short course with lakes and bunkers.
Lanzarote
Costa Teguise is located at the feet of an
old volcano, in the north-east of the island,
with extraordinary views of the sea.
Incorporating over 3,500 palm trees, it
was designed in 1978 by John Harris and
has a number of dog-legs while the ‘picon’
(volcanic sand) and the wind add an extra
ingredient. It has numerous dog-legs while
the fairways are lined by over 3,000 palms.
Lanzarote Golf Resort is situated
between Puerto del Carmen and Tias, and
is surrounded by volcanoes with the only
outlet the Atlantic Ocean.
The 18-hole course is over 6,700 yards
long and was designed by well-known
American architect Kirby among numerous
mature palms and other indigenous plants.
The original setting has been respected in
its design, with gentle slopes and old stone
walls. It has spectacular views of the ocean
and neighbouring Fuerteventura.
Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura Golf Club was the first 18-
hole course on the island and was the venue
for the Spain Open in 2004.
The course is located in a UNESCOprotected
reserve with a plethora of lakes,
palm trees and natural vegetation.
Bunkers add a man-made hazard and
there are gorgeous views of the Atlantic.
Situated just 8km from the island’s airport,
a full range of services are nearby including
the Elba Palace Golf, a five-star hotel.
Elsewhere, La Oliva, Salinas de Antigua
– with hillocks and dunes that provide
protection from the wind, desert-like areas
and four lakes – Las Playitas – in the
southern part of the island with an
entertaining, dynamic course with
magnificent views of the sea and wide
fairways – and Jandia are other alternatives.
La Palma and El Hierro do not have golf
courses but both are stunning settings for a
day trip during your golfing getaway. n
