GCSE Mathematics – Edexcel
In the event of a student not attaining a C grade in
Mathematics at GCSE Level it will be possible to retake this
exam in one year. The structure of the mathematics GCSE is
both linear and modular and there will be no coursework.
MEDIA STUDIES
AS Level Media Studies – AQA
This course emphasises the development of practical skills
that have vocational purpose, such as pre-production,
filming, editing and web-design, whilst providing you with
the critical vocabulary necessary to deconstruct media
artefacts in a more traditional academic fashion. You will
receive a comprehensive and integrated coverage of media
theory and practice with special emphasis on emerging
technologies; you will learn about audiences as both
producers and consumers of media texts. You will also have
opportunities to investigate personal media interests and
to follow a rolling programme of production briefs and preset
topics in order to prepare you for progression into work
or higher education in a range of media-related areas
Recently graduated students who have studied this
subject have been successful in gaining places on degree
courses such as Film and Television, Games Technology,
Film and Animation, Film and English and Media Studies
at universities such as Bournemouth, Sussex, Leeds and
Greenwich.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

AS Level Sport and Physical Education – AQA
An AS Level in Sport and Physical Education offers
opportunities for leading a healthy and active lifestyle. It
is also a well-respected subject with good prospects of
continuation into degree and employment-related subjects.
This subject includes the study of the physiological effects
of adopting a healthy lifestyle; the short term effect of
exercise/performance and the long term effects of training;
the analysis of movement across a range of sporting
actions as well as the acquisition of skills and the impact
of psychological factors on performance. The course also
allows for analysis and evaluation of physical activity as
performer and the execution of skills/techniques in two
roles in a chosen physical activity.
Recently graduated students who have studied this
subject have been successful in gaining places on degree
courses such as Sport Science, Sport Coaching and Sports
Psychology at universities such as Worcester, University of
East London, Herefordshire, Kent and London Metropolitan.
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport – Edexcel
(Development, Coaching and Fitness)
This is an ideal course for students who have successfully
completed the GCSE for PE and/or BTEC Level 2 in Sport.
This two year qualification will enable you to progress into
either employment or further study. The course provides
a sound, intellectually demanding vocational learning
experience. It will also provide you with opportunities to
develop your personal qualities of leadership, responsibility,
appearance, commitment and team work in a range of
practical and academic situations. You will study the current
issues of sport, as well as the main psychological, social
and physiological factors that affect the performance of a
practical skill.
In addition, you will also have the opportunity to gain NGB
coaching qualifications, CSLA and first aid qualifications.
This course is worth the equivalent of two A Levels. A work
placement experience will be integral.

PSYCHOLOGY
AS Level Psychology – AQA
Psychology is a varied and exciting subject which uses
many skills developed during your mainstream GCSE
education. You will need to have an interest in the human
mind and in addition to that, you will need a clear scientific
approach. You should be someone who enjoys writing
essays and reading text and you need sound analytical
skills. It will be assumed for the purpose of teaching
that most students undertaking the one year AS level
Psychology course will have no previous experience in the
subject. During the AS course, you will study Cognitive
Psychology; Developmental Psychology and Research
Methods; Biological Psychology, Social Psychology and
Individual Differences. You should research this subject in
more depth before making a decision about whether it is
right for you.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject

such as Psychology, Economics and Law at universities such
as Brunel, Coventry and Middlesex.
