reptiles and
the most biologically diverse freshwater fish
in the region?
MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!
“Inspector Lewis, Series III”
“Counter Culture Blues”
Sunday, September 5, 9pm
While on a routine disturbance call, Lewis
is shocked to encounter a rock star believed
to have died years ago. Could her sudden
reappearance and attempt at a comeback
album have any connection to the murder
of a young orphan nearby? Joanna Lumley
(“Absolutely Fabulous”) guest stars as the
rocker Lewis once idolized.
RIBBON OF SAND (HD only)
Monday, September 5, 10:30pm
The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a
slim and moving line of sand in the open
Atlantic. Many travelers think they know
these islands, but south of Ocracoke Inlet
there rises a luminous bar of sand 60 miles
in extent, with no roads, no bridges and no
hotels. These are the wild beaches of Cape
Lookout – one of the few remaining natural
barrier islands in the world.
HISTORY DETECTIVES
“Chicago Clock, Universal
Friends, War Dog Letter”
Mondays, September 6-13, 9pm
How could one clock regulate time for an
entire region, and was this that clock? Then,
a document seems connected to an early
controversial religion, the first founded by an
American-born woman. So why is her name
missing from this document? And, in an
encore segment, Tukufu Zuberi investigates
what went wrong during a WWII dogtraining
program on Cat Island.
LATIN MUSIC USA
“Bridges”/“The Salsa
Revolution”
Wednesday, September 8, 9pm
The first hour traces the rise of Latin jazz and
the explosion of the mambo and the cha-cha
as they swept the U.S. from East to West and
looks at how Latin music infiltrated rhythm
and blues and rock ‘n’ roll through the 1960s.
The second hour explores how Puerto Ricans
and other Latinos in New York reinvented
the son cubano and the plena from Puerto
Rico by adding elements from soul and jazz
to create salsa – which became a defining
rhythm for Latinos the world over.
“The Chicano Wave”/“Divas and
Superstars”
Wednesday, September 15, 9pm
Mexican Americans in California, Texas and
throughout the Southwest created their own
distinct musical voices during the second
half of the 20th century. This episode shows
how their music played an important role
in the struggle for Chicano civil rights and
ultimately propelled them from the
barrio to the national stage. The final hour
focuses on the Latin pop explosion of the
turn of the 21st century and the success of
artists like Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and
Shakira in the English-language market.
As studios concentrate on star-driven pop,
Latino youth have gravitated toward urban
fusions like Spanish rap and reggaetón, as
well as rock en Español.
remote corner of the Himalaya previously
off-limits to outsiders, a team of explorers
and scientists climbs for the first time into
human-carved caves thousands of years
old. They find priceless 14th-century wall
that may reveal some secrets about Shangri-la.
SECRETS OF THE DEAD
“Aztec Massacre”
Wednesday, September 15, 8pm
Throughout recent times, historians have
believed that when the Spanish conquistadors
arrived in Aztec territory in the 15th
century, they were welcomed as returning
light-skinned gods by the Aztecs, who put
up little resistance to their conquest. But
now, a new find outside of Mexico City
is turning history on its head. The
discovery: more than 400 bodies, many
of which show signs of having been
mutilated and even eaten.
“Irish Escape”
Wednesday, September 22, 8pm
It has been called the most outrageous
escape story in the history of the high seas.
In 1876, after eight years of incarceration at
Fremantle Prison in Western Australia, six
Irish political prisoners escaped to America
on board the American whaler Catalpa.
Under the pretext of a whaling voyage, the
Catalpa and its unassuming captain, George
Smith Anthony, had sailed from New
Monday, September 20, 10:30pm
Often thought of as the other Mexican
muralist, beside his more flamboyant
compatriot Diego Rivera, Orozco was a
leader of the Mexican Renaissance. His bold,
dynamic frescoes had a profound impact on
American painters and inspired Franklin D.
Roosevelt to put artists to work during the
Great Depression. His most famous U.S.
murals – The Table of Universal
it strikes with deadly precision, delivering
venom that is packed with three different
kinds of toxins 10 times more deadly than
needed to kill an adult human. Without
treatment, the mortality rate is 100 percent.
man rode out from the salons of New York
to the wilds of New Mexico. He went to kill
a wolf. Not just any wolf, but an outlaw, the
leader of a marauding, cattle killing pack.
