For authentic reproduction of life-size liveries in model form, it is essential that careful reference is made to photographic evidence of the loco you are trying to recreate. Whilst detailed instructions are usually provided to motive power depot painting staff, it is not unusual for variations to be outshopped which, to say the least, do not conform to said instructions. Fox Transfers are unable to provide details other than those contained in general specifications for each livery. Much evidence will be gained from trawling the internet and the thousands of publications which have appeared over the years. And remember: all vehicles have two sides! CRANBERRY GRAPHICS Prices The price codes provided in this catalogue (after each item) should be read with the product price code list provided with this publication and are effective immediately. They supersede all previous prices. Fox Descriptive Price Lists are published normally every six months, sometimes more frequently if the volume of new releases warrants this. Please check with us that you are using the current Descriptive Price List. Our ‘price year’ is from 1 August until 31 July. Orders paid by cheque or Postal Order and not carrying the correct amount will be returned. Safety Fox Etched Products comprise elements with extremely sharp edges and corners. They are not toys and are unsuitable for use by children. Ancillary Plates The word ‘crest’ or ‘plaque’ or ‘motif’ where shown in the listings after a locomotive’s name indicates the inclusion of one or more pairs of ancillary plates appropriate to the specific format. These plates may comprise some form of heraldic device, or logo, motif or other graphic symbol or typographic addendum. Packaging Numbers Some plate sets may be supplied with a different running or TOPS numberset on the mounting card from that which was ordered. This will only occur when the plates are identical to those ordered and indicates that the plates concerned were fitted to more than one locomotive at one period or another. All our Modern Image plates are filed under the TOPS (Total Operations Processing System) sequences - with very few exceptions - and experience shows that this is the best method. What you get The plates detailed in this catalogue are made from fine grade brass and/or stainless steel, and the designs are etched to shape and size. Brass plates are treated against tarnishing. Where applicable, the transfers which adorn the plates are handprinted and hand applied. Each colour is separately applied by hand in both transfer and paint formats. Future Products The Fox range of etched plates has been in preparation since the early 1990s. Those items which are not listed here are likely to be produced in the future if deemed viable. Please telephone for individual availability. Despatch Times Fox etched plates are produced in small quantities and finished by hand, as mentioned above. Owing to the huge range of different plates and the colour variants and formats in which many are available, it is impossible, impracticable and uneconomic to maintain large readyto-go stocks of any given item. Some plates take up to an hour to finish, spread over four or five days. Please bear this in mind before ordering. Exhibitions Since February 2007 we have been unable to take our stand to exhibitions. This has been caused by ill-health, economics, the dramatically increased size of our range and the necessity of maintaining our service to all our customers, worldwide. 4 British Railways Titled Train Headboards These headboards, with their raised beading and lettering in Gill Sans typeface to match the then current BR house style, were introduced by British Railways in the early 1950s. The size of the lettering varied according to the length of the title, often with the word ‘THE’ in larger lettering. There was a number of standard board sizes and shapes common to most regions, although the Southern was unique in its use of large rectangular boards with radiused corners. According to our information, some titles were displayed concurrently on boards of different design. The background colour of all boards was originally black, although the Southern changed to green almost immediately after their introduction. By the mid-1950s, local variations began to appear on other regions, with London Midland and some Western boards in red. The Eastern’s preference was for black, although Kings Cross Top Shed opted for dark (similar to Oxford) blue. The Scottish Region’s preference was for light blue. With many boards still sporting black grounds right up to the end of the steam era, the logic behind the application of colours is difficult to ascertain. Long-distance interregional expresses would change locos once and sometimes twice during the course of their journey. Usually, headboards were not ‘swapped’: the replacement loco would back onto the train with its own headboard, supplied by the local shed and therefore finished in its preferred colour, or simply a suitable and available board, already in place. The Western Region introduced its own, more ornate, headboards with cream backgrounds in the mid 1950s, (the Fox listing of these is shown after the section on ‘plain’ headboards). The original headboards were still frequently used across the country and, in the 1960s, were often carried by Warships and Westerns on the Western Region, Deltics on the Eastern Region and Peaks on the Midland Region which had supplanted their mainline steam predecessors on the express workings. On the London Midland, the ‘Condor’ freight working, shared by both steam and diesel locos, sported a unique design, with stencil design lettering tapered from top to bottom and ground split vertically into red and blue halves on an otherwise standard format board. The ‘Condor’ headboard is just one of a huge number of eyecatching designs available in 4mm scale (for ‘00’ gauge) from Fox. These are supplied etched-toshape in stainless steel and are readypainted as detailed below. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO STATE THE BACKGROUND COLOUR YOU REQUIRE WHEN YOU ORDER! We recommend the use of a small ball of Blu-Tac ® fixed to the back of each headboard. This method of attachment means that headboards can be swapped around from one locomotive to another.
