INTRODUCTION TO KNIGHTS ACADEMY SIXTH FORM
We wish you a warm welcome to the Knights Academy
sixth form. We provide a high quality curriculum which puts
great emphasis on academic achievement. Our students
annually achieve results which are well above the national
average and which place us in the top 5% of the country for
‘value added’.
We encourage all of our students to progress to university
or further education. Our students have recently gained
Oxbridge places and a proportion go on to top Russell
Group universities. In addition to academic achievements,
there are opportunities for students to participate in
sporting, musical, cultural, community, work experience and
other activities.
Academic Attainment
We encourage all of our Year 11 students to progress to our
sixth form, knowing that we have the expertise and the
knowledge of our students’ abilities to bring out their very
best. We also welcome applications from external applicants.
We know that Post-16 education is the key to progressing
to further and higher education and gives our students the
confidence and skills to succeed in their futures, whatever
pathway they choose. We place great emphasis on individual
achievement, both inside and outside the classroom and
encourage students to take part in as many opportunities as
possible. We expect all students to work to the best of their
abilities.
Joining our sixth form means becoming part of a vibrant
academy, with all the advantages that offers, including
wide access to excellent educational resources and a great
opportunity to be part of very diverse school communities.
We aim to create a hard-working, friendly and caring
environment through the partnership of staff, students,
parents, governors and employers throughout the sixth form.
All students meet with their tutors on a daily basis in Study
Focus Time. They can expect to be carefully tracked by their
tutors and teachers to ensure that they are meeting their
grade expectations.
Our Elite Programmes in Business Studies and Science have
been designed to maximise opportunities for our most able
students wishing to enter into these fields and to help them
enter top universities. Other opportunities include links
with the Haberdashers’ through the Aske’s Lecture and the
Monmouth Enterprise, residential visits to top universities
such as Oxford and Cambridge, the Brilliant Club and a whole
range of top level sporting and music opportunities.
GENERAL INFORMATION
ACADEMIC MENTORING
All students meet with their tutors on a daily basis. You can expect
to be firmly guided towards good attendance and punctuality
records as well as receiving advice regarding homework, study
skills and extracurricular activities.
You will also receive regular intensive tutorials to discuss and
track your progress and to formulate programmes of study. This
tutorial will include an element of self-assessment and you will be
expected to reflect upon the grades you have achieved in recent
assignments. You will also be given advice on Higher Education
and provided with information and support on the process of
application.
BURSARY SCHEME
There is no longer an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
available to Post-16 students and there is no direct replacement
from the government. However, our sixth form does honour a
commitment to provide free school meals for all eligible sixth
formers. There is also a government bursary grant which is
available for our most vulnerable students.
CAREERS GUIDANCE, WORK
EXPERIENCE AND EMPLOYABILITY
We believe that good quality careers education will raise the
aspirations of all young people and help our students to become
effective career planners and managers of their own progression
through learning and work. It will increase motivation by linking
activities in school with preparation for life post 16 and post 18. In
providing unbiased IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) our
aim is to raise pupil achievement and increase confidence whilst
helping to ensure the equality of opportunity for all.
At Knights Academy sixth form we provide a comprehensive
CEIAG programme which includes aspects of work related learning,
enterprise education and financial capability. Future Pathway
Planning is a key part of a student’s time in Year 12 and Year 13
with students participating in various activities throughout the
year to ensure they can achieve their goals.
The Careers Education, Future Planning and Work Related Learning
Programmes assist students with self-development, careers
exploration and career management.
Throughout the Year, you will participate in the following:
• Higher Education advice sessions
• Student finance talks
• Pre-university / pre-employment talks
• Employability workshops
• Work experience
Most people spend many years of their life in a working environment
and it is therefore important to equip you with the necessary skills
to make decisions about your future, to know how and where to
access information and to link subject areas and qualifications with
possible careers. Our students are supported by their tutor, Sixth Form
Co-ordinator, UCAS Co-ordinator and the Academy’s Head of Careers
and HE Adviser.