But by the time Ernest Thompson Seton
finally met the renegade Lobo, the wolf had
become a hero in his eyes. He would write
a tale of that encounter that led both to the
establishment of the national park system
and the Boy Scout movement in America.
AMERICAN HORIZONS:
THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ART
SINSABAUGH (HD only)
Sunday, October 3, 10:30pm
Art Sinsabaugh (1924-1983) made his
artistic breakthrough in the early 1960s
with panoramic landscapes of the Midwest
that were unprecedented in both form and
subject matter. He used a giant 12x20-inch
“banquet” camera that allowed him to
marry a sublime and expansive 19th-century
vision with mid-20th-century formalism.
His remarkable photographs capture a richly
nuanced sense of place and the ever-changing
face of the American environment.
“A Letter to Elia”
Monday, October 4, 9pm
Elia Kazan’s name was brought front and
center to the world again during the buzz
surrounding the March 1999 Academy
Awards. He was to receive an Oscar for
Lifetime Achievement, an honor that
divided Hollywood. Then 89 years old,
Kazan was primarily remembered for
his impressive directorial body of work
in the 1950s – On the Waterfront, East
of Eden, A Streetcar Named Desire, Gentleman’s
Agreement, A Face in the Crowd – but
remained controversial.
NOVA
Tuesday, 8pm.
“AstroSpies” – October 5
While NASA astronauts were captivating
the world with the Apollo lunar landings,
the U.S. was engaged in a top-secret military
manned space program. Now, investigative
author Jim Bamford probes the untold story
of the elite corps of clandestine astronauts
who were never told of the true purpose
of their training program. Bamford travels
to Russia to reveal the secrets of the Soviet
response – the prototypes of the “Almaz”
military space stations that, if deployed,
might have led to a Cold War showdown in
outer space.
“Building the Great
Cathedrals” – October 19
Carved from a hundred million pounds of
stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spider web
of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels
of human achievement and artistry. But how
did medieval builders reach such spectacular
heights? Consuming the labor of entire
towns, sometimes taking a hundred years to
build, these architectural marvels were crafted
from just hand tools and stone. Many now
teeter on the brink of catastrophic collapse.
“The Most Dangerous Man in
America: Daniel Ellsberg and
the Pentagon Papers”
Tuesday, October 5, 9pm
Why would a dedicated Cold Warrior throw
away his career and his friends, and risk life
in prison for a chance to help end the Vietnam
War? In 1971, Daniel Ellsberg, a leading
military planner, concluded that America’s
role in the war was based on decades of lies.
He leaked the Pentagon Papers, 7,000 pages
of top-secret documents, to The New York
Times, a daring act of conscience that led to
Watergate, President Nixon’s resignation and
the end of the Vietnam War.
AMERICAN SONGBOOK
Wednesdays, 8pm
“Putting on the Tailfins” –
October 6
This episode focuses on the 1950s and 1960s,
when the Great American Songbook competed
with new forms like rock ‘n’ roll and
rhythm & blues. Viewers learn how iconic
singers like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole
and Rosemary Clooney kept the Songbook
alive by reinventing pop standards of the
1930s and 1940s.
“Best Band in the Land” –
October 13
The second episode examines how
popular songs provided emotional solace and
patriotic inspiration during World War II.
While preparing an original patriotic song,
Michael weaves in the history of 1940s big
bands, USO shows, V-disks, war bond rallies,
and the powerful role popular music played
in boosting morale.
Elbert Hubbard: An American Original
God in America
All programs are in both SD and HD unless
otherwise noted.
Tony-nominated performance. Originating
at England’s innovative Chichester Festival
Theatre, director Rupert Goold’s cinematic
re-interpretation of his stage production
relocates the bloody action to the underground
netherworld of a timeless and
nameless country. Tony-nominated Kate
Fleetwood stars as Lady Macbeth.
ELBERT HUBBARD: AN
AMERICAN ORIGINAL (HD only)
Thursday, October 7, 10pm
The life of Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) is
a story of love, art, passion and controversy
set against the backdrop of the Arts and
Crafts Movement at the turn of the 20th
century. To this “back-to-basics” artistic and
cultural movement, Hubbard contributed
his bold, ingenious talent and creative force.
As the flamboyant founder of the Roycroft
artisan community in East Aurora, New
York, Hubbard was an influential national
figure – an author, publisher, lecturer and
entrepreneur – who died as dramatically as
he lived.
