For authentic reproduction of life-size
liveries in model form, it is essential that
careful reference is made to photographic
evidence of the loco you are trying to recreate.
Whilst detailed instructions are
usually provided to motive power depot
painting staff, it is not unusual for
variations to be outshopped which, to say
the least, do not conform to said
instructions.
Fox Transfers are unable to provide details
other than those contained in general
specifications for each livery. Much
evidence will be gained from trawling the
internet and the thousands of publications
which have appeared over the years. And
remember: all vehicles have two sides!
Prices
The price codes provided in this catalogue
(after each item) should be read with the
product price code list provided with this
publication and are effective immediately.
They supersede all previous prices. Fox
Descriptive Price Lists are published
normally every six months, sometimes
more frequently if the volume of new
releases warrants this. Please check with
us that you are using the current
Descriptive Price List. Our ‘price year’ is
from 1 August until 31 July.
Orders paid by cheque or Postal Order and
not carrying the correct amount will be
returned.
Safety
Fox Etched Products comprise elements
with extremely sharp edges and corners.
They are not toys and are unsuitable for
use by children.
Ancillary Plates
The word ‘crest’ or ‘plaque’ or ‘motif’
where shown in the listings after a
locomotive’s name indicates the inclusion
of one or more pairs of ancillary plates
appropriate to the specific format. These
plates may comprise some form of heraldic
device, or logo, motif or other graphic
symbol or typographic addendum.
Packaging Numbers
Some plate sets may be supplied with a
different running or TOPS numberset on
the mounting card from that which was
ordered. This will only occur when the
plates are identical to those ordered and
indicates that the plates concerned were
fitted to more than one locomotive at one
period or another. All our Modern Image
plates are filed under the TOPS (Total
Operations Processing System) sequences -
with very few exceptions - and experience
shows that this is the best method.
What you get
The plates detailed in this catalogue are
made from fine grade brass and/or
stainless steel, and the designs are etched
to shape and size. Brass plates are treated
against tarnishing. Where applicable, the
transfers which adorn the plates are handprinted
and hand applied. Each colour is
separately applied by hand in both
transfer and paint formats.
Future Products
The Fox range of etched plates has been in
preparation since the early 1990s. Those
items which are not listed here are likely to
be produced in the future if deemed
viable. Please telephone for individual
availability.
Despatch Times
Fox etched plates are produced in small
quantities and finished by hand, as
mentioned above. Owing to the huge
range of different plates and the colour
variants and formats in which many are
available, it is impossible, impracticable
and uneconomic to maintain large readyto-go
stocks of any given item.
Some plates take up to an hour to finish,
spread over four or five days. Please bear
this in mind before ordering.
FOR THESE REASONS, THERE MAY BE A
DELAY IN THE PREPARATION AND DESPATCH
OF YOUR SELECTED PLATES. WE SHALL TRY
TO ADVISE YOU OF ANY LIKELY DELAY
WHERE APPLICABLE AND THE ANTICIPATED
DESPATCH DATE.
Exhibitions
Since February 2007 we have been unable
to take our stand to exhibitions. This has
been caused by ill-health, economics, the
dramatically increased size of our range
and the necessity of maintaining our
service to all our customers, worldwide.
Errors and omissions
excepted
We have spent a great deal of time and
care compiling this list. The information
comes from a huge range of sources and
we cannot guarantee that all of the detail
is correct. If you are aware of any glaring
errors or of any significant omissions to
details of existing plates, please do let us
know.
British Railways
Titled Train Headboards
These headboards, with their raised
beading and lettering in Gill Sans typeface
to match the then current BR house style,
were introduced by British Railways in the
early 1950s. The size of the lettering varied
according to the length of the title, often
with the word ‘THE’ in larger lettering.
There was a number of standard board
sizes and shapes common to most regions,
although the Southern was unique in its
use of large rectangular boards with
radiused corners. According to our
information, some titles were displayed
concurrently on boards of different design.
The background colour of all boards was
originally black, although the Southern
changed to green almost immediately
after their introduction. By the mid-1950s,
local variations began to appear on other
regions, with London Midland and some
Western boards in red. The Eastern’s
preference was for black, although Kings
Cross Top Shed opted for dark (similar to
Oxford) blue. The Scottish Region’s
preference was for light blue. With many
boards still sporting black grounds right
up to the end of the steam era, the logic
behind the application of colours is
difficult to ascertain. Long-distance interregional
expresses would change locos
once and sometimes twice during the
course of their journey. Usually,
headboards were not ‘swapped’: the
replacement loco would back onto the
train with its own headboard, supplied by
the local shed and therefore finished in its
preferred colour, or simply a suitable and
available board, already in place.
