Finland

The City of Tampere
Tampere is the largest inland city in Scandinavia, and

Tampere has four higher education institutions which work in close
collaboration with each other as well as the businesses of the Tampere
Region, which is one of the most rapidly developing regions in Finland.
Tampere is surrounded by Finland’s natural beauty. It is located between

TAMK is a multi-disciplinary university of applied sciences offering

There are 30 Bachelor’s degree programmes, and five of them, Environmental

Every year TAMK receives 400 foreign exchange students and trainees,
and also sends 400 students abroad for exchange studies and
practical training. In addition, there are over 200 full-time foreign
degree students from 60 countries.
The European Commission chose TAMK as one of the European Success
Stories due to TAMK´s unique features and an impressive range of
activities for internationalisation. TAMK was the only selected higher
education institution from Finland. The European Commission will
publish the Success Stories in 2010.

Hola!
I wanted to study in Finland!
I could also join different courses from varied fields: social
services, international cuisine, nursing, practical training
and voluntary work.
Compared with my home university, I am so glad to do
my Erasmus programme at TAMK: the organization is
great and efficient, people are polite with predisposition
to help all students. I have to thank for their perfection
gained in dealing with foreign students. They orientate
foreigners to the academic field and social activities to
integrate them into the Finnish culture as much as they
can.

TAMK offered a promising-looking cooperation programme

student crowd here brought me in every day contact with

The programme provides the student with skills in environmental
analysis, monitoring, management and technology with a
holistic approach to manage the environment and the world‘s natural
resources in sustainable ways. The core of studies is in lifecycle
thinking, quality issues and environmental impact assessment and
management of sustainable systems within public administration,
enterprises and industry. It is highly recommended that every student
spends at least a part of the compulsory practical training in international
tasks and takes part in international projects of the degree
programme.
Since the students will find their future jobs wherever environmental
issues are of paramount importance, a special emphasis is given to
developing students’ personal skills and qualities in problem solving,
management and attitudes, especially in public relations. The international
atmosphere will prepare the students for a career in the new
global economy.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the programme typically find jobs as specialists within
the industry, energy management, designing or assessing industrial
impacts and quality management in business life. They can also work
as environmental managers in enterprises or in local, regional or international
tasks within public administration and consulting.

Mwilumbwa Lynnet Kibbassa,
I joined TAMK in 2006, and I can say that
it has been the best thing to happen to
me so far. Coming to Finland was the
first time I travelled outside my country
Tanzania, and I did not know what to
expect apart from the cold weather.
The degree programme is well
arranged. It contains much more than
environmental studies, such as economics,
legislation and computer courses.
When it came to choosing my thesis topic
I decided to study the potential of solar
power in electricity production in Dar es
Salaam, Tanzania. I did this because Dar es
Salaam is my home town and it has faced
shortage of electricity for a long time. It is
a very tropical city and could thus depend
on solar power for electricity.
Studying in TAMK did not just help me
grow academically but it helped me grow
personally as well. The teachers were
really dedicated to us and ready to help at
any moment.”

The first year of studies offers a broad perspective on business
operations (e.g. accounting, marketing, organisation, logistics and
communication).
The second year of studies brings a deeper insight into international
companies. At this stage, students start to create their own career
path by choosing one of the four options:
› The Management Consulting Module specialisation option
concentrates on real consultative projects with external
clients.
› The Supply Chain Management Module focuses on
transportation and warehousing issues in connection with
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
› The Financial Management Module expands on business
control, corporate finance, and management control systems.
› The Marketing Module explores the dynamic environment
of marketing strategy and planning.
In the third year students go abroad for a semester at one of TAMK’s
160 partner universities worldwide. In addition, students spend a further
5 months abroad in practical training. Ideally, the employer will
also commission the Bachelor’s thesis – a project requiring students
to apply their knowledge to solve a specific problem for a company.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The programme prepares graduates for demanding jobs in the busi ness
world. Our graduates work e.g. in sales, finance, mar ket ing, custo mer
relations, logistics and management. Many also work as consultants
and entrepreneurs.

