2010/027/MS/NL SINGAPORE INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS CPD PROGRAMME
SYNOPSIS
For many years, we have all been on the pursuit of great innovations towards a better and more
comfortable living. Our robust activities have thus created a growing concern globally on the efforts
in preserving our resources and the environment for the future. There is now abundant scientific
evidence that our vigorous actions have caused much environmental harm such as green house
effect and global warming. As the saying goes, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we
borrowed it from our future.” Therefore there is a paradigm shift whereby efforts has been taken
from reorganizing living conditions, reappraising economic sectors, best practices at work, to
adjustments in individual lifestyles.
The acceptance of green and sustainability concept in the building and construction industry has
placed unprecedented pressure to have not only sustainable architecture designs but sustainable
building materials as well. Hence the topic of presentation – Steel Sustainability will focus on steel
application as a sustainable material and its advantages. Being recognized as one of the world’s
most recycled material, steel is a definite preferred material towards sustainable buildings.
The Sustainable Built Environment will focus on:
Raw Material Extraction
Manufacturing Use
End-of-Life Recycling