The Western Region introduced its own,
more ornate, headboards with cream
backgrounds in the mid 1950s, (the Fox
listing of these is shown after the section
on ‘plain’ headboards). The original
headboards were still frequently used
across the country and, in the 1960s, were
often carried by Warships and Westerns on
the Western Region, Deltics on the Eastern
Region and Peaks on the Midland Region
which had supplanted their mainline
steam predecessors on the express
workings. On the London Midland, the
‘Condor’ freight working, shared by both
steam and diesel locos, sported a unique
design, with stencil design lettering
tapered from top to bottom and ground
split vertically into red and blue halves on
an otherwise standard format board.
The ‘Condor’ headboard is just one of a
huge number of eyecatching designs
available in 4mm scale (for ‘00’ gauge)
from Fox. These are supplied etched-toshape
in stainless steel and are readypainted
as detailed below. PLEASE DON’T
FORGET TO STATE THE BACKGROUND
COLOUR YOU REQUIRE WHEN YOU ORDER!
We recommend the use of a small ball of
Blu-Tac ® fixed to the back of each
headboard. This method of attachment
means that headboards can be swapped
around from one locomotive to another.
In the post-war heyday of the ocean liner,
British Railways Southern Region ran
special expresses to convey outbound
passengers from London Waterloo to
Southampton Docks, and to transport
inbound
direction.
voyagers in the opposite
We currently offer miniaturisations of no
less than twenty of the special train
headboards fitted to the incumbent
locomotives.
New! Coach Boards for 4mm/00
British Railways Era
Our first presentation in this brand-new
series actually puts the onus on you to do
some work! It’s our Do-It-Yourself set for
the creation of destination names which
we are unlikely to produce as standard
items.
Included in this set are sixteen stainless
steel destination boards primed, painted in
British Railways Western Region brown
and gloss-varnished to enable you to apply
the waterslide decals more easily and, if
you choose, remove them and replace with
a different train name or destination.
Also included is a sheet of Gill Bold Capitals
alphabet in white. These are reproductions
of the typeface used by British railways;
the transfers are, of course available
separately.
FEPCB4101FP : Fret of 16 coachboards finished in
BR Western Region brown, plus a
sheet of FRH 4035/001/ There are lots
of characters on each sheet - 60 ‘A’s
for instance - so your additional
requirements may not be too great :
037
FRH 4035/001 : 1 sheet coachboard alphabet in
The second set in this series is primarily for
the London Midland region but in post-
1956 maroon livery is also suitable for the
Eastern and Scottish regions. The
coachboards are presented exactly as those
above but in BR maroon finish.
FEPCB4201FP : Fret of 16 coachboards finished in
BR London Midland maroon, plus a
sheet of FRH 4035/001/ There are lots
Finally, we are pleased to offer the BR
Southern region version which, of course,
comprises coachboards finished in BR
Southern region green.
Class Listing
8
Diesel & Electric Locomotive
Nameplate Sets
Especially in the later years, British Rail’s
locomotive naming policy resulted in many
nameplates being transferred from engine to
engine, frequently between machines of
different classes. To compile a totally
authoritative list at this stage would be an
extremely time-consuming operation, and we
have decided that, rather than delay
publication of this list any further, we would
indulge in some characteristic British
compromise.
We offer our modern image nameplate listing
in two sections, as follows:
Our first listing is of locomotives, by class
and running number. Included are classes
such as the 60s which were all named in BR
days and which in privatisation have either
been re-named or de-named or, indeed, have
retained their BR-given names; as well as
those such as the Deltics, the Warships and
the Westerns the names of which remained
constant throughout their lives.
Our second listing is in alphabetical
sequence. This provides some, but by no
means all of the alternative running or TOPS
numbers which may have been allocated to
given machines.
We do not claim that either of these lists is
definitive or authoritative. There is still much
work to be carried out, both in extending the
scope and in the verification of numbers,
colours etc. But it is correct to the best of our
knowledge after having spent some two -
three years (on and off) in its compilation,
and given that demands for the listing forced
a deadline for publication which precluded
additional research. We welcome verified
corrections to anything we have published.
Where the name appears on the relative style
of plate in CAPITAL LETTERS, it is so shown in
the listing. Where it appears in Upper and
Lower Case Lettering, the same applies.
Where more than one running or TOPS
number is shown adjacent to a given name in
the listings, these numbers are not
necessarily shown in sequence of allocation.
As ever, it is necessary for you, the modeller,
to do your homework on these matters to
ensure that you are creating an accurate
miniature of your selected engine.