DRESS CODE
A reminder to new Year 12 students that as one of our sixth
formers, you will be very much in the public eye, on work
placements, community activities, visits, events and entertaining
visitors to the Academy. We therefore expect you to exercise selfdiscipline
and take responsibility for what you wear.
Female students are required to wear:
• Plain, sleeved shirts and tops
• A business suit – full length trousers or knee length skirt
with matching jacket
• Footwear must be comfortable and business-like
(soft shoes are not permitted) with a small heel
Male students are required to wear:
• A plain business shirt
• A plain business suit
• Footwear must be comfortable and business-like
(soft shoes are not permitted)
• Federation sixth form tie (available from the
Reception Office)
Extrovert hairstyles make up and jewellery are unacceptable in
both male and female students. Facial studs are not permitted.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
There is an expectation that each sixth former will participate
in some form of enrichment activity. To obtain a broad and
balanced education you are strongly advised to take advantage
of the variety of opportunities on offer. All subject areas, in
addition to classroom-based pursuits, will make some of the
following available – field trips, work placements, visiting speakers,
conferences, workshops and other offsite events.
It is expected that members of the sixth form will take an active
part in the full life of the school. This means that you are expected
to help out in House activities and whole school activity days. You
are also expected to fulfil a leadership role with younger students
such as being a prefect or mentor. After normal school hours, or at
lunchtime, students can participate in music, drama, sport, dance
and other clubs. Students often initiate these themselves.
In addition, within the Extension Studies Programme, you will be
able to choose a range of options.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
All applications for Post 16 courses for our sixth form are treated
equally regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability and
cultural or class background. An offer of a place will be based on
whether we can provide you with a course suited to your specific
needs and whether you meet our admission criteria. A copy of our
Equal Opportunities Policy is available on our website.
LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE
Sixth form students have access to the Learning Resource Centre
(LRC). As well as up-to-date book stocks, the LRC provides
networked computer workstations and a place for quiet study.
There are many periodicals and magazines available in all subjects
along with several daily newspapers. We also have a collection of
CDs and DVDs, which may be borrowed for short periods or used
in the Learning Resource Centre itself. Knights Academy has a
well-stocked and up-to-date careers section and holds an extensive
range of information on Higher Education as well as all University
prospectuses. The Learning Resource Centre is open and staffed
throughout the day as well as before and after school. It is expected
that all students will make maximum use of these resources and
that they will respect the rights of other students to work in a quiet
and studious atmosphere.
INCLUSION
The Knights Academy inclusion team is available at all times to
advise and support any students who have additional educational
needs. We welcome applications from students with learning
needs or disabilities and will do our utmost to facilitate your
access to the Post 16 curriculum at our sixth form.
LEARNING SKILLS
When you take up education in Year 12, you are expected to
consider subjects in greater depth and you will be expected to work
independently. It is not only the content of subject matter that is
important in Years 12 and 13, but the way in which we learn.
At this level, you will be encouraged to think about and improve
skills in:
• Time management
• Note taking
• Essay and research construction
• Revision and examination technique
If you choose to continue your studies with us, you are
demonstrating that you would like to become a better student.
Awareness of learning methods will help you to achieve this aim.
In addition to the work completed during term time, Knights
Academy offers targeted learning sessions in Year 12 and an Easter
holiday revision programme for Years 12 and 13 to help you prepare
for final exams. If you are studying vocational qualifications, you will
also receive study support days prior to assignment deadlines.
EXTENSION STUDIES PROGRAMME
In order to ensure that all students have a broad and balanced
Post 16 course we run a flexible Extension Studies Programme.
You are offered the chance to extend your studies further and to
support your applications for Further Education or career paths.