I was keen to improve my academic

The first two years provide a broad perspective on digital design,
production and business and skills in the selected specialisation field.
The third and fourth years consist of studies abroad, practical training,
the Bachelor’s thesis and free choice studies.
The areas of application include web design and services, games,
mobile media, multimedia, cross media and interactive installations.
Studying in the Media Programme is typically hands on, project based,
business oriented, international and most often conducted in co-operation
with partner companies.
Collaboration with the other BA programmes of the School of Art,
Music and Media is intense. The Media programme works also in close
cooperation with TAMK International Business programme and the
ProAcademy programme in entrepreneurship.
There are joint courses, and the students can enrich their studies by
choosing classes offered by the partner programmes.
The Media programme is located at TAMK Finlayson Campus in the
old Finlayson cotton mill, right in the heart of the City of Tampere,
surrounded by museums, theatres as well as new media, ICT and art
companies.

The graduated students have found work in positions of animator,
art director, concept designer, game artist, graphic designer, project
manager, producer, UI designer, web designer and web programmer.

programme seemed like the right place,

Degree Programme In Tourism
In the Degree Programme in Tourism students will gain
a wide special training in the different fields of tourism, focusing on
congress studies and business. The aim is to provide students with
abilities for working in demanding work tasks from customer services
all the way to managerial level in tourism companies and societies both
in Finland and abroad. The degree is comparable with the equivalent
degrees in other EU countries.
The graduated students have the skills needed in the planning, practical
follow-up and development of tourism. In the career path, their titles
may be for example, a sales manager, marketing manager, reception
manager, resort manager, travelling secretary and manager and travelling
entrepreneur.
The degree programme consists of basic studies, professional studies,
which include practical training to enhance professional skills,
Bachelor’s thesis and elective studies.
The most important study modules and focus areas are basic studies
and professional studies, congress studies and business, leadership and
entrepreneurship, communication skills and tourism research, language
and cultural studies and practical training in Finland or abroad.
The language of instruction is English and the teaching methods are
lectures, seminars, workshops, project works, assignments made for
companies and company visits.

The degree programme is very

The core competences in nursing and health care include
knowledge and practical skills like observation skills, which include
the ability to analyse and interpret the gained information for sound
decision making in basic nursing as well as different specialised areas.
As experts in the nursing field, the Bachelors of Health Care implement
and develop nursing that promotes and maintains health,
prevents illnesses and improves the healing process. They act as
experts in multiprofessional work groups using their managerial skills.
The education enables the nurse to act flexibly in the changing work
environments of primary health care and specialised nursing sectors
as well as in private organisations and in the third sector.
On-the-job learning/clinical training (75 cr) is an essential part of the
professional studies and growth supported by the theoretical studies.
On-the-job learning takes place in different types of health care
settings. Hospitals and other clinical training places are required to
provide higher education level supervision during the clinical training.
Key contents of the degree programme are studies in basic nursing,
public health, women’s health, mental health, paediatric nursing,
perioperative nursing, gerontological nursing, and medical-surgical
nursing.
The studies are implemented using an investigative and critical work
approach. Students learn to produce practical information both for
professional use and to enhance the well-being of patients and their
significant others. The aim of the clinical training is to familiarise the
students with the different areas of nursing and health care in key
practical duties from the viewpoint of the professional studies. Part of
the studies may also be completed in international student exchange.
The degree is comparable with the equivalent degrees in other EU
countries. Bachelors of Health Care are authorised by National Supervisory
Authority for Welfare and Health.

Since I was 15 I knew I wanted to
become a nurse. I had not thought
about the question of where I would
study.
I come from Kenya. My neighbour’s
son who lives in Finland informed me
of an English nursing programme in
Finland. Since I came to Finland I have
had a liking for Tampere, and luckily
I was accepted to TAMK. I have not
regretted the decision I made!
The best part of my studies has been
the clinical trainings. I have received
a lot of nursing knowledge from
experienced teachers and nurses in the
field. I have learnt how to work with
different people.
In the near future I intend to graduate
and work for a year or two, and then
study more. Will I stay in Finland, go
back to Kenya or move somewhere
else, I do not know. I just think I am
fortunate to have many options.