Details of crests, badges, plaques or other
subsidiary plates are now provided, again in
as full a manner as we have been able.
Generally speaking, the higher the price, the
more plaques or subsidiary plates, or the
more ornate the complete set. Only a
relatively small proportion carry these
plaques or plates.
As a footnote, you may be interested to
learn that, unlike some other manufacturers,
it is not our policy to delete any correct
nameplate set once it has been included in
our range.
At the risk of boring you to tears, we must
take this opportunity to stress our
previously-mentioned notes on availability of
etched plates.
All plates are produced in large sheet form,
with many different items on each sheet.
Only a small number of sheets are produced
in each batch. Demand for each set of plates
varies dramatically, and it is not always
possible, therefore, to supply customers’
requirements by return, even by swapping
plate masters from sheet to sheet. Add the
time taken to finish each set of plates by
hand, and you have some idea of why, from
time to time, we have to keep our valued
customers ‘on hold’: please try to state
acceptable alternatives in addition on your
order if at all possible.
Surprisingly, we are frequently asked
whether our prices include two
nameplates. The answer is YES : if the
prototype carried two nameplates, then
our replica set includes two. Train
headboards are only sold as ‘singles’
because each train usually only carried one
headboard. 50149 in Railfreight General
livery only carried one warship crest - but
a pair of nameplates, and that is what
comes in the set. Some locomotives carry
different nameplates on each side, eg
37411 carries a CAERPHILLY CASTLE plate
on one side, and a plate with the Welsh
translation CASTELL CAERFFILI on the
other. Ditto 37416 Sir Robert MacAlpine,
on the opposiste side of which is a plate
carrying his nickname Concrete Bob.
‘The Warships’:
Classes 41, 42 and 43
The ‘600 Series’ machines - Class 41 - were built by
North British in Glasgow, introduced in 1958/1959.
Of the ‘800 Series’, D800 - D832 and D866 - D870
were built in the British Railways (ex-GWR) works
at Swindon, and the intermediate batch, D833 -
D865 commissioned from North British.
The livery story comprises three principal periods:
Brunswick Green with pale grey-blue bodyside
stripe (from introduction); Maroon; Rail blue to
the end. In the mid-sixties, small yellow warning
panels were added to the ends, followed around
the turn of the decade by full yellow ends.
Running numbering in the ’green’ and ’maroon’
periods comprised the condensed style in white, -
with seriffed ’D’ prefixes, available from Fox on
sheet FRH4005 and FRH4005/4A plus FRH4005/4B,
the latter two packs giving fully-made-up
numbering for the 800 series. On repainting in Rail
Blue, these were changed to the ‘Rail’ typestyle,
the ‘D’ prefixes being removed after the end of
the steam era. This numbering is available from
Fox on sheet F4310.
BR motif application, generally speaking, was as
follows: Green period: Later BR steam totem, Fox
sheet FRH4002; Maroon period: BR coaching stock
roundel: Fox sheet FRH4011; blue period BR white
double arrows: Fox sheet F4300/2. Overhead live
wire warning flashes (both designs) may be
obtained on Fox sheet F4214, or early design only:
FRH4020. Data (traffic) panels come on sheet
F4360 (later) and F4360/2 (earlier design). Route
availability discs (as used on GWR/BR Western
Region steam locos) which were only affixed to a
few machines are included on sheets FRH4005/4A
and 4B as mentioned above.
All plates for these classes are in etched stainless
steel and include a pair of worksplates as
appropriate.
Class 47
This section includes several notable subgroups
of plates, viz The Royal Locos, the
Great Western 150 celebrations engines,
the Res (Rail express systems) squadron
and the early BR Western Region - allocated
machines. The latter were divided into two
sub-groups - those with names in sans-serif
capitals and those in seriffed capitals, and
both are listed in the first two sub-sections.
We also list the later incarnations of these
plates in terms of background colour and
loco TOPS number
Class 59/0 Foster Yeoman
The price code is shown in each case, and
should be cross-referenced to the sheet
provided with this listing or to subsequent lists
as mentioned in the introduction.
The plate sets for the first series of Class 59
engines are produced in stainless steel and
comprise pairs of nameplates,
numberplates, works plates and data
panels for 59001-59004. Works plates
were not cast for 59004.
59003 was ‘exported’ to Europe during
Foster Yeoman livery days and therefore
never carried plates with black ground.
59001 and 59005 have been re-liveried in
the Aggregate Industries scheme and the
plate sets are available now in AI blue. As
we go to press in early 2010, we have
produced sets in this colour in anticipation