GOD IN AMERICA
Monday – Wednesday, October
11-13, 9pm
How has religious belief shaped American
history? What role have religious ideas and
spiritual experience played in shaping the
social, political and cultural life of what has
become the world’s most religiously diverse
nation? God in America, a presentation of
American Experience and Frontline, will
explore the historical role of religion in the
public life of the United States. The six-hour
series interweaves documentary footage,
historical dramatization and interviews with
religious historians.
YELLOWSTONE: LAND TO LIFE
(HD)
Sunday, October 17, 10:30PM
Filmmaker John Grabowska presents a
lyrical interpretation of the sweeping
geologic story of Yellowstone, the world’s first
and most famous national park. Formation
of glaciers, mountain ranges and the gigantic
caldera of a supervolcano provide the saga
of this special place. A short concluding
film, “Yellowstone’s Cascade Corner,”
features the portion of Yellowstone
extending across the southwestern border of
Montana into Idaho.
WE SHALL REMAIN: AMERICAN
EXPERIENCE
Mondays, 9pm
Part 1 “After the Mayflower” –
October 18
In March of 1621, in what is now southeastern
Massachusetts, Massasoit, the
leading sachem of the Wampanoag, sat down
to negotiate with a ragged group of English
colonists. Hungry, dirty and sick, the paleskinned
foreigners were struggling to stay
alive; they were in desperate need of Native
help. Massasoit faced problems of his own.
The Wampanoag sachem calculated that a
tactical alliance with the foreigners would
provide a way to protect his people and hold
his enemies at bay.
Part 2 “Tecumseh’s Vision” –
October 25
In the spring of 1805, Tenskwatawa, a
Shawnee, fell into a trance so deep that those
around him believed he had died. When he
WASHING AWAY: AFTER THE
STORMS (HD only)
Sunday, October 24, 10:30pm
Five years after the devastation of Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita, Louisiana’s recovery is
far from over. Building on the 2006 documentary,
Washing Away, this new program
follows six survivors to reveal successes and
setbacks as their coastline and culture continue
to give way to the gulf and face disastrous
new threats. Emmy-winning and Academy
Award-nominated actress Patricia Clarkson,
a native of New Orleans, narrates.
FORT NIAGARA: THE
STRUGGLE FOR A CONTINENT
Monday, October 25, 10:30pm
For more than 150 years, Fort Niagara
protected the strategic point at the mouth of
the Niagara River in Youngstown, New York.
Four nations struggled to conquer it and
thus control that critical water artery. This
program explores the story of the longstanding
national landmark. Through rare
archival materials, expert commentaries,
high-definition videography and reenactments,
viewers can experience the
history of Fort Niagara from its beginnings
through modern times.
SECRETS OF THE DEAD
“Herculaneum Uncovered”
Wednesday, October 27, 8pm
Just a few miles from fabled Pompeii is
Herculaneum, another city buried and
frozen in time by the eruption of Mt.
Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Geo-archeologists are
chipping away at the soft rock, revealing that
this city, unlike Pompeii, was not suffocated
by falling ash. Rather, it was engulfed by
blistering pyroclastic flows that instantly
caused muscles to contract, skin to vaporize
and heads to explode.
OBJECTS AND MEMORY
(HD only)
Thursday, October 28, 10pm
Objects and Memory examines the
response to items recovered or offered
after 9/11 and other national tragedies. Why
do people value objects? What is it about a
piece of paper, a chunk of metal or a small
coin that provokes such powerful memories?
Without the objects, the stories would lack
vibrancy; without the stories, the objects
would lack significance.
A CEMETARY SPECIAL (HD)
Friday, October 29, 10pm
This celebration of cemeteries across
America takes an unusual and informative
look at graves, monuments, family plots,
sculpture and the way cemeteries interconnect
with many aspects of modern
American culture. Traveling from Key West
to central Alaska, the program features
examples of burial grounds as special sites
where history and art are preserved and
where old and new traditions often combine
in fascinating ways.
Leave a Legacy
Bonita Kugle died in 2008.
Today, she will help to bring Sesame Street
to the many thousands of children watching
WNIT.
Bonita was a faithful fan of WNIT Public
Television for more than 20 years and she
had a passion for children. Even though she
didn’t have children of her own, she cared
deeply about what children watched daily
on television and wanted to make sure there
would be wholesome, educational programs
for them to enjoy. So, Bonita left us a bequest
in her will.
