THE 2006 ST STANISLAUS COLLEGE RUGBY SEASON REPORT.
This season saw a significant improvement in match performance across the entire rugby program. Not
only were there a number of premierships won, but most teams were premiership contenders. This
season saw our U13 age group be very successful and dominant in all matches played, particularly the
13A team who were undefeated through the entire season, this includes the GPS/CAS trial match
fixtures. This is certainly a record for Stannies U13 teams.
The U14 age group made dramatic improvement. This age group suffered many heavy defeats in 2005,
but this year all teams became ISA premiership contenders as the season progressed. If we look at the
14A team for example, in 2005 as the 13A team they won 3 matches, lost 8 and drew 1 match. This
season the 14A team won 7 matches, lost 3 and were placed 3 rd in the ISA. A fabulous improvement and
well done to the players and coaches alike.
This year we increased the numbers of U15 teams by incorporating a D team. This extra team added to
the player depth in this age group. All teams were again competitive and premiership contenders.
This year’s U16 age group was a particularly strong bunch of boys. Well done to the 16A team who for
the first time as an age group won the ISA Premiership. This was achieved even after a number of
players were elevated to the 1 st XV.
A significant addition to the program this season was Mr Brad McCormick as the Referees Cocoordinator.
Mr McCormack has done a sterling job in educating and accrediting more student referees
and adult referees. Furthermore, he has increased to number of adult referees which is an area where
Stannies Rugby has struggled in recent years.
Coach Education.
Stannies considers the education of it’s coaches as being very important in the process of educating our
boys in the ways of rugby. This year the College hosted the 3 separate coach education sessions. These
were the NSWRU run Foundations Level 1 Course, the Smart Rugby Course for all Central West
coaches, along with a National Talent Scheme Seminar run by the High Performance Unit of the ARU.
Our coaches continue to gain and renew their coaching qualifications.
Waratahs v Western Force Rugby Weekend 22 nd , 23 rd & 24 th September.
This year the NSW Waratahs decided to play their Australian Provincial Championship match at
Carrington Park, Bathurst. Stannies was heavily involved in this weekend in a number of capacities. 18
Senior boys acted as Try Rugby Coaches for the NSWRU by coaching children between the ages of 6 to
12 in the basics of the game at Morse Park on the Saturday morning. Other boys were involved in touch
judging the Inaugural David Lyons Schoolboy Tens Tournament while others were ball boys for the
entire day culminating with the Waratahs v Force match at the end of the day. We also had an opens
team competing in the Tens Tournament which took place during the Saturday morning. Our boys
defeated Kinross Wollaroi School in the Final to take the title.
Physiotherapy.
Thank you for the continued support of Marty Roebuck & Tom Roberts from Bathurst Physiotherapy
and Sports Injury Clinic this season. We are very fortunate to have a physiotherapist was at all games to
look after our boys. A further thank you is extended to the matrons for their efforts during the season,
particularly Mrs. Kathy Hamilton who is often at all matches both home and away.
This year saw a dramatic decrease in injuries sustained by the 1 st & 2 nd XV teams. This can be attributed
to the following procedures being implemented:
a) Screening of the 1 st & 2 nd XV development squad during term 4 2005 to identify physical
weaknesses and problem areas of players.
b) Individualised strength & conditioning programs for all boys based upon their position and the
screening results.
c) High expectations placed upon players to attend all strength & conditioning sessions.
d) The recording of all injuries sustained.
e) Effective rehabilitation of injured players done in conjunction with Marty and John.
The following results were recorded:
1) 36% of players diagnosed with a physical weakness were injured in that area.
2) 64% of players diagnosed with a physical weakness were not injured in that area.
3) 76% decrease in the incidence of shoulder injuries since 2004.
4) 55% decrease in the incidence of total injuries sustained by players since 2005.
These results are proof that by players being committed to the College’s Strength & Conditioning
Program, the probability that they will get injured is dramatically reduced. Furthermore, there is a
greater probability that players and their team will perform successfully during the season.
4 Nations Tour.
Since term 4 2005 the College has been involved in the organization of a 1 st & 2 nd XV Development
squad tour of Ireland, Wales, England & France in December 2006. There was a number of fundraising
activities undertaken throughout the season led by a Fundraising Committee consisting of a bunch of
dedicated parents.
2

The main fundraising event was the Rugby Dinner. The guest speakers where Bob Dwyer (the 1991
World Cup Wining Coach) and Laurie Fisher (Current Brumbies Head Coach). An enjoyable time was
had by all and a significant amount of money was raised for the tour.
The following boys were selected to be a part of the touring squad:
