MAIMONIDES SCHOOL
SCHOLARSHIP ADBOOK
2006-2007/5767

One reason why Maimonides School honorees Myra Kraft and
Barry Shrage are such successful community leaders is their
affinity for members of the entire Jewish community—especially
young people. During a recent visit to the Mamonides campus
(see cover photos), they talked with students and learned about
their commitments, aspirations and activities—and watched the
annual Maccabiah unfolding on playing fields and in classrooms.
This book is dedicated to
MYRA KRAFT & BARRY SHRAGE,
with affection and respect.

In 1937, the door opened on a bold experiment in Jewish learning. Rabbi Dr. Joseph
Soloveitchik, l Z vf, founded Maimonides School to engage the hearts and teach the
minds of Jewish children. Its ambitious dual curriculum would pair proficiency in
Torah education with excellence in general studies, preparing students to contribute
to the modern world while invigorating their attachment to Judaism and a halachic
way of life. Its atmosphere would inspire boys and girls equally to a love of learning,
mitzvot, chesed, Am Yisrael, and Eretz Yisrael.
From its first class of six students, this vision has blossomed into an energetic
educational center of almost 600 students, learning together in Kindergarten through
Grade 12. Students from Greater Boston and beyond, and from a wide range of
religious backgrounds, are welcomed into a school community by teachers who reach
out to motivate and educate.
Student life begins with a full academic schedule and continues beyond the classroom
with stimulating clubs, sports and activities. Chesed and tzedakah efforts are part of
daily life, demonstrating students’ compassionate awareness of their relationship to
the wider world and their willingness to take action. Indeed, the values fostered by
this school community endure; Maimonides graduates have earned an enviable
reputation for leadership and accomplishment in every field of human endeavor.
For over six decades, they have brought the Rav's vision to life—Torah life, and
contemporary life.
Maimonides students are at home with intensive study, academic achievement and
schedules brimming with activity. More important, Maimonides students are at home
with halachic life, indelibly connected to Judaism, and dedicated to perpetuating the
sacred tradition. From the youngest to those on the eve of graduation, these are lives
shaped by head and heart, intellect and love. They are both outstanding students and
extraordinary people. We invite you to discover for yourself this unique treasure of
Jewish education in Boston, and share it with your children.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN & PRESIDENT
Over seven decades, Maimonides School has served as a wellspring of Jewish learning,
benefiting not only the school family but also Greater Boston's broader Jewish
community. The weekly lectures by our school's revered founder, Rabbi Dr. Joseph B.
Soloveitchik, zt"l, attracted a diverse and enthusiastic audience for many years. Today
Maimonides continues to thrive as a nucleus for adult education, Israel advocacy,
Torah culture, and myriad opportunities for chesed.
It is in the spirit of this tradition that Maimonides School honors the extraordinary
leaders of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Myra Kraft, Board Chair, and Barry
Shrage, President. Both honorees have been connected to Maimonides by family ties.
Both have a passionate commitment to strengthening Jewish education and
expanding its reach. And both share a vision of a Jewish renaissance, a new level of
involvement that is exemplified by the Maimonides experience.
When our honorees visited the school recently, they witnessed the magnificent
improvements that have invigorated campus life this year—the refurbished courtyard
with synthetic turf, the long-envisioned student center, the gleaming Sephardic beit
midrash, the beautified learning center. The creativity of our volunteer and professional
leaders and the generosity of our benefactors were most evident.
Impressive, yes, but the highlight of their visit—as one would expect—was the time
they spent in conversation with Maimonides School students. Boys and girls shared
accounts of their experiences at the school, their worldly pursuits outside of school,
their hopes for the future, and the challenges, comforts and confidence they feel as
Jews. Our community leaders received an indelible impression that the Jewish future
is in good hands.
Dedicated students, instructed and inspired by equally devoted teachers, have been
the hallmark of Maimonides School for three generations. They are connected by the
precious common denominator of the principles espoused by the Rav: The centrality
of Halacha. Equal educational opportunity for girls and boys. A visceral connection
to Medinat Yisrael. The importance of chesed to Jewish existence.
As the school community prepares to mark its 70th anniversary with a series of major
events, we invite all to join in celebrating this legacy. We will reflect on our school's
history, celebrate its strength today, and stride into a bright and exciting future.
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
An image from the cover of this year's Adbook was taken during our Middle and
Upper School Maccabiah that took place earlier this year. The two "teams" competing
that day were named aish and mayim, fire and water. A funny thing happened that
day when these two elements mixed: the result was ruach, generally translated as
"wind" but more importantly is also the term for "spirit."
"Ruach" could certainly be the theme of this year's academic and annual campaigns.