The options available are likely to include the following:
AQA EXTENDED PROJECT
In the summer of Year 12, students will be given the opportunity to
enter themselves for this qualification which is worth up to 70 UCAS
points*. This qualification allows you to follow any area of interest
in consultation with your chosen supervisor and encourages
important university skills such as original research and project
management. You will be able to choose your area of study and
method of presentation in consultation with a supervisor. As well
as one to one guidance, you will also receive formal teaching in
research skills, presentation and other skills. You will make your final
presentation in Year 13. Your marks will be awarded by a panel of
teachers and moderated by the AQA examination board.
*Please note that not all universities choose to include this in their
offer, although many do. It is important to research this in advance
of applying through UCAS.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD SCHEME
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award aims to provide an enjoyable,
challenging and rewarding programme of personal development,
which is of the highest quality and the widest reach.
It has three progressive levels: Bronze (for those aged fourteen and
over), Silver (for those aged fifteen and over), Gold (for those aged
16 and over, who also hold a Silver Award).
Each award involves four sections (five for Gold):
• Service (volunteering for up to twenty four hours over a
three to six month period).
• Skill (participating in or learning a new skill for up to
twenty four hours over a three to six month period).
• Physical recreation (playing a sport is not necessary, you
just have to be active for up to twenty four hours over a
three to six month period).
• Expedition (living in the great outdoors, working as a
member of a group). The length of the expedition is
determined by which award you are working towards.
• Residential – (Gold Award students only) – a purposeful
enterprise for a minimum of four nights with people
not previously known to you. This could be undertaken
anywhere in the world.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is fast becoming the most popular
and most enjoyable enrichment activity open to students at Aske’s.
We currently have many students working at one of its three levels.
ELITE BUSINESS PROGRAMME
The Elite Business Programme is aimed at students who have a strong
career/university pathway in business/finance and economics. In
addition to their AS Level subject offer, the programme will allow
our most able students to gain access to an extra session once a
week in Year 12. This programme will offer opportunities to make
visits to universities, business schools and other business/financial
institutions; to receive master classes from a range of experts in these
fields; to be taught weekly outside of curriculum time on a wide
range of business-related subjects; to access early career advice on
work placements and voluntary activities and to be supported and
mentored by the Head of the Elite Business Programme.
ELITE SCIENCE PROGRAMME
The Elite Science Programme is aimed at students who have a
strong career/university pathway in the direction of medicine,
medical sciences and pure sciences. In addition to their AS Level
subject offer, the programme allows our most able students to
gain access to an extra session which takes place once a week.
This programme offers opportunities to make visits to universities
and medical schools; to receive master classes from a range
of experts in scientific fields; to be taught weekly outside of
curriculum time on a wide range of science-related subjects; to
access early career advice on work placements and voluntary
activities and to be supported and mentored by the Head of the
Elite Science Programme.
FOOTBALL PROGRAMME
This course gives students the opportunity to gain FA coaching
qualifications and improve their own playing performance over
two years. They would typically receive 200 minutes a day of elite
performance work such as practical development, match and play
analysis and fitness development. They will be expected to play
for the Academy football team representing Dulwich Hamlet FC
in the FA Youth Conference and want to develop their playing and
coaching performance to the highest standard. If selected for the
programme, students will compete in the FA Youth Conference
again on a Wednesday afternoon. Students will also have the
opportunities to gather other NGB coaching qualifications,
leadership qualifications and first aid awards.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students who opt into core PE are expected to commit themselves
throughout the year to a wide range of activities which include
both traditional team games and recreational activities. Interschool
fixtures take place in both rugby and cricket on Wednesday
afternoons alongside other activities such as badminton, weighttraining,
dance, soccer and in the summer, tennis. Activities are
arranged in four nine-week blocks. Also on offer is the Community
Sports Leaders Award (CSLA), which aims to improve their
confidence, leadership and organisational skills through leading
small groups of pupils both inside and outside of the Academy.