How to apply?
Admission Criteria
TAMK University of Applied Sciences takes part in
the Joint Application System of degree programmes taught in English
(vieraskielisten koulutusohjelmien yhteishaku). The process is run in
cooperation with the National Board of Education (Opetushallitus) and
24 Finnish universities of applied sciences (UAS).
Through this application process, you may apply to a maximum of four
degree programmes conducted in English in these 24 Finnish UAS. You
may submit only one application, multiple applications will be disregarded.
Admission Criteria
1 COMPLETION OF EITHER:
› Finnish Matriculation Examination
› European Baccalaureate (EB)
› International Baccalaureate (IB)
› Reifeprüfung
› Finnish vocational qualification of three years or more in
duration
› A foreign degree or qualification which gives eligibility for higher
education in the awarding country
2 FLUENT ENGLISH
English language skills certificate in required level is mandatory from
applicants who are not citizens of an EU/EEA country. The certificate
must arrive to TAMK by 25 February 2011, 4:15 pm Finnish time (+2
GMT).
The applicant must provide documentary evidence that (s)he
has met one of the following minimum requirements:
› IELTS score academic level 6.0 or
› TOEFL score 550 paper-based test/ 79-80 internet -based test
› upper secondary level school education in English completed
in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia
or New Zealand or
› a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree completed in English in one
of the countries named in previous item or in one of the EU/
EEA countries.
Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. TOEFL
score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing
Service. TAMK’s TOEFL code is 0561.
3 BASIC FINNISH IN TAMK NURSING
The applicants of TAMK Nursing are required
to have a command of Finnish at basic level 2
(www.oph.fi/english › Mobility › Testing Language
Skills › Descriptions of skill levels). The
Finnish language skills are tested in the entrance
examination.
4 PRE-TASK IN TAMK MEDIA
If you apply for Media, you must also return the
pre-task to TAMK by 15 February 2011, 4:15
pm Finnish time (+2 GMT). The programme will
invite to the entrance exam 60 qualified applicants
whose pre-task has got best evaluations.
5 ENTRANCE EXAM
All UAS will hold entrance exams between 4 April
and 6 May 2011. The invitation letters will be
sent by post in mid-March 2011. (Read more

Please notice that Environmental Engineering
and International Business have their entrance
examinations in Tampere on the same day, Wed
27 April, 2011. If you are invited to both of them,
you are only able to attend one of them and therefore
you must decide which one you will attend.
There are no exceptions.
6 DISCRETIONARY ADMISSION
TAMK Environmental Engineering and Media use
Discretionary Admission (harkinnanvarainen
valinta): also applicants who do not have the
required educational background may be invited
to the entrance exam if the programme considers
them otherwise as qualified applicants. Applicants
without the required educational background
should contact the Admissions Office for further
instructions.

The application must be submitted online at
www.admissions.fi during the application period.
The online application will be available from 3 January to
15 February 2011, 4:15 pm Finnish time (+2 GMT).
1. Read more about the Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences
(UAS) and the degree programmes at www.admissions.fi and about
TAMK at www.tamk.fi/en.
2. Fill in the online application at www.admissions.fi between 3 January
and 15 February 2011, 4:15 pm Finnish time (+2 GMT). You
may fill in only one application and apply for a maximum of four degree
programmes at Finnish UAS. The order of preference is binding.
3. If you apply for Media, you must also return the pre-task to TAMK
by 15 February 2011, 4:15 pm Finnish time (+2 GMT). More information
at www.tamk.fi/media. Information about the pre-task will be
published on December 2010 also at www.tamk.fi/entranceexam.
4. If you apply with foreign educational certificates, you need to
deliver by post copies and official translations (with translator’s signature
and stamp) of relevant educational certificates by 25 February
2011, 4:15 pm Finnish time (+2 GMT). Postal stamp of 25 February
is not sufficient.
5. If you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country, you need to deliver by
post also the compulsory language test result in required level by 25
February 2011, 4:15 pm Finnish time (+2 GMT).