The school has been energized this year at all levels, and its spirit has been lifted to
new heights thanks to the hard work of so many remarkable people. In his first year
Rabbi Yair Altshuler has led the Middle and Upper School with passion, addressing
key points from our Annual Operating Plan and generating an excitement among the
students that is palpable, not only during the Maccabiah! Rabbi David Shapiro, in his
new role as Rosh Yeshiva, has been a source of inspiration and wisdom for our faculty
and students as critical issues are addressed on a daily basis.
Our volunteer leadership has thrown itself behind a wide range of amazing projects
that have yielded wonderful outcomes in our recruitment and admissions, our
facilities, and our educational programming. Committees that were formed this year
have introduced the participation of many talented volunteers, both new and old, and
have shown results that are not only significant today but will have long-lasting
impact on our school. Our fundraising efforts have reached unprecedented levels and
have been infused by the energy of caring solicitors and contributors, who have given
generously and with a supportive spirit.
And then there is Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP). Led by Myra Kraft and
Barry Shrage, CJP has lifted the spirits of our school and our entire community of
Jewish Day Schools in countless ways. The financial sustenance from the per capita
allocations is greater than ever, at a time we need it most. The Initiative for Day
School Excellence has funded resources and programs that have transformed our
educational community and have provided opportunities to help our teachers,
students, and administrators grow. The Special Education initiative has enabled a
progress and collaboration that is unlike almost anything of its kind in North
America. Maimonides School is grateful for the leadership of CJP and for the
commitment of Myra and Barry that has made all of this a reality.
The culmination of this year's campaign, the 2007 Gala is an event full of spirit and
warmth. This is not simply a result of its spring date, a major shift from past years of
mid-winter events that were not always blessed with the best weather conditions. This
is also a reflection of its Co-Chairs, Roni Pick and Debbie Gyenes, who have shaped
this year's event with creative insight and colorful perspective, combined with a
5

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (cont.)
passion for the school and love of this year's honorees. They were assisted by several
volunteers including Avi Goldberg, who led our auction efforts, and Andrew Wiener,
friend, parent and advisor who helps make all our events sparkle.
Without Mike Rosenberg and Michelle Zisow, I simply have no idea how we
could have done it all. Our supportive staff, including Jerry Blum, Arline
Tannenbaum, Lynn Surum, David Nahoumi and Merv Alge, do the daily work of
moving mountains to get the job done, and we all owe them thanks for doing
"whatever it takes."
This moment is also the perfect opportunity to recognize the leaders of our most
succesful Annual Campaign in our history. Many thanks are due our Tribute
Committee Co-Chairs, Michael Bohnen, Abe Levovitz and Cynthia Shulman. We
also salute our dozens of volunteer solicitors who attended phone-a-thons and
conducted hundreds of private calls and visits. We must offer our greatest gratitude to
Julie Feder and Debbie Swartz who put the pieces of this amazing campaign together
and drove the operation to its succesful end. And of course, we must recognize the
unending energy, effort and optimism of Naty Katz, our Institutional Advancement
Chair who simply never stops advancing our institution at quite literally every hour
of the day.
Finally, we celebrate the students, teachers, parents and volunteers that are the
lifeblood of our institution. Like our honorees on this special evening, your unique
roles and relentless efforts continue to inspire us all as we continue to carry out
our mission. Thank you for your care and commitment to our community and
our school.
Joshua Wolff
Executive Director
MYRA KRAFT & BARRY SHRAGE
Maimonides School teaches its students to embrace Judaism, show compassion and
kindness for Jews and all of society, embody chesed and midot, and demonstrate love
for the State of Israel.
Tonight's honorees—Barry Shrage, Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) President,
and Myra H. Kraft, CJP Board Chair—are exemplary role models for students. Barry
and Myra are dedicated to helping others, are committed to supporting Israel and
their daily actions are rooted in our rich Jewish tradition. They are extraordinary
leaders and visionaries; their accomplishments speak volumes about their perseverance
and commitment.
Just last month, Barry and Myra, along with CJP and Gillette Stadium, welcomed the
entire New England community to celebrate Israel. Nearly 10,000 people, young and
old, attended the festival and among the many performers and musicians, Barry and
Myra were thrilled to include members of the Maimonides Daglanim Flag Corps.
To say Myra is involved in philanthropic endeavors would be an understatement. Her
peers respect and admire her hands-on approach while working with nonprofits. In
addition to serving as Board Chair at CJP, Myra was the first woman Chair of the
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. She is dedicated to helping kids of all backgrounds
grow and learn. Myra is involved in the United Way; Brandeis University; The Boston
Foundation; and Facing History and Ourselves, among other institutions. The Kraft
family has supported Maimonides since its creation and Harry Kraft, Myra’s fatherin-law,
was a charter member of the institution. The entire Kraft family is delighted
to join Maimonides in celebrating its upcoming 70th anniversary.
Barry has been the President of CJP since 1987 and has worked tirelessly to revitalize
education in this community. Throughout his tenure at CJP, Jewish learning has been
a hallmark of Barry's personal vision for the community. Committed to the growing
interest in study and quest for spirituality, Barry helped pioneer the development of
Me'ah, a unique adult learning program that aims to bring universal Jewish literacy
to the Greater Boston Jewish community. And in 2004, CJP established Peerless
Excellence to create a new standard of education for Jewish day schools in Boston.