Candidates are assessed on a continuous basis throughout the
course to achieve a nationally recognised qualification which
can be the first step towards a future career in sports coaching,
the teaching of all subjects, or just to show a future employer or
university that they are able to lead and motivate others.
RUGBY PROGRAMME
The Rugby Programme is open to all students who have already
had experience in playing rugby, either at our school or as an
external student playing with their school or clubs. Students
interested in joining this programme will take part in trials at the
beginning of the year. The programme will allow them to train
weekly with a professional coach and to participate in regular
matches with other schools and colleges, as well as participating
in local and national competitions.
WORK EXPERIENCE/VOLUNTEERING
Many of our courses have compulsory work experience
components. However, there are some work experience
opportunities for all students. At the end of Year 12, all students are
required to participate in a week-long work experience in an area
that they are interested in. Advice and guidance will be available
from the Head of Careers and the sixth form team. However, they
are encouraged to be central in organising this work experience
themselves. In addition, Knights Academy offers students plenty of
opportunities to volunteer within their school communities.
SPONSORSHIP
Students at the Academy are extremely fortunate to have
substantial forms of sponsorship available to them. Details and
application forms are issued in Year 13, but a broad description of
the funds available to current students is presented here. These
awards are reviewed every year.
THE HAHC CENTENARY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is to commemorate the Centenary of the
founding of the Hatcham School in 1875. The purpose of this
award is to help a student to undertake a course at any place of
higher education on leaving school
ADVICE ON CHOICE OF COURSES/APPLICATION
Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy welcomes applications
from external candidates.
Students who attend the Knights Academy will be given first
refusal for the courses available. External candidates will then be
considered for any courses that have a vacancy. All applicants
internal and external will be considered under the same course
criteria.
The closing date for completed internal and external applications
is Monday, 17 December 2012.
Choosing your courses at sixth form can be very exciting and
a little daunting. You should consider your choices carefully,
including your long term education and career plans. You should
consider the entry grades needed for each subject and compare
this with your predicted grades. Talk to your careers teachers,
subject teachers, form tutors and your parents as well as other
people of your own age who may have experience in order to
get the best information possible. There is lots of information
available at our Open Evening and the Director of Sixth Form also
welcomes enquiries at any time.
When making your choices, you should follow this checklist
carefully with your tutor:
• Talk to your teachers, your tutor and parent/guardian
about your choices before deciding. Take your time,
it’s important that you make the right choice.
• Think about what you might want to do in the future.
Do some research to check that you have chosen the
right AS/BTEC subjects for what you want to do.
• Make sure you make realistic choices based on the grades
you are likely to achieve. Talk to your teachers and tutor
and listen to their advice. They are best-placed to know
whether you are likely to be successful in their subject at
a higher level.
• Have a ‘reserve’ subject in mind, just in case you have to
make a change.
• Fill out the choice boxes. There are four blocks: A, B, C and
D. Only pick one subject in each block.
• Most BTEC courses are the equivalent of two A Levels
and take up two subject blocks. This means that you only
have two other subjects blocks to choose from.
• If you want to apply for our Elite Business or Science
Programmes, remember to tick the boxes under the
subject blocks on the application form. This does
not mean that you gain automatic entry. You will be
interviewed later in the year for these programmes.
• Take your time when you write your personal statement
(on application form) and present it neatly – it’s very
important to make a good first impression! You can type a
statement and stick it to the application form if you prefer.
• Make sure that you have checked your form with your
tutor before you hand it in. This is very important since
it will speed up your application if the information
is accurate and if you have applied for courses wellmatched
to your abilities.
• It is a good idea to see the Careers Advisor as well as
applying to our sixth form, in order to find out what other
courses are available to you. Every student should consider
other options as well as applying to our sixth form. Your
tutor can help arrange an appointment with Careers for
you and will do so on request.
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To study at our Knights Academy sixth form, you will usually
need to gain a minimum of five A*-C grades. In addition to this,
you will usually need:
• For AS Level subjects, an A*-C grade at GCSE in the
subjects (or related subjects) that you wish to study.
