RUGBY PROGRAMME The Rugby Programme is open to all students who have already had experience in playing rugby, either at our school or as an external student playing with their school or clubs. Students interested in joining this programme will take part in trials at the beginning of the year. The programme will allow them to train weekly with a professional coach and to participate in regular matches with other schools and colleges, as well as participating in local and national competitions. WORK EXPERIENCE/VOLUNTEERING Many of our courses have compulsory work experience components. However, there are some work experience opportunities for all students. At the end of Year 12, all students are required to participate in a week-long work experience in an area that they are interested in. Advice and guidance will be available from the Head of Careers and the sixth form team. However, they are encouraged to be central in organising this work experience themselves. In addition, Knights Academy offers students plenty of opportunities to volunteer within their school communities. SPONSORSHIP Students at the Academy are extremely fortunate to have substantial forms of sponsorship available to them. Details and application forms are issued in Year 13, but a broad description of the funds available to current students is presented here. These awards are reviewed every year. THE HAHC CENTENARY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is to commemorate the Centenary of the founding of the Hatcham School in 1875. The purpose of this award is to help a student to undertake a course at any place of higher education on leaving school THE HABERDASHERS’ BOOK AWARD This has been generously donated by the Haberdashers’ Company to students gaining a place at University after sixth form education. The award is valued at up to £100 and is supplied to help students with the considerable cost of buying books and other educational material at the start of their degree course. (It is anticipated that up to fifteen qualifying students will receive this award). THE COCHRANE SCHOLARSHIPS This is an especially generous form of sponsorship available to Aske’s students entering university to read specifically Scientific, Mathematical and Engineering Degree courses. Reginald Cochrane was a pupil at Aske’s until 1915 and has bequeathed this award to encourage academic excellence. The value of the award is £1,000 per year for the duration of the course. HABERDASHERS’ UNIVERSITY ARTS BURSARIES These awards were introduced in March 2007 to encourage academic excellence in the Arts and Humanities. The value of the award is £1,000 per year for the duration of the course. In addition there are other scholarships available from the Haberdashers’ Company to assist with the funding of gap year projects, various musical and art/design related activities, medical electives and outstanding contributions to the academic and extracurricular activities of the Academy. ADVICE ON CHOICE OF COURSES/APPLICATION Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy welcomes applications from external candidates. Students who attend the Knights Academy will be given first refusal for the courses available. External candidates will then be considered for any courses that have a vacancy. All applicants internal and external will be considered under the same course criteria. The closing date for completed internal and external applications is Monday, 17 December 2012. Choosing your courses at sixth form can be very exciting and a little daunting. You should consider your choices carefully, including your long term education and career plans. You should consider the entry grades needed for each subject and compare this with your predicted grades. Talk to your careers teachers, subject teachers, form tutors and your parents as well as other people of your own age who may have experience in order to get the best information possible. There is lots of information available at our Open Evening and the Director of Sixth Form also welcomes enquiries at any time. When making your choices, you should follow this checklist carefully with your tutor: • Talk to your teachers, your tutor and parent/guardian about your choices before deciding. Take your time, it’s important that you make the right choice. • Think about what you might want to do in the future. Do some research to check that you have chosen the right AS/BTEC subjects for what you want to do. • Make sure you make realistic choices based on the grades you are likely to achieve. Talk to your teachers and tutor and listen to their advice. They are best-placed to know whether you are likely to be successful in their subject at a higher level. • Have a ‘reserve’ subject in mind, just in case you have to make a change. • Fill out the choice boxes. There are four blocks: A, B, C and D. Only pick one subject in each block. • Most BTEC courses are the equivalent of two A Levels and take up two subject blocks. This means that you only have two other subjects blocks to choose from. • If you want to apply for our Elite Business or Science Programmes, remember to tick the boxes under the subject blocks on the application form. This does not mean that you gain automatic entry. You will be interviewed later in the year for these programmes. • Take your time when you write your personal statement (on application form) and present it neatly – it’s very important to make a good first impression! You can type a statement and stick it to the application form if you prefer. • Make sure that you have checked your form with your tutor before you hand it in. This is very important since it will speed up your application if the information is accurate and if you have applied for courses wellmatched to your abilities. • It is a good idea to see the Careers Advisor as well as applying to our sixth form, in order to find out what other courses are available to you. Every student should consider other options as well as applying to our sixth form. Your tutor can help arrange an appointment with Careers for you and will do so on request. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To study at our Knights Academy sixth form, you will usually need to gain a minimum of five A*-C grades. In addition to this, you will usually need: • For AS Level subjects, an A*-C grade at GCSE in the subjects (or related subjects) that you wish to study. Where a course is over-subscribed then places will be allocated by taking in to consideration the grade you have achieved in the subject (or related subjects) you have studied at GCSE and your overall total GCSE points score. • For BTEC Level 3 subjects, A*-C grade at GCSE or the equivalent at BTEC Level 2 in the subjects (or related subjects) that you wish to study. • Where you have not achieved at least a C grade in English and/or mathematics then part of your programme should be retakes in those subjects. For further details on entry requirements, see details listed under each subject in this ‘Course Description’ booklet. The subjects are listed alphabetically. We advise you to discuss these entry requirements with your tutor and parents.