Today her memory lives on every time a child watches Sesame
Street, Curious George, Sid the Science Kid and many other
quality children’s programs on WNIT.
We hope you will also make a commitment to
leave as your lasting legacy the gift of public
television by making provisions to include
WNIT in your will through insurance,
property or cash.
Make your mark by letting your remarkable
life live on by sending us your declaration
of intent. Go to wnit.org and click on
Planned Giving under “Support” for more
information.
The new
is here.
A new era in local television has
begun. Watch future issues of
the WNIT Planner for details on
how our relocation will positively
impact the Michiana Community.
You can help support WNIT with your tax-deductible
your vehicle — whether it runs or not! It’s easy
to do. Just call our representatives directly at the
Center for Car Donations toll-free hotline at 877-
New Seasons for Local Programs
Economic Outlook begins its
sixth season on September 10.
Hosted by Phil D’Amico and
produced by Brenda Bowyer,
Economic Outlook is a stimulating
30-minute program that
reaches out to the business and
educational decision-makers who
explore the risks and opportunities
at work in today’s markets.
Economic Outlook discusses issues around economic
growth, the impact of education on economic development,
key industry sectors, the impact of trade on
employment, and a host of related issues.
Host Phil D’Amico is the Director of Business Growth
at the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County. He
earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from
West Virginia University, as well as a bachelor’s degree
in Communications from Temple University. Phil has
also completed certificate programs in Executive Management
from both the University of Notre Dame and
Northwestern University.
Economic Outlook airs on Fridays at 8:30pm and reairs
the following Sunday at 12:30pm.
Ask An Expert
Ask An Expert begins its ninth season on September 9 with
a panel of medical specialists from Elkhart General Hospital.
Ask An Expert connects local health, home repair,
education and legal professionals to our viewers, who are
invited to call in questions and comments during this live,
one-hour program.
Host Gary Sieber has for many years taught Broadcast
Journalism, specializing in News Writing, Ethics and Law
as an Adjunct Instructor in Film, Television and Theatre at
the University of Notre Dame. In addition, he has managed
FCC regulatory and First Amendment legal matters for
WNDU, and has twice won finalist awards from the prestigious
New York Festivals for his documentary writing.
As producer Todd Neely recently stated, “The new season of
Ask An Expert will add some exciting changes. Using the
Internet, we’ll provide more ways to connect with the
experts, give our audience opportunities to share their experiences
and add a few other surprises. We’re excited to have
Gary Sieber return as host, and look forward to serving the
community as we dive in deep to explore important topics.”
Politically Speaking
Politically
Speaking is
WNIT’s longest
running locallyproduced
program, originally airing in 1988. This season,
Producer Brenda Bowyer promises an exciting special
addition, as WNIT partners with the American Democracy
project at Indiana University South Bend to host a
primetime debate on October 27 for the Indiana Third
Congressional District.
In its regular time slot of Sundays at 2pm, Host Jim Wensits
brings legislators and viewers together and interviews
important regional- and state-elected officials and spotlights
the actions of the Indiana General Assembly. Wensits
served for more than 41 years covering local government
and politics at the South Bend Tribune. A graduate of
Purdue University, he also was a member of the Tribune’s
Editorial Board, with the position of Associate Editor, from
1992 to 2003.
WNIT’s two other local productions, Dinner and A Book
and Outdoor Elements will begin their respective seasons
in January, 2011.
Spotlight
Jane Warner
WNIT shines the spotlight on Charter Board Director Jane Warner, who worked tirelessly to
help establish WNIT Public Television. In 1968, a group of local citizens met to form a new
kind of station, a public television station for Michiana. Jane’s spirit of creativity, energy
and great fun helped establish WNIT as the station it is today. With Jerry Hammes,
Ernestine Raclin, Dar Wiekamp and Arthur J. Decio, she took up the gauntlet and, with
talent and determination, helped develop the funds and foundation for WNIT.
Jane has served on the WNIT Board of Directors in many capacities. She helped sponsor
the station gala held respectively in 1999, 2004 and, most recently, in 2010. She also
hosted numerous station events, the last one as hostess of a Directors’ Circle event at the
South Bend Summit Club in December of 2005.
WNIT salutes the many talents of Jane Warner and thanks her for her many years of service
to help create WNIT and with it, a quality of life for Michiana.
Directors’
Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the
total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the
great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