Where a course is over-subscribed then places will
be allocated by taking in to consideration the grade
you have achieved in the subject (or related subjects)
you have studied at GCSE and your overall total GCSE
points score.
• For BTEC Level 3 subjects, A*-C grade at GCSE or the
equivalent at BTEC Level 2 in the subjects (or related
subjects) that you wish to study.
• Where you have not achieved at least a C grade
in English and/or mathematics then part of your
programme should be retakes in those subjects.
For further details on entry requirements, see details listed under
each subject in this ‘Course Description’ booklet. The subjects are
listed alphabetically.
We advise you to discuss these entry requirements with your
tutor and parents. We also recommend that you and your tutor
look at your most recent school report/periodic assessment to
match your current grades to the grades you will require for
sixth form study.
AS Level Economics – OCR
Economics covers issues as far-ranging as why roads in
the UK are increasingly congested and what can be done
about it or whether the economy benefits from the open
migration of people. It is a course for students who are
interested in these kinds of issues and who enjoy a good
debate on current political and economic affairs. Students
on this course will, therefore, benefit from reading good
quality newspapers and viewing relevant programmes on
television. To further stimulate your interest in the subject,
we will be arranging for you to attend conferences in the
UK or Europe to hear what well-known politicians think
about current economic and political issues.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject
have been successful in gaining places on degree courses
such as Economics, Accounting, Business and Business
Management at universities such as UCL, Loughborough
and Nottingham.
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Art and Design
(Textiles/Fashion) – Edexcel
This course allows you to explore the practical functions
of materials and demonstrate the manipulation of this
medium. Students are encouraged to show their creativity
with fashion visualisations as well as garment and accessory
construction. The course is a hands-on course and
prepares you to deal with the demands within the fashion
industry. By opting for this subject you may find yourself
considering a career in fashion design as a head designer,
design director, pattern grader, sketcher, or set and exhibit
designer who creates sets or exhibitions for fashion shows
or trade shows. If you want to focus on the current trends
by gathering data about the fashion markets to help
designers plan their collections, you may become a trends
researcher. This is an ideal course for students who love
to develop their own concepts and are motivated by the
world of art, design and fashion.
This is a new course and our first students to take up
this subject will graduate in the summer of 2013. We are
expecting that a number of these students will take up
courses at art colleges and universities to study fashion or
textiles-related degree courses.
DRAMA
(including Drama and
Theatre Studies)
AS Level Drama and Theatre Studies – Edexcel
If you successfully complete the course, you will have a
thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly
developed analytical and creative skills and an ability to
communicate effectively with others. The AS Drama and
Theatre Studies provides an opportunity to study plays
from the view of a director, designer, performer and critic.
The qualification is designed to enable you to acquire a
knowledge and understanding of the language of drama,
as well as developing your performing and analytical skills.
The course will complement other arts subjects, as well
as English and will improve vocal and presentation skills.
You will study the ‘Exploration of Drama and Theatre’ - the
study of two contrasting plays in a practical and active
way, analysing the way written plays can be interpreted
for performance. You will also study ‘Theatre Text in
Performance’ which offers you a chance to demonstrate
skills in a performance environment to an audience.
Recently graduated students who have studied this
subject have been successful in gaining places on degree
courses such as Drama and English at universities such as
ENGLISH
(including GCSE English Language)
AS Level English Literature – AQA
Studying English means studying literature in many forms.