6. All UAS will hold entrance exams between
4 April and 6 May 2011. The invitation letters
will be sent by post in mid-March 2011. (Read more

results at the earliest on 30 May 2011 and the
latest on 19 July 2011.
8. If you are admitted, you need to return the
written confirmation to TAMK by 2 August 2011,

August is not sufficient.
9. Studies start in August (exact date to be
confirmed).

Entrance
Exams
Entrance Exams
All universities of applied sciences arrange entrance
examinations. All applicants who meet the admission criteria receive
invitation letters to the examinations (exception TAMK Media, see
below).
The maximum points awarded for the entrance examination is 100
points. The entrance examination results of those applicants who are
admitted on the basis of the total of points for school performance and
the entrance examination are automatically scaled down by 0.7.
The language test included in the entrance examination tests the applicant’s
knowledge of English language widely.
DEGREE PROGRAMME IN ENVIRONMENTAL
ENGINEERING
TAMK Environmental Engineering does not accept the exam results
of any other UAS. The programme will invite all qualified applicants
to attend the Environmental Engineering entrance exam to be held
in Tampere on 27 April 2011. TAMK Environmental Engineering
arranges the Entrance Exam 2011 abroad in cooperation with the
Finnish Network for International Programmes, FINNIPS. More
information about the countries can be found in www.tamk.fi/entranceexam
in December 2010.
The entrance exam consists of a written and an oral part. The points
of the entrance examination (max. 100 points) are based both on the
content of the answers and the quality of the applicant´s oral and written
skills in the English language. All parts of the exam will be based on
the book ’State of the World 2011’ to be published by Worldwatch
Institute in January 2011. All applicants are responsible for acquiring
the book by themselves (e.g. from www.worldwatch.org).
Applicants scoring less than 30 out of 100 points in
the entrance exam are not eligible for admission.
Entrance exams from the previous years are not
available.
DEGREE PROGRAMME IN
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
TAMK International Business arranges the Entrance
Exam 2011 in cooperation with the Finnish Network
for International Programmes, FINNIPS. Therefore,
all qualified applicants who have chosen TAMK
International Business as their first choice business
programme will be invited to attend the International
Business entrance exam to be held in Tampere on
27 April 2011. Information about the Entrance
Exams abroad can be found in www.tamk.fi/entranceexam
in December 2010.
Those qualified applicants who have chosen TAMK
International Business as their second, third or fourth
business programme will be invited by their first
choice business programme to attend their entrance
exam. TAMK International Business accepts the exam
results of the other UAS business programmes of the
same network.
The TAMK International Business entrance exam
consists of a written part (two essays, tasks of
applied mathematics and logic) and an interview.
The exam essays and interview will be based on

DEGREE PROGRAMME IN MEDIA
TAMK Media does not accept the exam results of any
other UAS. The programme will invite to the entrance
exam 60 qualified applicants whose pre-task sent to
TAMK by 15 Feb ruary 2011 has got best evaluations. The
instructions for the pre-task can be found at www.tamk.
fi/entranceexam in December 2010. The Media one-day
entrance exam will be held in Tampere on 3 and 4 May
2011.
The TAMK Media entrance exam consists of an assignment
prepared beforehand (to be announced with the invitation),
two tasks and an interview. The points of the entrance
examination (max. 100 points) are based both on the
tasks and assignment (60%) and the interview (40%). The
entrance exam will test the applicants’ motivation and suitability
for the field.
Applicants scoring less than 50 out of 100 points in the
entrance exam are not eligible for admission.
Entrance exams from the previous years are not available.
DEGREE PROGRAMME IN NURSING
TAMK Nursing does not accept the exam results of any
other UAS. The programme will invite all qualified applicants
to attend the one-day Nursing entrance exam to be
held in Tampere between 18 and 20 April 2011. It is not
possible to do the TAMK Nursing entrance exam abroad.
The exam consists of written parts, group discussion and an
interview. There is also a section with applied mathematical
tasks and logic in the exam. The applicants of TAMK Nursing
are required to have a command of Finnish in basic level 2

TAMK Tourism arranges the entrance exams in cooperation with
the other UAS in the same field of study. Therefore, all qualified
applicants who have chosen TAMK Tourism as their first choice in
the same field of study will be invited by letter to attend the Tourism
entrance exam to be held in Tampere on 28 April 2011. TAMK
Tourism arranges the Entrance Exam 2011 abroad in cooperation
with the Finnish Network for International Programmes, FINNIPS.