"The philosophy of the school always has been extremely important to me; the kids'
halachic perspective is influenced by the philosophy of the Rav," said Barry, whose two
children attended Maimonides. "Without this philosophy, the Boston Jewish
community would be much poorer."
MYRA KRAFT & BARRY SHRAGE (cont.)
Reaching out to the elderly, improving services for people in need and revitalizing
Jewish education for youth and adults are trademarks of Barry and Myra's lengthy
commitment to our community. They are dedicated to ensuring that the Jewish
community is welcoming, nurturing and rewarding for all. And at Maimonides, they
see their dreams come to fruition. The Project Shalom, established in a joint venture
between CJP and Maimonides, enables Maimonides seniors to go out into the
community and make a difference.
"These are great kids-interested in helping, interested in community, interested in
reaching out," says Myra. "They don't just learn about tikkun olam, they live tikkun
olam."
Like Myra, Barry is intrinsically connected to the Jewish education of our youth.
"Maimonides shows us that one can be Orthodox and engaged in the world," says
Barry. "This school works openly with the other arms of Judaism and is a huge
addition to the quality of Jewish life in Greater Boston."
In tribute to
Myra Kraft & Barry Shrage
for your paradigmatic leadership
From the unpublished transcript of an address by the Rav, zt”l,
to parents of Maimonides School students on June 23, 1968:
“We are indeed members of the human family...
concerned with the welfare of all--Jew and
non-Jew alike. We are committed to combat evil
in all its forms—be it economic, be it political,
be it poverty, be it tyranny, be it ignorance,
be it prejudice... We are called upon by
the Almighty to cooperate with society
at all levels: economic, social, political,
educational, cultural, etc.... At the same time,
we belong to a separate distinctive community,
dedicated to a rich tradition...”
The work ethic characterized in Bereishit 31:40
“Scorching heat often consumed me by day,
and frost by night; my eyes were deprived of sleep”
only begins to characterize
your devotion to Maimonides School.
The selfless dedication to one’s community
extolled in Mishnah Avot 2:2
“Let all those who occupy themselves with the affairs of
the community do so only for the sake of Heaven;
for the merit of their parents will sustain them,
and their righteousness will endure forever”
only hints at the central role
you and Tzippy have played
in our Brighton neigborhood.
And all this with equanimity, sensitivity and wisdom.
Now it is Medinat Yisrael’s turn to benefit from
your family’s inspirational presence.
ADBOOK SUPPLEMENT 2006-2007/5767
This journal is a supplement to the 2006-2007/5767 Maimonides School
Scholarship Adbook. The Adbook was distributed to everyone attending our
Annual Gala, held on June 10, 2007 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library
and Museum.
Almost 400 seniors, parents, teachers, friends and supporters celebrated the
educational partnership between Maimonides School and Combined Jewish
Philanthropies of Greater Boston (CJP) at the Gala. The highlight of the event was
recognition of the school's honorees, the leaders of CJP, Chairman Myra Kraft and
President Barry Shrage. They were introduced by a tribute video presentation.
Also, remarks were delivered by Michael Bohnen, long-time Boston Jewish
community leader, and Mrs. Kraft's husband Robert, owner of the New England
Patriots. The program included brief tributes to departing school administrators:
Rabbi Stuart Klammer, Elementary School Principal; Nancy Posner, Elementary
School General Studies Principal; and Joshua Wolff '89, Executive Director.
Also in the spotlight of the Annual Gala were the 42 members of the Class of 2007.
Each senior was introduced to open the formal program, and several of them
followed with individual roles. Rachel Epstein and Jonathan Miller, Student
Council co-presidents, paid tribute to teachers and administrators. Amy Tischler
and Margaret Wyschogrod described their semester of volunteer service under
Project Shalom and presented gifts to the honorees. Nate Jaret led the national
anthems and David Roth the Birkat HaMazon.
The Gala is the culmination of the school's Annual Campaign, and Mr. Wolff, who
served as master of ceremonies, announced that Maimonides is closing in on its
goal of $2 million. Other speakers were Jeffrey Swartz, chair of the Maimonides
School Board of Directors, Rabbi Yair Altshuler, Middle and Upper School
principal, and Ken Weinstein, Middle and Upper School General Studies
principal. Iris Frisch and Marc Epstein, co-chairs of the 70th Anniversary
Committee, unveiled upcoming events for Maimonides School's 70th anniversary.
The event began with an extended dinner reception, featuring Catering by
Andrew's spectacular buffet. Music at the entrance to the museum was provided
by the Maimonides Jazz Band. Co-chairing the Gala were Deborah Gyenes and
Roni Pick.

Congratulations and thanks to
Myra & Barry