This demands great commitment and a variety of skills,
not least of which is a genuine desire to read books of
all genres and periods, from Chaucer onwards. English
Literature includes studying novels, plays, poetry, nonfiction
and short stories. You will be able to make some
choices about your areas of study, especially in your
coursework modules, but you should also expect to study
texts outside of your current experience. You will learn to
use critical concepts and terminology with understanding
and discrimination. You will be encouraged to reflect on
your own responses to texts, considering other readers’
interpretations, with awareness of the contexts in which
texts were written. The AS course focuses on developing
students’ understanding of aspects of narrative in post
1990 novels and poetry from 1800-1945; dramatic genre
study will focus on the genre ‘drama’ and in the sense of
the sub-genre ‘tragedy’ with reference to one Shakespeare
and one independent choice play.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject
have been successful in gaining places on degree courses
such as English, PPE, Journalism and Law at universities
such as Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol.
GCSE Level English Language – AQA
In the event of a student not attaining a ‘C’ grade in English
Language at GCSE Level, it will be possible to retake this
exam in one year. Students will study a range of prose
fiction, poetry and non-fiction material. Pupils are expected
to be able to write in various styles, taking into account
the audience and ensuring appropriate language choice.
Pupils will be assessed on their ability to read forms of nonfiction
texts and analyse the effects of linguistic devices.
Students will also do a range of different speaking and
listening activities, including role-play, group and individual
presentations.
GEOGRAPHY
AS Level Geography – Edexcel
This new four-unit specification allows a balance between
your own particular physical, human and/or environmental
interests and key geographical topics. It will provide
students with the knowledge, understanding and skills
for further study at higher education or for employment.
Emphasis is on contemporary issues, fieldwork and
research. Within the physical section, ‘World at Risk’ you
will look at a range of natural hazards and within the
human section you will study the nature and effects of
globalisation. Geographical investigations allow you to look
in detail at the topics of re-branding places and crowded
coasts. You will design and undertake fieldwork in both
topics and will be expected to attend a residential fieldtrip.
The course also includes compulsory residential fieldwork.
HISTORY
AS Level History – OCR
History is a well-respected and influential academic course,
valuable, not only as a qualification, but as part of a wider
education. A sense of the past is essential if you are to
understand the future. This course will provide you with
lots of transferable skills that employers and universities
value. For example, you will learn to use information
effectively, weigh up conflicting evidence before making
important decisions and learn to be analytical and critical
when considering information presented to you. History
will allow you to debate - expressing a clear personal point
of view (an invaluable skill at interview) and to understand
how and why humans have behaved as they have – and
to learn from their mistakes. In this rapidly changing world
employers want people who are independent thinkers,
open-minded, disciplined and good at problem solving.
Minimum requirements - GCSE’s grade A*– C.
Film Studies – AS Level Film Studies
Film Studies is designed to deepen students’ understanding,
appreciation and enjoyment of film, the major art form
of the twentieth century and a cultural form still of great
significance at the beginning of the new millennium.
Students will study cinema as a medium, art form and as
a social and economic institution. Students engage with
a wide range of different kinds of films, developing skills
of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection, in
particular exploring the relationship between the film ‘text’
and the individual by focusing on the exploration of meaning
and response. The study of film institutions and audiences
amplifies the central focus on meaning and response by
exploring issues of production and consumption, supply and
demand. Some of the recurring debates within film culture
such as regulation, national identity and cultural hegemony
will also be explored.
This is a new course. We expect that this course will
complement students who wish to pursue arts and mediarelated
degrees at university.
Entry requirements:
GCSE A*– B in English (Literature or Language) in
addition to general entry requirements (see P. 4 of
MATHEMATICS
(including Mathematics AS Level
and Maths GCSE)
AS Level Mathematics
Mathematics is a fascinating subject and for many people
this is sufficient reason to study it. Others are motivated by
its key role in the development of science. It is fundamental
to the study of engineering, and is increasingly used in
medicine. Perhaps less well known is its role in the social
sciences and economics. Mathematics develops many
vital skills, including clear logical thinking. You will receive
training in problem solving, together with the range of
applications of the subject and this means that there are
well paid and prestigious career opportunities for students
of Mathematics. You will be studying a mix of statistics
and mechanics. This is a general mathematics option that
complements all courses.