Those qualified applicants who have chosen TAMK Tourism as their
second, third or fourth programme will be invited by their first choice
programme in the same field of study to attend their entrance exam.

for each programme will be held will be published at www.tamk.fi/
entranceexam in December 2010.

Selection
SELECTION GROUP A
In each degree programme (see exception below), 50% of
students will be admitted from group A: applicants who have
completed Finnish upper secondary education or the Finnish
Matriculation examination, International Baccalaureate
or Reifeprüfung examination in Finland or have completed
European Baccalaureate examination. Applicants completing
their Matriculation or International Baccalaureate or
Reifeprüfung examinations in Finland in the spring of the year
of their application will also be admitted with this group.
Applicants who are applying on the basis of their upper
secondary school leaving certificate and the Finnish matriculation
examination certificate are awarded points for three
grades on their matriculation examination certificate:
mother tongue, English, and the best of either general studies
or mathematics. When applying to a study programme
in the field of technology applicants are awarded points for
three grades on their matriculation examination certificate:
mother tongue, English and the best of mathematics, general
studies chemistry or general studies physics.
Candidates for the matriculation examination apply with
their latest upper secondary school certificate. The UAS
will receive results of the matriculation examination directly
from the Finnish Matriculation Examination Board.
Total admission points (max. 100 points) are based on the
result of the entrance exam (max. 70 points) and points
awarded for educational certificates (max. 30 points).

SELECTION GROUP B
In each degree programme (see exception below), 50% of
the students will be admitted from group B: applicants with
Finnish vocational degrees, or whose eligibility to apply is
a foreign degree or qualification, and are not mentioned
in selection group A, apply to UAS studies solely on the
basis of points awarded for the entrance examination. The
admission of those completing a European Baccalaureate
examination in the spring of their year of application is also
based only on this method.
The maximum entrance examination points total is 100.
EXCEPTIONS IN FINAL SELECTION
TAMK International Business selects all its students from
one queue in order of highest scores in selection groups
A and B.
SELECTION BETWEEN APPLICANTS WITH
EQUAL ADMISSION POINTS
In cases of a tie in admission points, applicants are ranked
on the following basis:
1. order of preference of the options
2. result of the entrance exam
3. grade point average in all subjects
4. points awarded for school performance
If these bases cannot solve the order of applicants with
the equal points, the register will draw lots automatically.

Student
Life
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Finland is about the same
as in other EU countries. Remember that with a student
card you´ll get meals and other services at a student price
in your institution, and reductions, for example, for transport,
museums and various cultural events and recreational
activities.
International degree or exchange students do not have to
pay tuition fees. However, students have to pay for their
study materials themselves as well as their accommodation
and other living expenses and travel costs.
The total monthly expenditure of single students averages
around 600-700 €, which does not include the expenses for
the possible leisure activities.
For non-EU/EEA-citizens: In order to get the residence
permit, a student must provide an evidence of his/her financial
situation to the Finnish Immigration Service (disposable funds
at least 500 euros a month or 6000 euros for a year). Students
must also attach details of their comprehensive health insurance
cover to their residence permit application.

STUDENT DISCOUNTS
Students are eligible for a number of discounts in Finland.
In order to get the discount, you must have a
valid Finnish student card from TAMK Students’ Union

CANTEENS
Students are entitled to a discount in all university canteens.
All TAMK students receive the discount from
the meal by showing a valid Finnish student card or

LIBRARY AND INTERNET
All students have a right to use the TAMK library freely
with a library card. Course books may be borrowed for
a limited period at a time.
The TAMK library resources contain about 100,000
books, 650 journals, audiovisual material, final theses
and 15,000 sheet music titles. The library has thousands
of electronic books and journals, reference books and
sheet music titles.
All institutions of higher education provide their student
access to the internet. Computers connected to the
internet are available at university libraries and computer
centres.
