Maine Foundation approves $25,000 grant for Mary Dow Center Expansion Project The Davis Family Foundation of Yarmouth recently awarded Maine Coast Memorial Hospital a $25,000 grant for the Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care expansion project. The Mary Dow Center provides care to patients with cancer, osteoporosis, anemia, multiple sclerosis, immune deficiencies, and neurological diseases. More than $50,000 Raised for MCMH’s Breast Clinic The new Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care is projected to open in winter 2012. In March, members of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital’s Corporation attended a breakfast meeting with guest speaker David Winslow, Maine Hospital Association (MHA) Vice President of Financial Policy. Winslow commented on the continuing challenges faced by Maine hospitals such as state budget cuts and rising costs associated with uncompensated healthcare. He also referenced how Maine hospitals are working with the State to develop strategies for lowering costs and improving quality. Mr. Winslow noted that in 2011, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality rated Maine’s hospitals third-best in the country for quality of care. The more than 100 Corporators share an interest in local community healthcare, and provide guidance and expertise to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital’s Board of Directors. Photos courtesy Tom Starno Over 400 community members showed their support of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital by sponsoring and attending the 19th annual Chefs’ Gala sponsored by Camden National Bank and hosted by WLBZ News Center 2 team. This year’s proceeds will be used to make renovations to upgrade the breast clinic and for mammogram scholarships. 4
Michael J. Mason, MD, FACS EDEN SURGICAL ASSOCIATES How did you decide to pursue a career as a physician? A family friend who was a dermatologist encouraged me to consider medical school after I completed a degree in biology at Wake Forest University. Having grown up in Atlanta, GA, I decided to return after being accepted to Emory University School of Medicine. I gradually became more focused on a career as a general surgeon. You did your internship and residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland. How did this happen, given that you were in Atlanta? It’s too hot in the south and I like to ski. I applied for surgical residency in several states including Utah, Vermont, and Maine. I was matched with Maine Medical Center and lived in Portland for 5 years while completing residency. After learning that Dr. Hendricks was looking for a partner, I traveled to Bar Harbor for the interview. It was January 8, 1998, which just happened to be the start of the Ice Storm. That was an unforgettable trip, but I’ve been in Hancock County ever since and enjoy practicing general surgery here. Please share more about what makes this so enjoyable. It’s rewarding work. Many of the patients whom I see are dealing with cancer. It is a very difficult time in their life, and if I can make a difference for them – even a small one – then that gives me satisfaction. Eden Surgical Associates What changes have you seen over the past 14 years, since you began practicing here in Hancock County? The population in the Ellsworth area has been growing. Fortunately, the Hospital is expanding to meet this growth. In 2002 MCMH opened the newly constructed ICU and Surgical Center. A few years ago, the new Emergency Center was built and now we are starting the construction of the Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care. The Hospital has also increased the number of medical staff, and it’s a pleasure working with this team of professionals. What do you like to do when you are away from the office and operating room? I have three children. Max (16) and Ellie (15) attend MDI High School and Paige (13) is in the 7th grade at Mount Desert Elementary School. Among the three of them, there are numerous school and athletic events to attend, including soccer, basketball, track, and gymnastics. When I find a little time for myself, I love to get on the trails at Acadia National Park either cycling or running. I will be participating in the Bar Harbor half marathon for the third time this fall. { } * Dr. Mason specializes in general and vascular surgery at Eden Surgical Associates.