Mathematics at AS level is substantially more challenging
than at GCSE. Students who have not achieved a grade B or
higher at GCSE are unlikely to be successful on this course.
A sound understanding of Algebra is also vital and students
will be tested in early September.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject
have been successful in gaining places on degree courses
such as Maths, Accounting and Mechanical Engineering at
universities such as the LSE, UCL, and Bristol.
SCIENCES
(including Biology, Chemistry
and Physics)
AS Level Biology – OCR
Biology is a very popular subject and many students
choose it. The specification is divided into biological topics,
each containing different key concepts of biology. Once
the key features of a biological topic have been developed,
you will go on to consider the applications. For assessment
purposes, knowledge and understanding of key concepts
are treated separately at AS; important links between
different areas of Biology are largely assessed synoptically
at A2. There is a choice of assessed practical tasks available
to all students. While the teaching of practical skills may
be integrated with the theoretical topics, you are assessed
separately and include the study of cells, exchange and
transport as well as molecules, biodiversity, food and health.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject
have been successful in gaining places on degree courses
such as Biology, Bio veterinary Sciences, Dentistry and
Medicine at universities such as Glasgow, Exeter
and Sheffield.
AS Level Chemistry – OCR
We are keen to encourage you to develop your interest in,
and enthusiasm for Chemistry. This includes developing
your interest in further study and careers in Chemistry
and learning to appreciate both how society makes
decisions about scientific issues as well as how the sciences
contribute to the success of the economy and society.
Studying Chemistry will also enable you to develop and
demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge
and understanding of how science works and to develop
essential knowledge and understanding of different areas
of chemistry and how they relate to each other.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject
have been successful in gaining places on degree courses
such as Chemistry, Biomedical and Forensic Sciences,
Dentistry and Medicine at universities such as Kent,
Sheffield and Staffordshire.
Students are expected to wear lab coats for all practical
sessions which can be purchased from the Chemistry
Department.
architecture and all forms of manufacturing, have vacancies
for candidates with Physics qualifications. In the light of
this, a good working knowledge of Physics principles is
important to better relate to and understand this rapidly
developing technology. Physics graduates earn more
money in their lifetime on average than graduates in
most other subjects and it is a challenging and thought
provoking subject. If you choose to study Physics, you will
be studying mechanics, electrons and waves as well as
developing your practical skills.
Recently graduated students who have studied this subject
have been successful in gaining places on degree courses
such as Physics, Aeronautics and Civil Engineering at
universities such as Imperial, Bristol and Southampton.
Please note: Students who study this subject are advised to
study Mathematics as well.
SOCIOLOGY
AS Level Sociology – AQA
Sociology can best be understood as the study of society.
Society itself has a huge influence on what we do, how we
think and who we are. Sociology is the study of people, by
people – how people form cultures, societies, organisations,
laws, beliefs, families, religions and many other aspects
of human life. To study Sociology you should be keen to
develop an awareness of contemporary social and political
issues. In A level Sociology we study lots of different
aspects of society including culture, identity, the process of
socialisation (how we learn to understand the world around
us and our role within it) and social differentiation (how
gender, ethnicity, age and social class play a part in society).
Sociology is not simply thinking about the world and giving
your own opinions, it uses theoretical models developed by
great thinkers such as Marx, Weber, Comte and Durkheim
to explore society. It also involves examining contemporary
sociological research to explore why society is the way that
it is. Sociology is a tool that allows you to explore the world
around you in a structured and academic way.
Recently graduated students who have studied this
subject have been successful in gaining places on degree
courses such as Sociology, Psychology and Philosophy at
universities such as Nottingham and Manchester.
AS Level Physics – OCR
Physics principles underpin much of modern technology.
If there were no Physicists and Technologists with a good
knowledge of Physics, then most of the machines that
we accept as part of normal life today would not exist. As
a result, industries of national importance for the future,
such as renewable energy, communications, electronics,
