Message from the CEO Medical Care When YOU Need It – 24/7 Arecent event highlighted the incredible level of skill, dedication and commitment that exists with the staff at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. In rapid succession four serious accident victims presented directly to our Emergency Department in the early morning hours. The prompt and professional response from our staff was inspiring. The team, led by two marvelous in-house physicians, was assisted by other members of the medical staff, nurses, aides, technicians, unit coordinators, respiratory therapists, radiology technologist, laboratory technologists, environmental services, security, facilities, and many others. What most impressed me was the teamwork and professionalism that our staff displayed in providing an extremely high level of coordinated care. I would like to recognize and thank our staff, and to let our community know that we have a team of highly-skilled professionals available 24/7. Charlie Therrien, President & CEO Hospitalist Joins MCMH MCMH welcomes Hospitalist Stephen Ruda, DO, to the Medical Staff. Dr. Ruda comes to MCMH from Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, California. He received his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, and completed his residency and internship in Family Medicine at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California. Dr. Ruda is Board Certified in Family Medicine and has a strong interest in palliative care, intensive care and evidence-based medicine. He and his wife are excited to be back in Maine to be closer to family and to spend time hiking, biking and sailing. Hospitalist Stephen Ruda, DO A Hospitalist provides comprehensive medical care including diagnosis, treatment, and the performance of medical procedures to hospitalized patients. New Nurse Managers for Medical/Surgical Unit, Emergency Department Maine Coast Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the appointments of Daune Lord, RN, to the position of Nurse Manager for the Medical/Surgical Unit and Cameron Bird, RN, BSN, CCRN, to the position of Nurse Manager for the Emergency Department. 2
Trustee Spotlight Adin M.Tooker MCMH Ranked “Best in State” for Patient Experience The Maine Health Management Coalition released information on April 2, 2012, ranking Maine Coast Memorial Hospital as one of only two hospitals in the State in the “Best” category in Patient Experience according to data compiled by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). This score is based on direct feedback from our patients about their experience at our hospital. Among the items our patients rated were the communication and responsiveness of our doctors and nurses, how well the medical staff handled pain management, and the quality of the overall hospital environment. According to CEO Charlie Therrien, “We are extremely pleased to receive this top rating as it is the result of teamwork by the entire staff at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.” “During the six days I spent in the hospital, I was treated with such caring and respect. People treated me like family. I cannot say enough good things about this hospital and the staff who work there.” – Sandy Beal, MCMH Patient Adin Tooker shapes the keelson for a 19’ 2” double-ender yawl designed by Lain Oughtred. Adin Tooker embraces life. He is as likely to be found on a remote hiking trail as he is in his home workshop building furniture. Whenever and wherever you connect with him, you are drawn in by his quick-witted humor and sharp intuition, attributes that served him well as a young Army Lieutenant during the Vietnam War and throughout his career in financial services. “Relocating to Maine after retirement has been wonderful. I was not planning to get involved with a nonprofit board. However, I met several (MCMH) Trustees and realized I had skills and knowledge that would allow me to give back,” says Adin. “In my career I always had a hand in budgets, strategic planning, and information technology, and it has been most helpful to continue to utilize these skills in my role as a Trustee.” Adin began serving on the MCMH Board in 2007, and currently serves as the Vice Chair. “It’s been fascinating 3 because of the rapid changes taking place in healthcare across the U.S. There are many challenges, but I enjoy applying my skills and knowledge to ensure that the Hospital is best positioned to fulfill its mission in the community.” MCMH President & CEO, Charlie Therrien, appreciates Adin’s commitment, which includes multiple committee meetings and monthly Board meetings. “Adin is very intuitive and has the ability to ask the right questions from a Trustee perspective. He is extremely committed to assisting the organization in fulfilling its mission.” Adin and his wife, Heather, have lived at their seaside home in Brooksville, Maine, since 2000. Adin’s hobbies include gardening, hiking, and woodworking. He has committed himself to building a wooden yawl. The anticipated launch date is June 2013 for the purpose of introducing the grandchildren to the joy of sailing on Smith Cove and the Bagaduce River.
