Trusted Pediatric Care
Finding a pediatrician who is medically
accomplished and supports
your personal parenting style can be
daunting for new parents. Winter
Harbor residents and first-time parents,
Kevin and Dolora Conley,
remember how important this decision
was to them when they welcomed
their baby, Theo, in June
2011.
“I think we are the typical firsttime
parents who have lots of questions.
We chose Dr. Douglas Mac-
Gregor because he is patient with us,
informative, and we can tell that
Theo really likes him,” says Dolora.
Kevin adds, “I remember that on
Theo’s first well-baby checkup visit,
Dr. MacGregor talked to us about
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
He was great at explaining
the facts so we felt educated but not
fearful.”
Maine Coast Pediatrics offers
continuity of care for children of all
ages beginning with newborns. Parents
also receive additional support through the Infant
Family Support Program (IFSP). At the 2-week, 2-month
and 4-month well-baby checkups parents meet with the
Theo Conley gets personal attention from Dr. MacGregor.
IFSP Manager for the opportunity to ask questions about
their baby’s social and emotional development, and
munity. Dolora gratefully adds, “Mary Beth
(IFSP Manager) let me know that there is a
playgroup right in Prospect Harbor. It’s great
to connect with other moms, and Theo loves
to play with all the other kids.”
Summing up, Dolora states, “We are having
such a great experience. From the midwives
at Maine Coast Women Care to all the
staff who work in the Obstetrics Department
and now with Dr. MacGregor… they have all
Arecent event highlighted the incredible
level of skill, dedication and
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. In
rapid succession four serious accident
victims presented directly to our Emergency
Department in the early morning
hours. The prompt and professional
response from our staff was inspiring.
The team, led by two marvelous in-house
physicians, was assisted by other members
of the medical staff, nurses, aides,
technicians, unit coordinators, respiratory
therapists, radiology technologist, laboratory
technologists, environmental ser-
vices, security, facilities, and many
others.
What most impressed me was the
teamwork and professionalism that
our staff displayed in providing an
extremely high level of coordinated
care. I would like to recognize and
thank our staff, and to let our community
MCMH Ranked “Best in
State” for Patient Experience
The Maine Health Management
Coalition released information on
April 2, 2012, ranking Maine Coast
Memorial Hospital as one of only two
hospitals in the State in the “Best” category
in Patient Experience according
to data compiled by the Hospital Consumer
Assessment of Healthcare Providers
and Systems (HCAHPS).
This score is based on direct feedback
from our patients about their
experience at our hospital. Among the
items our patients rated were the communication
and responsiveness of our
doctors and nurses, how well the medical
staff handled pain management,
and the quality of the overall hospital
environment.
According to CEO Charlie Therrien,
“We are extremely pleased to
receive this top rating as it is the result
of teamwork by the entire staff at
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.”
“During the six days I spent in the
hospital, I was treated with such
caring and respect. People treated
me like family. I cannot say
enough good things about this
hospital and the staff who work
there.”
Adin Tooker shapes the keelson for a 19’ 2” double-ender yawl
designed by Lain Oughtred.
Adin Tooker embraces life.
He is as likely to be
found on a remote hiking trail
as he is in his home workshop
building furniture. Whenever
and wherever you connect
with him, you are drawn in by
his quick-witted humor and
sharp intuition, attributes that
served him well as a young
Army Lieutenant during the
Vietnam War and throughout
his career in financial services.
“Relocating to Maine after
retirement has been wonderful.
I was not planning to get
involved with a nonprofit
board. However, I met several
(MCMH) Trustees and realized
I had skills and knowledge
that would allow me to
give back,” says Adin. “In my
career I always had a hand in
budgets, strategic planning,
and information technology,
and it has been most helpful to
continue to utilize these skills
in my role as a Trustee.”
Adin began serving on the
MCMH Board in 2007, and
currently serves as the Vice
Chair. “It’s been fascinating
3
because of the rapid changes
taking place in healthcare
across the U.S. There are
many challenges, but I enjoy
applying my skills and knowledge
to ensure that the Hospital
is best positioned to fulfill
its mission in the community.”
MCMH President & CEO,
Charlie Therrien, appreciates
Adin’s commitment, which includes
multiple committee
meetings and monthly Board
meetings. “Adin is very intuitive
and has the ability to ask
the right questions from a
Trustee perspective. He is extremely
committed to assisting
the organization in fulfilling its
mission.”
Adin and his wife, Heather,
have lived at their seaside home in
Brooksville, Maine, since 2000.
Adin’s hobbies include gardening,
hiking, and woodworking. He has
committed himself to building a
wooden yawl. The anticipated
launch date is June 2013 for the
purpose of introducing the grandchildren
to the joy of sailing on
Smith Cove and the Bagaduce
River.

continuing challenges faced by
Maine hospitals such as state
budget cuts and rising costs associated
with uncompensated
healthcare. He also referenced
how Maine hospitals are working
with the State to develop
strategies for lowering costs and
Michael J. Mason, MD, FACS
EDEN SURGICAL ASSOCIATES
How did you decide to pursue a career as a physician?
A family friend who was a dermatologist encouraged me
to consider medical school after I completed a degree in biology
at Wake Forest University. Having grown up in Atlanta,
GA, I decided to return after being accepted to Emory University
School of Medicine. I gradually became more
focused on a career as a general surgeon.
You did your internship and residency at Maine
Medical Center in Portland. How did this
happen, given that you were in Atlanta?
It’s too hot in the south and I like to ski. I
applied for surgical residency in several states
including Utah, Vermont, and Maine. I was
matched with Maine Medical Center and lived in
Portland for 5 years while completing residency.
After learning that Dr. Hendricks was looking for
a partner, I traveled to Bar Harbor for the interview.
It was January 8, 1998, which just happened
to be the start of the Ice Storm. That was an unforgettable
trip, but I’ve been in Hancock County
ever since and enjoy practicing general surgery
here.
Please share more about what makes this so
enjoyable.
It’s rewarding work. Many of the patients
whom I see are dealing with cancer. It is a very
difficult time in their life, and if I can make a difference
for them – even a small one – then that
gives me satisfaction.
Eden Surgical Associates
What changes have you seen over the past 14
years, since you began practicing here in
Hancock County?
The population in the Ellsworth area has been
growing. Fortunately, the Hospital is expanding to
meet this growth. In 2002 MCMH opened the
newly constructed ICU and Surgical Center. A
few years ago, the new Emergency Center was
built and now we are starting the construction of
the Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care. The Hospital
has also increased the number of medical
staff, and it’s a pleasure working with this team of
professionals.
What do you like to do when you are away
from the office and operating room?
I have three children. Max (16) and Ellie (15)
attend MDI High School and Paige (13) is in the
7th grade at Mount Desert Elementary School.
Among the three of them, there are numerous
school and athletic events to attend, including soccer,
basketball, track, and gymnastics. When I
find a little time for myself, I love to get on the
trails at Acadia National Park either cycling or
running. I will be participating in the Bar Harbor
half marathon for the third time this fall.
