PW1: Changing Paradigms in Acute Kidney Injury: From Mechanisms to Management<br />

Tuesday, February 14 8:00am-5:30pm (includes lunch, AM & PM breaks)<br />

Acute Kidney Injury is a rapidly evolving area where several advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms<br />

and pathways of AKI and its effects on other organs. Recent identification of biomarkers has provided new tools and techniques<br />

to characterize this disorder, This pre-course will provide a comprehensive review of the most recent developments<br />

in the field and describe emerging knowledge from basic and translational research applicable to clinical care.<br />

HW1: Fundamentals of <strong>CRRT</strong><br />

This workshop offers an introduction to <strong>CRRT</strong> techniques and is developed to provide a core set of information on the principles<br />

and practice of <strong>CRRT</strong>. This workshop will cover the components and basic principles of continuous renal replacement<br />

therapy. The operating characteristics of <strong>CRRT</strong> techniques for solute and fluid management, drug management will be discussed<br />

along with the potential applications of these techniques. Requirements for developing a successful <strong>CRRT</strong> program<br />

and selecting machines will also be described.<br />

HW2: GAMBRO Hands-On Physician’s Workshop: Practical <strong>CRRT</strong> - The Nuts and Bolts<br />

Through case studies, lecture and Prismaflex System hands-on practice, this workshop will provide practical approaches<br />

to prescribing and delivering <strong>CRRT</strong> with Gambro’s leading <strong>CRRT</strong> system.<br />

HW3: Pediatric Hands-On Workshop<br />

This workshop will focus upon the practical aspects of care including clinical program development, discussion of various<br />

models of ICU and Nephrology medical nursing care and hands on machine setup and operation.<br />

HW4: Hemodynamic Monitoring and Use of Drugs<br />

Critically ill Patients require frequent assessments and monitoring of hemodynamic and respiratory parameters to optimize<br />

stability and guide ventilator support. Several techniques are now available and utilized to manage patients including<br />

devices to assess the microcirculation, volume responsiveness and cardiac performance. This workshop will cover the<br />

principles and strategies for hemodynamic and microcirculatory monitoring in critically ill patients.<br />

HW5: Essentials for Developing, Nurturing and Growing a <strong>CRRT</strong> Program<br />

Successful <strong>CRRT</strong> programs require careful planning, nurturing and ongoing monitoring for growth and effectiveness. This<br />

workshop will cover the key elements for building and enhancing a program. Topics to be covered include developing a<br />

multidisciplinary team, creating tool kits for training, assessments and monitoring effectiveness of the program, dealing<br />

with administration, financial considerations and strategies for program growth.<br />

HW6: Introduction to Critical Care Ultrasonography<br />

CCUS or critical care ultrasonography is an ultrasonography examination performed and interpreted by intensivist at the<br />

bedside to establish the diagnosis and guides procedures, locate a target organ or a disease specific condition. It serves as a<br />

complement to CXR, CT, MRI, Echo or other imaging modalities. This intro workshop is a 3.5 hour workshop that includes a<br />

1 hour intro lecture, 1 hour reviewing normal and abnormal images, and a 1.5 hour hands-on section. The components of this<br />

workshop are: abdominal (kidney, bladder, IVC and aorta); thoracic( lung and pleural space); vascular (vascular access and DVT).<br />
